View Full Version : Mixing ammo to save some $ shooting groups: Would this idea work?

While loading my magazines with the very expensive 6.5 Grendel A-Max match rounds, I thought of a method that maybe a good way to conserve the expensive match ammo while shooting groups. To illustrate I will describe how to employ the method for shooting 3 shot groups. The method is simple. The first shot fired is typical cheap range ammo, in my case wolf gold. The two subsequent shots fired are match ammo. The logic being that after I take my first shot, I will be aiming at that bullets point of impact for the following two shots in the group. So if shot one (cheap ammo) is off my 1 moa, due to the ammo being low quality, my group wont be affected much because the second two shots are more important as their accuracy will determine the size of the group.

The only variable that I think would really mess up this method is if the scope is zeroed with the cheap ammo, or if the weight of the bullets varies dramatically, i.e. first shot is 55grain, second two are 77 grain rounds.

Of course this is just for recreational shooting. I would not do this in a competition or more serious situation. But for a day at the range, shooting 3 shot groups this method will use about %33 less match ammo.

This is just a theory. I have not tried it. I would like to hear what folks think of this method.

Why not reload, roll your own range rounds and save the "match ammo" for serious work ? You don't reload [panic]there's no time like yesterday to get involved. The money you invest today, will pay off after a few trips to the range. Not to mention buying in bulk, then you're hooked.

Just pick a flavor of ammo and shoot groups with it. Changing flavors of ammo is not a good way to shoot good groups.

And like Jim said. Start reloading.

You'll be essentially be shooting two round groups with a varying aim point. It doesn't sound like a great plan to me.

Maybe try this instead. Work on your position to try to get your groups as small as possible with the cheap ammo. Then, take what you learned and try it with the good stuff.

Why not shoot a 3 round group at the same point on the target vs this whole aim at bullet impact thing?

Burn a "cheap" round for your first cold bore shot if your rifle changes poi alot when cold.

Poor idea IMO. There's little likelihood the crappy Wolf and the good stuff will perform even remotely similar.

It's just a two round group if you're writing off the first round as a flyer each time.

I think you have too much free time to think about weird stuff like this.

I say use that free time to load your own rounds or maybe pick up a second job to buy more good factory ammo.

Yup....

It's just a two round group if you're writing off the first round as a flyer each time.

Others have said it...don't change your point of aim. That makes no sense at all.
