Had I known it was this bad I would've never considered moving here. Now it's too late.
The cartels are active here and they're hard at work making the lives of the residents of ID miserable. But their illegal activities are felt all across the country.
That's right...I said "cartels" are operating in Idaho. Potato Cartels. Price fixing the wholesale price of potatoes. You probably had no idea who and what you were supporting the last time you went into a grocery store and picked up a bag of Idaho potatoes. Your "spud" money is allowing the Cartel crime bosses to get rich. Think about that next time you order fries at McD's.
Potato growers 'cartel' to pay $25 million to grocers association
BOISE - A federal judge has signed off on a $25 million settlement in a lawsuit between wholesale grocers and potato farming associations accused of forming a price-fixing cartel.
Associated Wholesale Grocers filed the class-action lawsuit in 2010, contending potato growers in Idaho and elsewhere conspired to raise prices by restricting the number of acres planted and taking other steps to limit production.
They said such moves raised the cost of a 10-pound bag of potatoes from about $9 in 2007 to roughly $15 in 2008.
The defendants - including United Potato Growers of America, whose members produce about 75 percent of the potatoes grown in the U.S., denied the claims. They said they were simply running an effective cooperative, focused on helping their members navigate the fluctuating potato market, and that their actions were allowed under the 1922 federal Capper-Volstead Act. The law gives a limited exemption from antitrust rules for agricultural cooperatives.
"...simply running an effective cooperative." Sure they were. And ruining the lives of families everywhere in the process.
