Upgrade went automatically and reasonably smoothly.
Now get to play "Where did they put everything" for the next few weeks.

I have it "reserved", not real fond of the Windows 8 my new laptop is running , probably because most of the computers I use are still running much older programs.

I am interested i can also upgrade for free but my concerns are "drivers" I have always had problems finding new drivers, specially for laptops.

I actually heard from a tech geek the systems with Windows 7 run faster with Windows 10. Interested if that is the real life case.

I plan on installing 10 on my PC at home as soon as my update is available ... but at work I'm going to wait a while.

If you don't rely on the laptop for work it might be worth a try. It seems like the early reviewers are very impressed with how smoothly their laptops transitioned over. They also included an easy way to revert back to your previous version of windows if it's not working out.

I've only upgraded my Surface (from 8.1) so far. After all the tedium of changing security settings and personalization like with every fresh OS install it's going fine. I had to chase down an issue with something draining the battery at a rapid rate but it wasn't that hard.

So far it's a lot better than 8 but I haven't seen a good reason to update my Windows 7 desktop. Your experience may vary.

The most positive thing so far is that my wife, who is not technical, has not gone nuts. I am sure the sub-surface changes are substantial, but for the most part, it's close enough to the Windows 7 interface that the casual user will be just fine. I haven't plugged everything in yet, but so far all of the drives, printers, cameras, and graphics tablets I have seem to be working well enough. My desktop is nearly 10 years old and has several older programs and applications on it. All the ones I have clicked so far seem to launch and function fine.

Curiously enough, I have not received the upgrade for my Transformer tablet as of yet, which actually runs on 8.1. Will be curious to see how Win10 translates to the tablet.

Make sure you turn off all the Cortina stuff aka we will listen and record everything you do and send it off to the cloud so we can analyze it.

It's under Advanced options during the install. Everything is on by default and you need to turn it all off.

The audio is not an issue for me personally, because my old assed desktop does not have a mic, either internal or external.

Supposedly edge runs way fast. If I do it may be good upgrade from the whore chrome has become. Unsure about upgrading though as my system is getting a tad antique and I'm a gamer and there are some driver issues this fresh into release. Some aesthetic issues too, I wish the 7 theme would stay.

I truly miss Windows 7, and even Vista- especially in light of this blasphemous 8.1 that's on my laptop right now. What are some of the improvements that Windows 10 has?

I'm on Windows 10 Pro on my home desktop right now. I've been running the Tech previews since they've been available. I've also been forecasting for a couple of years that Windows 10 would be hugely popular.

I couldn't stand 8/8.1 on a PC. I always felt like I had one hand tied behind my back. If you're used to Windows 7 or 8/8.1, the transition to 10 is pretty easy.

For Windows 10, the Start menu is back. If you have a tablet, the OS is optimized for a tablet. If you have a keyboard and mouse, the OS is optimized as a desktop.

I upgraded my old HP EliteBook 2530p running Win7 last night, and it does seem more responsive with Win10.

In a business environment, hold off for a bit as it will take time for 3rd party software to catch up. For example, I hear that McAfee VirusScan Enterprise should have a Win10 compatible version in late August. For Microsoft customers with Software Assurance, the Enterprise version will be available August 1st from the Volume Licensing Service Center.

The upgrade does take up quite a bit of disk space, since the previous OS is saved in a C:\Windows.old folder (just under 32GB on both home systems I've upgraded to Win 10 Pro so far). I'm assuming this is to allow the ability to roll back, if needed.

I'm going to try a little gaming on the new OS here in a bit. So far, the graphics look great.

The Edge browser is smoking Chrome right now.

I'm interested in the Windows 10 tablets that will have the attaching keyboards. Can't wait to see those.

Not bad so far I have been running the beta for a few months now and only get one memory error on shutdown so that's an improvement lol. One thing I noticed is it doesn't play nice with Ubuntu but I'm sure some hacks will be on the way for that.

I wouldn't be too quick to install 10 - let other people beta-test it, 7 will be around for a while and it runs just fine.

My day job involves PCs and Windows servers.

One thing I have noticed is that the fan has been running full bore all day today. My desktop always had a fan that sounded like a jet engine, but it used to cycle up or down depending on load. Now it just runs flat out all the time. Other thing I have noticed via resource monitor is that my CPU is running around 40-50% of it's usage at system idle. Not 100% sure what the computer is trying to do, but it's definitely trying to do something. I'll shut it down tonight, primarily so I don't have to listen to it. But perhaps a reboot will return it to a more tolerable volume.

Are you using Chrome and do you leave it running with multiple tabs?

Not the person you asked but I do.....?

My fans are on a pot and I've always just left on full bore.

The disk is likely working overtime. I would delete any old applications, cleanup junk and temp files then run defrag and chkdsk /f. A new OS upgrade an old install is never optimal. I have been running Win10 since last fall and it is a pretty good OS.

Before you delete anything, open up Task Manager and sort by CPU with highest usage on top. Find out what's consuming your CPU.

Just looking at the resource monitor, svchost.exe is what is accessing the hard drive the most. Firefox, Edge, and Avast seem to be chewing up the RAM. My wife tends to open up 30 tabs with 20 animations per page, then log off with them open, so the browsers are no real surprise. Avast does seem to be continuously busy, though, probably as a result of all the live tile stuff. The CPCU seems to be kept busy first by 'system' followed by Avast and the browsers.

Might be time to switch off Avast and go with Win Defender or something a little more ready for Win10.

Well, don't delete svchost.exe. That process is extremely important. It would not shock me if your antivirus is having some issues.

I do have a warning regarding the Edge browser and these forums. I have now lost 2 lengthy replies when attempting to post them. [Rant1]

Yeah, my understanding, limited though it may be, is that svchost is the executable umbrella under which Win10 executes all of the routines in it's library. I've interpreted it to mean that Win10 is a busy little monkey at system idle, at least a lot more busy than Win7. Might finally be hitting the wall of what my desktop box can handle.

svchost is many things, has been for many releases. Primarily the generic process that runs dll based services.

I just upgraded today-not seeing a big change so far but I just finished the whole thing a few minutes ago. Not being a computer person it may take me awhile.

I'm digging it so far.

For those who reserved their copy but don't have the upgrade available, you can just go download it from Microsoft if you don't want to wait.

I went and installed all new chipset drivers after running the upgrade. Luckily my gigabyte board had Windows 10 compatible drivers with July release dates for all the embedded devices. I also had to reinstall my Nvidia drivers. Other than that, no issues.

I will have to say, the search thing is legitimately useful for finding the controls. Way better than trying to find and/or remember four submenus deep into what I am trying to do.
Wife finally commented on the noise level. Looks like I will be shutting down at night until the problem resolves itself or I buy quieter fans or a new computer.

This tool allows you to manually control fan speed: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

If your fan is flying due to the CPU load though, might not be the best idea to throttle it for noise. You can play around with it though. Your CPU should kill your computer if it gets too hot (it'll blue screen with a CPU watchdog error or something) to prevent damage to itself. You can monitor temps with that program as well.

Shoot, can't believe I didn't post the link; http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I haven't noticed any major issues. My systems are also not exhibiting any extra load, but I was using Microsoft Security Essentials ("Defender" for Win8 and higher) for antivirus on Windows 7.

Well it seems there's a problem with compatibility with my built in microphone. From what I've been able to find on the internet it's a problem waiting for a fix from Windows.
