Old fashioned ground cellar prefabbed for the modern world. Can think of a lot of uses for this.

Cool concept. Wish they didn't charge so much for water in this state.

Hell I'd turn it into a cool (as in temperature) place to sleep at night.

This is awesome. If only I didn't have frakkin' cables/pipes/wires/etc running every six inched through my yard, I'd definitely have a root cellar.

Does it need water? Can I bury this on raw land with survival food stocked inside?

Look at the cross section photo. It shows water coming off an irrigation spigot flowing to and down the sides

The earth is usually at 68 degrees. The extra cooling they get to 40 degrees comes from the evaporation and water temperature.

I saw the spigot and thought I'd better ask. Looks like something that would be better used with someone with access to a well.

Even without the water, for storing canned foods (store bought and home canned) would be wonderful!

I'm pretty sure this will freeze come winter.

Its perfect for mild climates with a surplus of water.

Building a storm shelter out of a pre cast septic tank like you see some places along the highway would be roomier and I'll bet cheaper. I doubt anyone over 5'8" would find that comfortable

Cheaper still to burry some plastic sewer pipes of an appropriate size

How far down does the ground freeze at this elevation though? For the most part, we don't sustain a hard freeze for more than a few days at a time.

2-36" depends on many factors. Up to 6' in some areas in bad winters in the san Louis valley. I had -20 for a week a few years ago in greeley

The door and stairs being uninsulated is the major cause for concern

I was thinking of ways to help increase the insulation, like if you built it so that the door opens up into a shed or house or something.

Under / behind one's garage or shop.

Under / behind one's garage or shop.

Doomsday Preppers special right here. I am sure the ground under a garage stays pretty unfrozen. and the place isn't even visible from outside.

I think this is from Season 1

Interesting.. almost the same as our concrete pond and storage underneath it. It stays very cool all year long.
