View Full Version : Simple Question, Not so simple Answer.
I was just asked a question by my 13 year old nephew Benjamin that I really couldn't answer. He asked me if I could have any gun in the world what would it be? Well we always talk about SHTF and 3 gun setups and etc, but if you could just have your "Dream Gun", what would it be?

Does it come with any ammo?

A true shtf/long-term survival weapon would be a heavy duty repeating air rifle, in a caliber large enough for medium sized game or two-legged predators.
I'm thinking something like a modernized Girandoni air rifle equivalent, like that used by Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition.

Ar-15
Not a gun per se but I'd like to see the NFA revoked so I could be allowed to buy all the fun guns I want.

Either the Portal Gun or the Gravity Gun.
(Hey, you didn't specify real >.>)
AR-10
Can hunt with it
Can defend the home front with it, close up or longer ranges
Can find ammo most anywhere
Portable, unlike the rail gun in my garage

If I could magically be given any firearm in existence ... well this will likely change day to day but lately I've been wishing I could find and afford an HK P7M10 (blue with a set of Nill grips). I think that would make me happy ... for a few minutes at least :p.
Like this only Blue (ok I'd take Stainless if that's all that is out there ... I'd also gladly accept an M13 or even M8 ... but would prefer the .40)

If I could get it, I would take the Hollywood model 94 Winchester in 30-30, or maybe 1873 in 45-70, never have to reload.

The derringer Booth used to kill Lincoln.
As I understand the question, it's not "what gun would you choose if you could only have one gun?", it's "what gun would you add to your collection if you could have anything you want?".
It's an interesting question. From a financial perspective, I'd want the personal firearm of Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, or Al Capone. You know, something with wild collector value.
From the perspective of a gun I would actually shoot, I'd likely choose an AI AX of some sort.
Thinking of guns I've just always wanted to own, I'd love a Thompson SMG, specifically probably the M1928A1, though I'm no expert. To be of real interest, my dream Tommy would had to have served on D-Day.

The Remington 700 in .30-06 that I had to sell several years ago when time were tough and I was out of work. I miss that rifle and every gun show I attend I scan the racks looking for it. I will know it if I see it, it was set up just so, it was mine.
My dream gun would be a nice custom MP5k-PDW with a suppressor... yeah, and it'll have to stay a dream....
I always thought the Grease guns from WWII were cool, and I'd pay to shoot one at a machine gun shoot.

They are fun. I got to play and qualify with one (stirling) in 82 with the Brits. I did think the course of fire to qualify with one was strange but it teaches trigger control. [Flower] As far as something I would want A Stg 44 comes to mind. The closest I will ever see is if I build a Fal in aluminum chambered in 300 BO. [Beer]
A Sturmgewehr 44 would be pretty awesome. Then I could actually admit that I truly own an "assault rifle."
I would need to stock up on the Privi brass and learn how to reform .308 brass, but it might be worth it if I hit the lottery.

One I'd actually shoot, an AI PSR Kit with an S&B 5-25 PMII on top and TBAC suppressor, And about a 4 other barrels that I'd add to the mix in different calibers. Or a JP LR-07 with a custom chambering in 6X47 Lapua, topped with an S&B Super Short.
for a pure giggle stick, M2 or minigun.
and Collector/Value gun something along the lines of what TimK said, not sure on that, then I'd probably sell it, and buy most everything listed above and go have a ton of fun with it.

That gun is insane. I swear it sounds like a long and loud fart when the fire it. I've heard it even slows the plane down a little when fired, not sure if that is true.

Technically it is true (Newton's 2nd law) but it is not an easily measurable amount. The 30mm rounds weigh less than 1lb each, if I remember correctly, and the plane can weigh as much as 40,000lbs when loaded up. Even firing several hundred rounds over a course of a few seconds is hard to account for because of the changing dynamics of the aircraft's flight profile, angle of attack, thrust levels, drag levels, coefficient of lift, etc.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger
The A-10 engines were initially susceptible to flameout when subjected to gases generated in the firing of the gun. When the GAU-8 is being fired, the smoke from the gun can make the engines stop, and this did occur during initial flight testing.[2] Gun exhaust is essentially oxygen-free, and is certainly capable of causing flame-outs of gas turbines. The A-10 engines now have a self-sustaining combustion section. When the gun is fired the igniters come on to reduce the possibility of a flame-out.[15]
The average recoil force of the GAU-8/A is 10,000 pounds-force (45 kN),[3][16] which is slightly more than the output of one of the A-10's two TF34 engines (9,065 lbf / 40.3 kN each).[17] While this recoil force is significant, in practice a cannon fire burst only slows the aircraft a few miles per hour in level flight.[15]
