View Full Version : Damn...Now I can't wait for Season 5 (Longmire)

Longmire season 4 was released on Netflix on the 10th. I kinda binge-watched all of them by today. Started really good, slowed just a little, ended huge. Now I have to wait a year for the next season...assuming it's renewed. Pretty sure it will be.

Only about 363 days left...

Anyone else a fan?

I've watched through season 3 but haven't started season 4 yet.

I'm glad it was renewed. I don't know how many more seasons the writers have left in them, but I wouldn't see this going more than 5 seasons.

Yeah, I know. Murder capital of the world! I can get past that, though, because I really like the characters, the setting and the scenery.

Self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head don't leave pellets in your dome. They leave giant holes. Hell, even from 10 feet away they do.

Aside from starting out the latest season with something so stupid, I'm still enjoying it.

Finished up Season four, and I can't believe they left it with such a cliffhanger!

I'm loving that Netflix is able to run the shows longer than 44 minutes, and I'm also loving the overarching theme and plot for this season.

Ways to insure a Season 5: go to Netflix, sign into your account and rate the series. Try to get relatives hooked on the show. :) The more viewers, the better.

The wife and I enjoy the Longmire series. The one thing that drives me bonkers is how inconsistent they are with the loaded state of Walt's 1911. One scene the hammer is down the next scene the hammer is cocked, the next it's down again. I have also lost count of how many times he draws his 1911 on a bad guy with the hammer down and it still goes BANG when he pulls the trigger without needing to rack it first or thumb cock the hammer.

BUT this inconsistency is pretty common in a lot of TV shows and movies.

Its just funny to see how many times in the same episode that his 1911 is changing its hammer cocked state magically on its own. Check it out the next time you watch an episode.

I have been meaning to pick up one of the books. I know Walt is much older in the books and there are other significant character differences between tv and book versions.

You've overlooked the different grips and focused on the hammer??? I like it (guns in movies & tv) in general when you clearly see a Glock, then a Beretta for the up close.

Wife and I started watching it last night. Go through the first two episodes.

I lived in Wyoming for 5 years when I was in school and I retired from the WY NG so I feel sort of like an "adopted" Wyomingite, and I'm always interested in how the Cowboy State is portrayed in pop culture.

I like it OK so far, except that my wife asked "So, does somebody get murdered in this town every week? That's a higher crime rate than Denver!"

I was kind of hoping for a long, serialized story line like Breaking Bad (I think BB has pretty much ruined me for almost any TV show, it was that good.)

A few observations:

1. Does anyone know where it's filmed? The scene in Episode 1 where they were at the rifle range looked EXACTLY like the rifle range in Laramie. And most of the other scenes look very authentically Wyoming, too. The "town" scenes could be in parts of Laramie but they could almost be anywhere in WY, maybe Riverton or Lander? Possibly DuBois?

2. Glad to see I'm not the only one who's annoyed as hell about the way Henry talks. What the hell, this isn't some 1950's Western! I'm surprised the AIM or some other activist group isn't lighting them up with hate mail for stereotyping.

3. Amish/Mennonites in WY? Someone's got their "Flyover states" mixed up, big time.

4. "I'll see if he has any guns registered to him." That kind of talk will get you shot in Wyoming.

Anyway, we'll probably keep watching. As the wife says, we pay for Netflix, might as well. Not like there's anything decent on regular TV. I'm hoping they'll pick up more multi-episode story lines instead of neatly resolving the conflict in each hour. That's going to get tiresome.

I love the scenery shots. That's another very "breaking bad" style of thing but with mountains and prairies substituted for New Mexico's deep blue sky and rocky desert.

Martinjmpr
09-25-2015, 09:27
Oh, I forgot to add: Has anyone else here read any of C.J. Box's books? This reminds me a LOT of those, except that the main character is a sheriff instead of a game warden.

Martinjmpr

Never mind question 1. Filmed in New Mexico according to teh interwebz.

Actually makes sense. Closer to big cities and they should have a longer filming season. Winter comes early to WY. We normally got measurable snowfall in the first week of September and often our last measurable snowfall was around Memorial day.

In my job a spend a lot of time on the phone with people from the Rez (mostly in New Mexico but some in WY and MT.) The Indians I talk to do have a distinctive way of talking but that ain't it.

And AFAIK Mennonites don't shun technology the way Amish do. I don't even think the Rumspringa is a Mennonite tradition, pretty sure that's an Amish thing.

I'll admit that it annoyed me always seeing his 1911 holstered with the hammer forward. I do think the show has been fairly consistent with him cocking the hammer when he pulls his gun out. I do know a lot of guys, especially old timers. like to chamber a round and then ride the hammer forward to carry the gun that way. In many cases it's not a lack of education because when I have brought this up they always say, "I know, but I prefer it this way." Not sure why. I'm not saying the show is depicting the sheriff as a guy that realizes he's doing this and Hollywood loves the sound of a hammer cocking so it could all be accidental.

Just finished season 4. Nice cliffhanger ending...

Observation: Not sure exactly when Netflix took over but I noticed that when they did, two things happened: First, each episode went from 45 minutes to an hour (I guess because they didn't have to allow for commercials) and second, instead of having a "murder of the week" that gets solved by the end of the episode, they went with longer story lines that cross over multiple episodes, more like other modern television dramas on Netflix.

I'm looking forward to that transition.

Been trying to watch that show. On episode 5. Unfortunately IMO the acting , plot , premises is so bad. It's a chore trying to get through an episode. Thankfully i'm surfing the web , using ITTBL as background noise.
Like Breaking Bad (START ANOTHER THREAD IF YOU WANT TO BASH MY OPINION) it's a show that has an audience, just not us as some of them.
I'd watch Wild Kingdom reruns 24/7 before subjecting myself to BB or ITTBL.

Well, I didn't run into Walt up here, but one of the buildings I was supposed to inspect was the (Bob) Nelson Museum of the West. The adjuster decided she didn't need me, and told me to leave, so I walked around the museum instead. It's very cool with a lot of old guns, uniforms of both commissioned and non-commissioned calvary soldiers from the Indian Wars through WWII. A whole display about the Barkers (Ma Barker), including some of their pistols. Pretty cool little place.

Shhhhh. Let him think it's a Made for TV movie ;)

For me it's space filler when there's crap (mostly) on commercial TV.
Shows like Longmire, Daredevil, Stranger Things, Man in the High Castle & Bosch (Amazon) are shows that would fail / lose the audience on commercial tv due to them making the viewer think.
Rather than Text or Tweet their show favorite, allowing them to move on to the semi-finals.

I don't think it's that (but it could be), it just seems like the characters aren't really developing much.

I held out longer than I thought. It took me a week to get thru the first 9 episodes of the season. Watching the finale tonight. I've enjoyed it as much as any other season though they seem to be dwelling on a few issues a little too much for the intrigue thing.

So the big question this season is: Jacob Nighthorse: Bad guy or just a victim of Walt's paranoia? They've been very cagey with it all season long.

"Binge watching" it shows how much the show changed over the years. The first couple of seasons it was the "murder of the week" style where each episode was pretty much independent from the others and where the "big story" was wrapped up by the end of the episode.

Then when they switched from (AMC?) to Netflix they started incorporating longer, multi-episode serialized story lines. I think this season they tried to make Walt less of a straight-arrow character and try to introduce some ambiguity into him, make him a little less "perfect", I guess so he appears more "human?"

The Moretti story line, IMO, is a little silly and contrived.

I'll refrain from saying more out of respect for those who haven't watched the full season yet. ;)

I'm not well schooled in the Marvel Universe. I think much of what I knew in my yoot has been pushed out by adult life.

I did watch the first 3 episodes of Luke Cage, and I like where they're going with it. Definitely not G rated.

We watch Geeking out. The host had Mike Colter (Luke) and Simone (Misty) Missick on. Kevin Smith commented , something to the effect, on the Netflix (Daredevil, Jessica Jones & Luke Cake) Marvel shows, saying. You guys get more action (sex) than any comic book character i've seen. What's with that.

I'd like to see Longmire continue in the way of the Spencer and Jesse Stone novels. Gritty stories featuring western characters, lands and values are too few and far between. Flyover country holds enough people to elect a U.S. president. Hollywood should open an office in Absaroka County.

How about a TV movie where Henry Standing Bear and police chief Matthias go to Standing Rock reservation to prevent the government from putting a pipeline on Indian land? :D

Yea, it is funny how writers of the world's greatest detectives and other heroes continue to portray their protagonists as out of touch technologically. Those classic stories could live on if they were re written and simply revised out the phone booths and car phones. Dan Wessons and lever carbines too. Oh no, not lever action rifles, what will Walt do? Heavens forbid should he tote an AR.

Heard an interview on NPR yesterday with the author of Longmire. I just caught the end but two things stood out for me.

1) The author says that he quickly realized that Walt needed to expand his jurisdiction because "How many people can this guy kill in the least populated state in the US without expanding his territory?"
2) Season 6 on Netflix will be the final season.

St Mary Mead suffered their fair share of homicides. What is it about old ladies solving murder mysteries? Of course Sir Henry was much more helpful than Sheriff Pierce and everyone is easier to tolerate than that stuffy Belgian fellow.

All you really need to solve mysteries is a pro like Eddie Valiant. [Flower]
