View Full Version : What to look for on a used Toyota tundra
First...this isn't for me! My brother in law has been knocked out many times fighting mma so he naturally wants a Toyota. [Abused][Abused]I don't have any experience and am curious what to look for to help him out.
here the is truck he likes

I like having seats in mine...and cup holders. Chicks dig that stuff.
I thought this was another joke thread!

Yeah, I was getting ready to run with it myself. Trying to avoid working today. Does it show?

How many owners? Former Rental fleet or private purchase? Any documentation. I know with less than 50-60K IF i was selling it. There would be paperwork for any repairs & maintenance done.
I have an '04. Good truck.
There was a recall on brakes for mine. I don't know if it included that year, too, but it wouldn't hurt to check the recall history and make sure everything has been done. Mine seems to thrive on mild neglect. It eats tires, but that's my only complaint.

Does she have a sister?!

I would tell him to check out the reviews for Georgis Auto Sales.

If it comes with a mini-14, it's probably good to go.

Bwahahahahahaha![LOL]
Kinda funny truck bloat, that tundra is smaller than some new er tacomas
Well we stopped by, did read the reviews on the place and I instantly had a bad feeling pulling up to the place but he wanted to look anyways. Blue one was a salvage title as were what looked like almost every other truck there. We look at a black one with high miles but it came from Canada then spent life in Michigan and I believe it was part of a flood claim because there was rust coming through painted nuts and bolts on the top of the inside of the engine compartment.
i got under it and holly rust bucket.
so screw that place!

I lived in Canada and will NEVER buy a used car coming from there....
Why is that? Salt or just harsh weather or?

I'm a native Michigander, they use a lot of salt on the roads there in the winter time.

The blue one is nice looking with low miles for an 06. However, for what he is asking I'd save up for a while longer and get into something a little newer with a factory warranty from a reputable dealer. That is just me though.

A lot of people (me included) prefer the early Tundras thru 06 to the newer ones. If that Truck was a clean, one owner with maintenance records it would be a great deal. I bought an '05 a couple of years ago with 37K miles on it that looked like new. Best truck I have ever owned, by far.

Make sure you have documentation on the timing belt has been changed, esspecially if it is over the factory recommended mileage interval.
I know a guy who's belt snapped 500 miles over that interval. Completely trashed the motor. It cost more to rebuild than the truck was worth.
So he ended up junking the truck.
Also you cannot get full coverage on a salvaged title, so a loan is not possible.

Great info Bob, thank you. I wasn't sure if these had a belt or not. Any idea what the mileage is to change out the belt? Is it like my civic where the water pump should be changed at the same time? So I assume if the belt snapping trashing the motor this is an interference engine? he already trashed a Subaru not changing the belt so I imagine he learned his lesson from that.
didnt know that about the salvage title and full coverage, and he will need to get a loan so that is an automatic no-go.

Liability ONLY. No Loan. That's the standard in CO and perhaps across the country. The first warning sign was not showing a carfax report. However, when it comes to carfax reports. If a dealer or other service dept, doesn't report the work (maintenance ) or repairs like accident, blown trans or engine, it never shows up.
A lot of the generic used car lots are selling auction or salvage vehicles. We found what looked like a cream puff tacoma 09 with 86K. Looking at the history it was a rental purchase going through a total of 3 lots. Who knows how many drivers it had.
FWIW, American Family can do full coverage on a salvage title. They pay out on the salvage value so you get reduced benefit but not reduced insurance cost. I had a client we had to send down to them because of a salvage vehicle and they recently paid a claim on it too so I know they can do it.
90K on the timing belt as I just did mine along with a new water pump and serpentine belt. These are great trucks as mine has been bulletproof and you can have a party in the back seat.
There are a LOT of outfits moving flood vehicles to no flood states to sell them as if they were here all the time in "no humidity" land. Heck, they don't even have to to do that these days, after the floods we had around here lately!
Also, I know some insurance companies (dont know if all of them) aren't allowing people to retain totaled vehicles from flood damage. For the very reason that too many are reappearing as "clean" cars.

Look for one parked next to a nice, used Chevy. Then buy the Chevy.

Ha! That's what I told him! I did take him to my guy at Len Lyall afterwards and he drove a new 1/2 ton. Obviously loved it but price/payment is the sticking point right now.
Probably needs to realize without a pretty hefty good job, trucks anymore are pretty bullshit priced. Even pretty basic "workers" tiny cab + long bed and ho hum engine. The new SUV status symbol. (LoL at any most new trucks moderatly blinged reaching decent BMW prices)
I agree it is amazing what the price of a new vehicle is, looked at the sticker on a nicely equipped suburban and it was $71k.
but comparing a bmw to a truck is a LOL moment, I'd like to see any bmw haul what my duramax can. And my duramax isn't going to win any high speed cornering contests either, but functionality wise I need a truck on a weekly basis
he "wants" a truck, their suv does everything they need and a cargo carrier hooked in their hitch would do just fine, but I am getting him more into hunting and he is really getting into fishing so I imagine an atv could be in his future as well so a truck would suit him well. It's just the typical dilemma of wanting a nicer newer low mileage vehicle for cheap and those don't go hand in hand.
