View Full Version : Stuck sight screw
A previous owner must have used epoxy on the screw for a Novak sight on an S&W.
It shoots two inches right at 25 meters, so I want to drift the rear sight.
I cannot get the screw to move. Allen wrenches round out.
I have tried acetone with no effect.
I have not tried heat. I have no good way to do that and am afraid of messing up the gun.
Any other suggestions?

Heat. If you can load a dishwasher, change a flat tire. You can apply heat from a heat gun. here's your cheapest option, if someone local doesn't have one.

OR have a smith do it. You're going to spend money somewhere. Why not try it at home.

Hit it with Knoll or PB BLASTER. Use a soldering iron to apply heat to the screw directly. Get it hot enough it is smoking, use a good quality Allen bit for a 1/4" driver. Give the bit a good rap with a hammer before trying to break it loose, that shock value helps.
If the screw is wallowed out from the Allen try a Torx, they will usually bite in a wallowed Allen.

Could you recommend a good smith, if those options fail ? ;)

If you don't have a soldering iron, you can heat the wrench when it is in the screw also. Like Bert mentioned, a bit for a driver handle is probably the best. The shock is also a great tip. If the socket is stripped some, you can shock it and reform the socket by using a punch that is a little larger than the socket. This will push the metal back into the socket and reform is a bit. Strips easier after that, but has worked for me MANY times. Just be careful to not damage the threads.

I will see if I can find one......
Good suggestions. I will get the bit and give this a try this weekend.
Borrowed a soldering iron and got at Torx (T7) and it came right out.
I moved the sight. Now I need to get out to the South Site and check the point of impact.
Thanks again for the help.

Great news!
Glad it didn't require surgery.
