After reading that the law finally caught the second NY fugitive only 1.5 miles from the border I began to wonder... What would keep someone from walking across the border into Canada at an unofficial border crossing?

It is pretty easy. In High School, we took summer canoe trips into the boundary waters of Canada/Minnesota. We were crossing into Canada daily.

Out of four years we saw a mountie once doing "spot checks".

Nothing. Same experience as rbeau on the northern Maine border with Canada. River boundary.

Got lost in a boat once in the Puget sound. We were half way to Vancouver island when we figured it out. The Canadian border is less fenced and guarded than the Mexican boarder

Don't you know no one would cross the border unofficially? Why, that would be like criminals ignoring the background check laws when procuring their weapons!

Reminds me of a funny but true story. When I was a child my mom got our van searched by border patrol coming back from Canada. They were asking the usual questions. Why were you visiting Canada, do you have any fruits or vegetables, etc. When he asked how many of us there were she told him eight. There were only seven of us. Needless to say we had to pull over and get out of the van so they could search for that eighth person.

A desire not to go to Canada and a knowledge of where the line was.

Nothing. I used to live in QC and would hike in the Adirondack all the time. It is a pretty rugged area, and you will cross the border many times on some trails. BUT on the other side of the border from NY to Quebec, you end up in the Kanawake reservation, and this is NOT a place you will want to be walking alone... The locals are not friendly and if you happen to stumble on one of their smuggling operation you will not be seen again.... Even the RCMP will not enter the reservation.

If I was to cross illegaly I would choose vermont instead. Lots of dirt roads cross the border. Some farms in QC have the end of their property lines in VT....

REALLY easy. I watch the Maine Game Warden show on Animal Planet and there is a stretch of forest they watch yearly during moose season because people go kill one in Canada and drag it across the border for their Maine tag.

I grew up in Michigan and even with very limited "land border" we still found our way into Canada quite frequently. Crossing near Detroit was easier than crossing the border into CA is these days. [Dunno]

We used to cross the actual border all the time while boating the straights of Mackinac.

Back in the day we'd hop over the ambassador bridge to visit the Canadian ballet. Back then all you needed was a drver's license, now they want to see a passport (at least the last time I crossed).

I think you can't even get into Canada if you have a DUI. Is that true?

I grew up in Minnesota, crossed the border many times. The northern border is marked by a boundary about 20 yds wide (with posts every so many feet/yds) where the trees are cut down kind of like a set of power lines through the woods. Nothing to stop you from crossing wherever you wanted.

Minnesota / Canada border..

Who would want to go up there anyways? Lots of Loonies and Toonies if you ask me.

Can't imagine why we would want to invade in the war of 1812.
