I am new when it comes to muzzleloader hunting. But I did buy leftover license for deer gmu38 for muzzleloader...

Now I am trying to buy a most modern but Colorado legal muzzleloader. Any suggestions?
I was looking at Thompson and CVA inline, break action muzzleloaders.

Thanks a lot

I've got the CVA Optima II and the inline style is pretty fool proof. I didn't have a chance to shoot anything last year, but was confident that the rifle would have gotten the job done if I did my part. I don't have experience with any other brands, but picked the CVA for best price and decent reviews. I will say that the sights on the CVA seem a bit cheap, or at least the hardware does. The screw starts to deform before you can get it tight enough to not move.around. I looked into aftermarket sites and they are the same site, but minus the adjustment markings, but with hex screws instead of flathead screws. Good luck this year!

I've killed a lot of elk muzzleloader hunting. I have a Remington genesis which is no longer made, but any of the new models out there are good to go. Best thing is to hit the range, figure out your bullet/powder combination and stick with it. Something out to 200 yards is all you need. With the right bullet and powder you can be within 4 inches at 200 yards with open sights pretty easily on a bench. Then practice shooting from logs or tree limbs, or carry a monopod so you can be comfortable.
keep your powder dry and you will be fine with any of the modern in lines.

I have a CVA Accura with the Bergara barrel and love it. Got it for the same reason as Irving: price, reviews, plus I know guys that have them ans recommended them. For a first BP rifle, I think it's a good choice.

Hit the range like Sniper said and have fun getting it all dialed in. And remember to CLEAN the shit out of it every time you go out shooting.

Good luck in 38. It's basically my back yard.

I have the first Knight Stainless steal 50 Cal rifle.
I have not fired or hunted with it yet so it's still new in the box.
Would like to sometime with my new job I might be able to afford a hunt this year.
Coyotes or beaver anyone? Deer later this fall I'm havening fun scouting now.

I'm more of a tradionalist. I like the sidelocks, I shot percussion for elk as I don't have a .50 flinter. I have picked up several TC Renegades and Hawkens at pawn shops for under $150, a few were under $100. All have been good shooters and reliable. I've also picked up a few CVA sidlelocks for the same prices. I prefer the TCs, but they will work. My father and I picked up cow tags for muzzleloader down here in 85.

I bought CVA Apex with extra 3006 bergata barrel, so it doubles as rifle too. For muzzleloader I bought see all sight. I will be using Aerotip powerbelt 250 for ammo.

Anybody knows gunsmith who could install peep type sights on cva apex muzzle loader,( no drilled hole for front sight).

Try BPtactical...Bert.. He is highly regarded on this forum. I have not had any work done by him but when the need arises he would be the first person I contact.

To stay on topic last year was my first year muzzleloader and got me a nice size doe. Same area this year with tags for Elk and deer antlered. GMU 35,36,361 add 45 for deer.

I use an inexpensive Winchester..

I run a CVA.

Get lots of range time in. Some powder will work better for your rifle than others. I discovered blackhorn 209 powder absolutely wouldn't run in my CVA without buying an aftermarket modified breech plug.

Also, after installing open sights on my rifle, I discovered I couldn't get a low enough cheek weld to use them because of the raised comb which was designed for using a scope. Had to get a new stock to use the open sights.

Get out early so you have time to make modifications you may need.

I was planing to use blackhorn 209 in my cva apex, would you suggest any Colorado legal alternatives. thanks for the advice on the need of the high sights.
I will be scouting GMU 38 this weekend, any suggestions where to start.

I'll post a picture of the two different breech plugs tomorrow. With the blackhorn in my CVA with factory breech plug, only 1 out of five rounds would fire. The ones that didn't would just spit out the barrel from the primer charge. I could literally go pick up the bullet 10 ft away. It wasn't until after two trips to the range that I discovered with my Google fu that blackhorn didn't work and there was an aftermarket breech plug available.

New breech plug has given me 100% reliability with blackhorn and very good accuracy.

I used FFFG Triple Seven in my CVA. I think FFFG might be the pistol powder, but I've fired the gun 14 times now and everything seems to be okay with consistent results.

Whatever you do, don't double load your muzzle loader! Good luck and be safe.

A little late to the game but I agree with encore, don't rule out the traditional. Much better reliability and more lethal than what some might have you believe, even with patch and roundball. Getting closer is half the fun IMHO. Not all that hard to maintain either. There is a primitive club in the Springs with some really nice people willing to teach.

I would be willing to bet that was more than a double charge of black powder. Looks like someone was trying to use modern smokeless powder.

I am all ready to go. CVA Apex will be using see all sight, powerbelt aerolite bullets, blackhorn 209 powder.
I have GMU 38 tag thus I will hunt in golden gate canyon park(jeffco side) and off eastern portal.

We confirmed it was black powder in his second load, God only knows what he had loaded in the barrel the previous season.

It could be that he only short started the ball as well. Given that it is the entire barrel that is split, this would be my guess.

I went out yesterday and all we saw was a ridiculous amount of hunters. My normal hunting spot that normally has about eight hunters had 30 trucks there, and we didn't even go to the main campground. We ended up going to 5 different wildlife areas and two different places in national forest. All but one wildlife area was overcrowded. I'm hunting in unit 85. All that driving and the only cows we saw were less than a mile from the house.

Irving
09-13-2015, 12:49
Our hunting spot was also over crowded yesterday. Had it all to ourselves last year; yesterday there were four trucks. Got there earlier this morning and there was only the one, but it had three people. Didn't run into each other, but there wasn't much going on so they might not even come back.

At least saw some bucks on the way in this morning, and a doe running around late morning. Very fresh signs every where and even heard a bugle from a bull. I guess some out of towners got a nice 6x5 bull yesterday as well.

Things are looking up.

Just wow. That's a lot of destruction right there. I was thinking double charge. Went back and saw that it read double load. Didn't realize it would be that incredible. Hope the shooter came out ok.

We ran into a guy who had a pretty neat sling for his muzzleloader. It was basically just two loops that supported the barrel and the stock, and could be held hands free and horizontal. The back loop was loose, so it would just slide off the back when the gun was shouldered. It looked like a pretty neat idea, but when we asked where he got it, he said a buddy had gotten it for him so he didn't know. Also, his gun was a newer flint lock and was impressively light.

Anyway, anyone familiar with that kind of sling?
