I'm willing to bet that it's supposed to be civil war era, hollow base, huge cal. If they were sending thousands in both directions probably possible.

that is pretty awesome! and do-able.
now I would believe it is real, but there is always the chance someone just put them together and threw them in the dirt. maybe even a guy got hit a few times from front and back or both sides or something.

The MythBusters first tried to mount two Civil War rifles in front of each other so that when fired, the bullets would collide in midair. However, this proved impossible because they were unable to get the guns to fire at the same time. Instead, they aimed a single rifle at a bullet suspended in the air. The fired bullet hit dead center, and the MythBusters found that both bullets had fused together into a single mass. Though incredibly unlikely, it is possible for two bullets to collide and fuse together in midair.

now that I really take a close look at it, I truly believe it is fake. The bullets have the "lips" on the side and some hang over the other, but there are a couple pieces that are in the opposite direction which makes me thing they just found two bullets and stuck them together in a way that looks like they collided.
also look at the spot where they mate. The two bullets don't look like they flattened out together, more they look like they were flattened by a hard surface and then placed together.

I am sure it is possible, especially with the amount of bullets fired and the sheer number of soldiers standing in a line shooting at another line of soldiers. bullets were sure to at least have a good chance of meeting one another. then finding the bullet would be a whole other story.

But, if the white sox pitcher can throw a perfect game, I guess some bullets meeting in mid air is possible as well.

Possible? Yes. Real? Sure, why not. I have seen bullets fused together at the berms in shooting ranges. Not worth faking really.

I'm no expert in Civil War firearms/ammo or anything, but the basic appearance and the rings sure look a lot like the "mini ball" (that's what he calls it) that my dad found on his property that definitely IS Civil War era.

Fake or not I don't know, but I grew up near Gettysburg and people have found bullets that collided in mid air. So yes it is possible. Like already stated soldiers stood in line and fired volleys at each other.
