So, the field jacket that I was issued in basic training turns 38 years old at the end of August.
It has served me well over the years, and is thread bare, torn, stained, has an unserviceable zipper and missing the tab. Also it has faded so badly you can barely tell that it is OD Green.
The pull pin and ring from the first live grenade that I got to throw is now the pull tab. Most all the buttons are missing and what little Velcro that was on it is long gone.
It is time to dispose of this go to in any weather jacket and I am needing to know what is the proper way to dispose of this jacket ?

Keep it!!!
WTF are you doing wearing a jacket in August, anyway?
Remove any patches (should have been done when you got out) and either donate to a charity or from the sound of it, drop it in the refuse. The only other use I could imagine is to cut it up for cleaning rags.

I was just going through all the stuff hanging up by the garage door to put away or get ready for next winter.
Patches were removed the day I ETS'ed.

Donate or trash, it's not an American Flag. I know it has sentimentalism and means something to you, as others who served. However it's time to let go. Definitely donating, would be a good way.

Any young neighborhood boy would probably love to have that. At least I would've when I was a kid.

One of those hipster thrift stores would probably give you a few $$.

Ceremoniously burn it. Sprinkle ashes on your favorite French fries. Mmmmmmmm..... Memories....
Burn it. In the company of good friends, good cigars and frosty beverages!
There's a taproom I heard about where the staff will gladly tear it off your shoulders and provide a loving home for it - they feel it is a sacred item.

Hang all of your ribbons and medals on it, from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Serbia, Desert Storm I & II.
Collect free beers, discounts on meals etc....[Coffee]

Give it to a homeless vet -- or hell, anyone who looks like they need something to wear this fall. It's a field jacket, not the flag.

Gotta be some stolen valor type out there that would pay top dollar for such a thing. [Coffee]

It is so thread bare and tatered, a Taser would penetrate it with no resistance........
The weather would not abide by the normal rules of a jacket and get right through. Sounds like a perfect match!
