Every year we come up to Vail with the family for a few days this time of year. Coming over the pass today there are several spot where I see some cars or trucks going both directions pulled over off the side of the road in the grass at random spots. Are there fishing spots or something that these guys are hiking up to? Just curious...

Hunting. Scouting for Elk. Popular area for such. Archery Elk opens any day now.
Yup. Archery season. Wife asked me the same thing.
When we drive over the passes I play 'spot the elk', and often see bulls on the south facing slope above the highway. It looks like pretty good elk country to me.

Mushroom pickers.
Mushroom pickers.
Come on. This is Colorado. They're probably up there checking on their "grow".

I'm guessing hunters as it was almost all big trucks and not VW vans or Subarus...

All you gotta do is look at the vehicles:
Prius - hiking
Tacoma or Subaru with roofbox - late season skiing
Lifted 4x4 - Elk
1988 econobox - mushrooms/pot
It's a pretty severe generalization, but I've got a box of 9mm that says I'm right, if someone could find a way to actually poll the people on the side of the road.
