View Full Version : Xtreme 9mm 124 gr OAL and powder question

We've briefly touched on the topic before that FP 9mm bullets need a much shorter OAL than a regular RN. I'm currently loading mine at ~1.07 to pass the plunk test in my CZ75B (my only 9mm). I've looked around online and that seems to be about what others are finding.
My concern is that I'm loading with AA#7 starting at 6.6gr to 8.2gr. I've only loaded 6.6, 6.9, 7.1, 7.3, and 7.5. While I'm not pressing the bullet into the powder, I'm pretty close, and it's making me quite nervous. Everything I've come across online people are using TightGroup (3-4.5 gr), Unique (5.0 gr), Sillohette (4-4.9 gr) and others with similar powder weights. I've not shot anything yet to see how things are, but I'm growing reluctant. Does anyone have any first hand experience with a similar loading combination? I believe AA#7 isn't as hot as TightGroup, but the left over case capacity is alarming to a new reloader. Any help will be appreciated.

What do your manuals say?

FPNI.

Save the #7 for you Fortay and use that TG you have. 4.0 gr TG works wonders. 3.8 the slide might be a tad sluggish.

I'm using Titegroup now with 147gr RN. Would love to try VV N320.

I'll pay more when I get home, but I've seen a range from 6.2-6.9 or 6.9-8.2. I don't think any source I've looked at has had such a short OAL though.

Do you guys find that the fast burn rate of Titegroup trends to be peaky, or build pressure too quickly? That seemed to be a popular concern I read about.

I'm loading xtreme 124gr fp at 1.100 OAL, using either 5.2gr of CFE Pistol, or 4.0gr of Titegroup.

Thank you! Sounds like I should work up loads for both at the same time.

Any comments on whether it is safe to try the loads I currently have worked up?

the load data from Accurate shows several 124gr loads for AA7... but for any with a OAL at 1.100 or under, the max is 7.5gr. For 124gr loads at 1.060, they have 7.3 and 6.9 as the max.

Thank you. Exactly what I'm looking for.

Sounds like I stopped at the right point.

That's perfect. Thank you so much. I think I'm going to look into trying some Silhouette now as well.

Xrteme recommends using Speer Load data when using their product. I start at powder mfg data and go from there.

Another good tip. What a lovely community we have here.

I'll be loading up some 147 Xtreme RN over VV real soon for my SP-01. I found two cans, and at 3.4ish, that's 4k rounds. Powder Valley had some 4 lb cans today, but I don't need that much.

AA#7 is a bit slow for 9mm. TG, AA#5, AA#2, Solo1000 and others that are a little faster work better for 9mm, and especially for plated bullets.

I'd tell you what I use, but there is no published data for it and that makes some people nervous, but it is a fast shotgun powder near N310 or AA#2 in terms of burn rate. I shoot the 124HP almost exclusively and they are great.

If you are looking for +P loads, then you should use a little slower powder, but for 124s between 1000 and 1100 fps, fast powders are the ticket.

Do you have a discount code for XTreme?

Thanks

Use MarkCO or Hoser. Those names open doors.

Unfortunately not the right ones. [Beer]

How do you feel about Silhouette or True Blue?

Anyone who lives in Windsor interested in trading an unopened pound of Titegroup for Silhouette or True Blue?

Have not tried True Blue, but it looks good.

Use "MAP2015XB" for 5% off any Xtreme order.

Looks like 3.9 of Titegroup is what is working for me. Thanks for all the help guys.
