I've got a hunting trip coming up soon and need help with a cooler. I wanted to get actual experience with yeti or similar style.

Whatcha got? How many quarts? How much $$$? And where'd you get it from.

Thanks.

And you didn't stop by and say hi? wtf.

HCWT, I don't have any higher end coolers, never had a really good one, but I've heard about those Yetis. Pricey though.

I took a week long trip to Texas and one bag of ice lasted the entire trip in a yeti. Size wise, get what you can pick up by yourself. The largest is a huge pain for one guy to get into a truck.

$250 for a cooler that won't hold much more than a six pack. No thanks.

Holly cow! Are those things made of real Yeti skin? How can a cooler cost that much? You can buy two Coleman's and an Igloo and still have gas money for ice runs.

I think even the Pelican coolers are cheaper.

I've got one, but I only use it for trips to Lake Powell in the summer. A block of ice only lasts about a day down there in a standard cooler.

I wouldn't spend the money for one unless you plan on camping in prolonged summer heat.

They certainly work well, but a $50 cooler should be just fine for a fall hunt.

I have the Grizzly coolers, a 150 quart and a 500 quart. They are still pricey but a lot less then the Yeti. They have a heavy duty molded in handle and a 2" drain plug so you don't have to wait three hrs to drain them if your ice does ever melt. I put 2 quartered up elk in the big one after a trip to New Mexico, with plenty of room for 70lbs of ice. The big one is stupid big and only gets used on longer hunting trips. I actually use it to store gear in it for the trip and then I have it for meat if we are that lucky. The 150 quart is much more manageable but will still break your back trying to get it in the truck if it's all loaded down with ice and beer.

I did the White Rim Trail with one, in Sept, and had ice at the end.

Heard good things about Grizzly. Looks a little more user friendly.

I also use the extreme coolers by Coleman. With two bags of ice and camping for 5 days 4 nights, it kept food plenty cool.

I have A huge igloo that does okay but only in the shade, direct sunlight melts the ice in a day or two. My hunting buddies have yetis and you can leave them out in direct sun and still have ice for 3-4 days in the summer. Hunting season and ice will last for weeks in the shade as long as you don't open and close it all the time.
my neighbor bought the hopper 30, while very expensive I have seen it keep ice in the middle of summer in the back seat of his truck parked outside for 5 days and the water was still very cold 7 days later, beer was still very chilly.
on our recent trip to Nebraska we did a test with the colster from yeti. After 1 hour a beer without was on the verge of Luke warm, not very good. With the colster it was like it had just been pulled out of the fridge. Completely worth the money.

I agree buy a (cheap) coleman 5 day cooler and keep it out the sun and your ice will last a longtime. This is what we did on a recent vacation it kept the milk cold and other stuff for a good 4 days before I felt I should ice just as a safety factor. If you just want to look at expensive cooler cabelas and sportsmans warehouse both carry them.

I bought the 150 quart Pelican last year, best price I found was Adorama, $520.00 ish shipped. Used it on hunting trips to Neb and WY, ice lasts on average 9-10 days. I don't open unnecessarily, only to throw meat into and get vittles out of, keep it in back of truck and park in shade as much as possible. Liked it enough that I just bought the smaller 65 quart at Sportsmans on Sunday, I needed something smaller for dove hunting, it was $330.00. These things are built right.

I have bought many of the cheaper coolers over the last 20 or so years at $75.00+ and was getting tired of having to buy them every couple years. If I add up all the $$$ spent on coolers, these will be money ahead in the long run. Only time will tell, but so far I am happy with my choice.

I won a yeti tundra 65 earlier this summer. A couple weekends ago I loaded it up with two - 1gal frozen water jugs, lunch, some snacks and bottled water for a fishing trip on a Sat morning. Ate my lunch, snacks and drank most of the water. The cooler stayed in the back of my truck until I finally cleaned it out on the following Tuesday evening. The water jugs were still partially frozen even though that week was in the 90's and the back of my truck I'm sure was even hotter.

4 days still cold in the heat. Not bad especially considering the cooler was mostly empty....a full cooler stays cold the longest.

I use aYeti 50 for trips less than a week also a 75 for my multiple week trips to the farm in Kansas. The extra height in these models helps when large ice blocks "I freeze 1/2 gallon jugs" are laid on the floor. Ice will melt in them but when you use large blocks and keep the lid closed, the blocks will stay frozen for a week in the Kansas heat. I had a nice metal Coleman cooler, piece of garbage. Hinges pulled away from the case, plug leaked, ice melted in a few hours and the latch sucked.

So are these basically Chinese made knockoffs? Any reports on durability over time vs Yeti? Yeti claims they are made in the US and the Philippines which basically means they are made in the Philippines and boxed p in the US.

Buy a pelican on eBay brand-new and you'll save some bucks. It's about the only place you can get discounts on the really good coolers. I picked up a brand-new 65 quart pelican for $240 with free shipping.

www.frigidrigid.com (http://www.frigidrigid.com) -anything else is second best.

Mine kept ice for 12 days and was opened daily in Florida heat when the 2004 hurricanes knocked out power. During normal times it lived on my boat and I put one bag of ice in it each week, they are the only uppity cooler I've seen that is worth the money. Icey-Tek's, Yeti, etc. don't seem to keep ice anywhere close to their claims.

For the price of some of these coolers I'd rather just toss a diesel generator and a chest freezer in the bed of a pickup. Might cost a little more, but at least then I'd have a generator and a chest freezer for other stuff.

I have the standard fare, 2 Coleman Extremes and a Pelican 65 quart. I have taken several multi-day trips with the Pelican and the Extremes, and the Pelican, for me, was worth the money. I have been able to keep 3/4 full jugs of water frozen for several days in 90 degree plus heat in the Pelican, not so in the Extremes. The latches are very good as is the seal. I have borrowed some "more expensive" ones and I think the Pelican is about the best out there and it does cost less.

The Coleman outlets had some great deals on their version of the "yeti" last year around this time. Like 50% off if I remember correctly.

I couldn't justify it and bought 2 - 150 qt extremes for $200.

They worked just great. I use to work at Coleman when the extreme and stainless steel cooler came to market.

Here's an article about the best bang for the buck coolers and a little bit about the high end ones too. There is even a footnote about how coolers do their thing.

I had looked in to getting a high end cooler this summer. Never could justify one for my use, but Sams club has the Igloo Sportsman 20 and 55 qt roto molded coolers. The one in Aurora had some a month or so ago. The 55qt is $200, which is significantly less than a pelican or yeti of the same size.

They felt decently built. Not as well built as the pelican I handled though. When I was standing in Sams club trying to decide if I was going to buy it, I was honestly thinking to myself that for $200 I wanted better quality.

FYI walmart was carrying 65qt pelicans earlier this year. I've seen forum posts where they weren't moving so Walmart marked them down to less than $200.

I picked up the large pelican at sportsmans. It held up well on a week long camping trip. Lifetime warranty vs 5 year warranty on the competition. If you go the pelican route, costco.com has them for a bit cheaper. $280 at costco.com. The 65 qt cooler weighs 50 lbs.

Yep. I got back from camping left it in the trailer for another 3 days. Still cold, still had a bit of solid ice, 8 days of cold. Under 50 bucks 5 years ago. Good coolers.

(http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/fishing/2016/03/ice-chest-throwdown-12-top-end-coolers-ranked-and-reviewed)Thread bump because Field and Stream published a pretty decent review of 12 high end coolers: Ice-Chest Throwdown: 12 Top-End Coolers Ranked and Reviewed (http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/fishing/2016/03/ice-chest-throwdown-12-top-end-coolers-ranked-and-reviewed)

Last fall the weather stayed warm for the second rifle elk season and I knew my frozen foods wouldn't keep for ten days, so I popped for the Igloo Sportsman 55 rotomolded cooler. Sam's Club sells the Sportsman 55 (http://www.samsclub.com/sams/sportsman-cooler/prod10150470.ip) for $200, a bargain in the lineup of high end coolers. Field and Stream rated it as the best value, and ranked it 4th in overall performance just behind the Yeti 50. I'm not surprised given my experience with it.

Most of my hunting meals were hearty soups and stews made at home, vacuum packed in food saver bags and frozen. I could have cooked them sous vide (in a pot of boiling water on the stove), but it's faster and easier to empty the package to heat in a sauce pan. I took two coolers: the Sportsman 55 held only frozen foods, the old Coleman was for cold foods likes veggies, eggs, juice, and for partial thawing of the frozen items a day or two in advance. Both were pre-cooled with gallon jugs of ice. The Coleman went with 2 gallon jugs of ice and ~3 lbs of dry ice, the Sportsman was filled full with the frozen food, a gallon jug of ice and ~5 lbs of dry ice. The dry ice transferred it's cold and evaporated after a day in the field, but the all the leftover food remained frozen for 10 sunny, warm days. On day ten it was more like "iced", slightly soft, not hard frozen.

The coolers were stacked as in the photo, on the partly shaded side of the camp trailer, and covered with a tarp. From experience, there's no way the old Coleman would have kept things frozen beyond 3-4 days in those warm conditions, even starting with 5-8 lbs. of dry ice. Two hundred bucks seems like a lot of $$$ for a cooler, but I'm really impressed with how it performed. These super insulated coolers are great for camping in warm weather where you can't easily get ice or dry ice.

We're planning to take it to Moab in a week or two....

Perused the thread and didn't see it yet. So...

For the money you spend on one of these "high end" coolers that seem to work about as well as any cooler made in the last 70 years or so.

Just pony up for an ARB fridge and a battery w/ some alligator or direct plug to your truck battery.

I have one and use the OEM plug in the back of my Tacoma. I also have used a lithium ion battery pack set up with good results. It cools quickly, runs efficiently, have been proven tough and reliable, can freeze ice, quiet, can be used as a second fridge/freezer at home when not on the road/camping, etc, etc.

The 50 QT. seems to be the Godielocks size and price. It's what I have and rarely need all the room. Although I do try and keep it full using water bottles to fill empty space. Which can be frozen in anticipation of lack of power and use the fridge as a cooler.

http://www.amazon.com/ARB-10800472-Fridge-Freezer--Quart/dp/B002Q1INDM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459285217&sr=8-1&keywords=arb+refrigerator

IIRC, this is a decent price. I paid $750 for a 'used but in new condition' from a CL seller. I RARELY see them for sale used, especially on CL.

The battery pack I use.

http://www.amazon.com/Antigravity-Batteries-AG-XP-10-Multi-Function-Starter/dp/B00MQ5Z5F2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

Needed this to make it work.

http://www.amazon.com/BiXPower-Cigarette-Socket-Connector-Adapter/dp/B007SP4KV0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00

The fridge can be plugged into 12v/120v.

I saw it as a lifelong purchase much like my Honda generator.
