I had an early model Gen 4 G29. The finish was a little glossy, smooth and kind of slick. I just picked up a Gen 4 G19 and it seems the finish is more matte and not as smooth/slick. Did Glock change their finish?

Sort of. Slides that are finished here in the states have a different finish. The process they use overseas doesn't meet EPA requirements here. Or something like that. At least that's the way I understand it. I could be mistaken.

Is the Amerika finish better? Worse? The same?

Glock switched from a salt bath nitrocarburization, dubbed "Tenifer", to a gaseous process that I understand to be the worldwide process now (more consistent).

You don't see the Tenifer. What you do see is the finish coat, which has ranged from parkerizing to a Gunkote-like product (I've heard actual gunkote..) to a black oxide, back to the current parkerized coating.

Personally, I like the older finish. It seems more durable and less prone to scratches.

I like the Orange peel/frying pan finish better. The new feels like krylon.

I've read several different theories, with no clue what to believe. I've owned many Glock's (see title under my user name lol), and the old finish is much more resilient, in fact I've never been able to scratch the old finish, can't say the same about the newer finishes. Here are a few pics comparing my 05 production G19 to my G43, not sure if you can tell a difference or not.

Scratch on my newish G43, carried a bit, fired a bit.

Tenifer (older finish) is much more durable and corrosion resistant.
