Trading stopped in NY b/c TPTB don't want the paper markets to go down too much in one day.

This is all about controlling the outcomes and making sure the stupid, ignorant public remains ignorant of all the bullshit going with these markets.

They are building the case for more QE, because they're so smart they backed themselves into a corner where QE or HUGE markets losses are the only options.

WSJ website was down for an hour too.

But they're reporting the NYSE halt was due to internal technical issues, not a breach or cyber attack.

The "they" I'm talking about are the FedRes/FedGov/Wall Street wizards who think that just because they all went to Harvard Business School means they are infallible.

QE and market controls are the hallmark of socialism/facism/communism and the "command economy".

These people need to let the free market be free and run based on value of products and services instead of picking and choosing who the winners will be.

Keep in mind the Chinese stock market is in free fall as well...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/07/08/china-stock-market_n_7752190.html

Sorry to use the Puff Host as a source, but they were the first one to come up...

BEIJING (AP) — China announced a flurry of new moves Wednesday to halt a stock market slide. The result? Another big dive in share prices. The government told state companies and executives to buy shares, raised the amount of equities insurance companies can hold and promised more credit to finance trading.
Hundreds of companies have halted trading in their stock after emergency measures announced last weekend failed to stop a rout that has dragged down the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index by more than 30 percent since early June.

The Shanghai index lost another 5.9 percent on Wednesday despite the new measures and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index closed down 5.8 percent after diving as much as 8.5 percent earlier in the day.

NYSE has spent billions making sure a day like this would never happen. And it's just a coincidence that happens with the Chinese market and Greece?

It's an economy of perceptions--free market died with too big to fail.

A friend sent me this article earlier today:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-07-08/china-bans-stock-sales-by-major-shareholders-for-six-months
I replied stating that my favorite line from the article is:

“This is not something that would happen in the U.S. or in any other developed market,” said Brian Jacobsen, who helps oversee $250 billion as the chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management.
Now, the article has been "updated," and no longer contains this quote.

I was mentioning to co-workers, over lunch, that there is too much happening all at once to believe the official explanation. I literally was told to "stop reading Fox news" and that I was paranoid. I honestly can't even come close to an explanation of the actual happenings. Seriously though it's naive to think all this is just a "glitch". I've been developing software for over 15 years and know for sure that when the high up types say something this big is a "glitch" that it's a complete lie. With the amount of money on the line it should be widely known and accepted that there is a deeper explanation that is being held back.

I don't know why, but I clicked on that link. The "article" opened up with

We’ve all seen crop circles and heard various theories about them: they are naturally occurring, they are the work of pranksters and, most believably, they are the work of aliens from another planet marking out landing coordinates for the inevitable invasion and colonisation of our world.
Really? Out of the theories listed for the origins of crop circles, THAT is the most believable? It's folks like this that let me know that my tin-foil hat isn't too tight after all. These people are nuts!

That site is more of a light show than anything. There are Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on the US on a continual basis. Much of the traffic originates in China.

I've found this site a bit more useful than Norse; http://www.digitalattackmap.com/

I see multiple simultaneous glitches becoming more common. As companies move infrastructure to "the cloud", all it takes is for a cloud provider to have a glitch and multiple users are impacted.

I would never disagree... She is right about what happens when they run out of options.

But I think a more likely scenario yesterday was strategic purging of open orders. The exchanges see those tickets in real time so they know where the market is going before the trades are "priced in." This was four hours. It was more about getting certain bids out of the system, IMHO.

It's all about perceptions and there seems to be a good public/private partnership willing to do what it takes. A four hour "glitch" is easier to stomach than a trading halt or another flash crash. Remember 2008 (Lehman Bros)? I was in NYC during that and it started the snowball. Imagine the power to make a couple of trading days in 2008 go away?

Compare to China... ~40% of symbols are restricted (long term). That is a shutdown and there's no way to dress that up.
