While getting instructions for errands on the commute home wife informs me swamp cooler started making a racket so she shut it off and unplugged it.

Did not get chance to check it until after a late dinner.

When I did this is what I found.

He must have worked his way on to picnic bench, picnic table (both stored under cooler on deck) and into the over flow tube.

Looks like when he tries to enter spinning cage fan, one of the spokes caught him and sliced him 12" behind the head and wrapped the other 3' around the shaft.

It was tight enough to stop the fan and cause belt to jump and slip (racket as defined by Mrs bo). I had to pull while turning wheel to unwind him.

Made a heluva mess. Spent half hour cleaning it until the 8000 lightening strike per second scared me into the house. Probably another hour tomorrow nite to get it going.

He went out with a bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang!

If you miss some of the splattered snake-bits, your swamp cooler is gonna be blowing that lovely smell of death all through the house. I have a power washer if you need it.

Will see how it goes tomorrow. I pretreated it with simple green and it seemed to cut the smell pretty good and knocked the bits and blood off the metal parts. The issue will be with the mats. Treated them with simple green with a shot of bleach as well, rinsed and retreated.

He probably heard someone refer to the fan housing as a squirrel cage and thought he'd grab an easy meal.

Simple green isn't a disinfectant. Just replace the pads and use some bleach solution on the base area. This way you know you've done everything to minimize air borne particulates.

Simple green in too damn smelly to use on the pads. Your house is going to reek if you use them now. Will probably be a health hazard as well breathing it. Replace pads.! Simple green in my ultrasonic stinks out my workshop for a few days. Can't imagine filling my house with the smell.

Last month, I had an increasing death smell coming from my truck vents.
I finally looked around under the hood and found a dead/maggot covered squirrel layed out on top of my skid plate, under the radiator. Had to poke it out with a stick and flood it with the hose. Smell went away in another week.
Good luck.

[emoji106] Finally, a problem with a relatively simple fix, but nasty chore.

Another late work day. So not much time to mess with it. Primary cleaning finished about dark :30.

Had to drill holes in the bottom of fan shroud so cleaning solution/rinse could be drained. Hoping no snake bits or parts are down in there. No way to really inspect it without removing entire cooler from house and disassemble it.

What was novel and amusing has become a major PIA.

Will reinspect tonite and hopefully fire it up.
