View Full Version : Got a buck. Recommend a taxidermist.
Got a buck and I think he looks nice enough that I'd like to have him mounted. I have no idea what to do now. Can someone make some recommendations for me please? We're in Canon City now, but any where that does great work from here to Denver Metro.

Or it didn't happen.......
In the muzzleloading section. I don't have any where to keep this thing cool so I found a place in town.

Best Bet Taxidermy is amazing. Between my dad and I we have over 20 mounts from birds, to fish, to big game. Highly recommend Rick.

I have had 2 elk shoulder mounts done by this guy. They turned out nice and were reasonably priced:

Also- congrats.
I found a place down here and just got it turned in a few minutes ago. Thanks guys! They have a full bear mount down there (not their work) for under $1,000.

Congrats!!
Congrats!
for future reference I take my stuff to almost alive taxidermy. His website sucks but his work is amazing. My neighbor has 30+ animals done with him ranging from deer to elk to buffalo. Plus dozens of birds as well. All my stuff has been superb.
There is a guy in Canon who does good work I forgot his name though.

I took it to Big Timber South and was very pleased with hire I was treated for a noobie.

Make sure you have good pictures of the antlers and keep them until you get the mount back. Make sure it is yours. It is a lot easier with antlered animals. I took in a large chocolate bear to be tanned and still don't think I have the same bear. The DOW did an investigation, but they can not prove anything, my word against theirs. Four shots from a .45-70, all hits in the vitals. The hide I got back only has two entrance wounds, and much smaller hide.
That's no good to hear. He stamped a metal bracelet with my invoice number and snapped it onto the antlers. Said I could pick them up in a few days until they are ready for them.

You should post up a pic of your buck
It's in the muzzleloader thread. I'll try to remember when I get home.
Did you do a European mount?
Full shoulder. Have the rack at home now.

Thats a good looking animal. Good job
Thank you, sorry he was feeling so cheeky and sticking his tongue out during the picture.
Here is to venison. Once you get over the mental part it's delicious. Steaks are better than roasts imo. Chili is great. Burger needs fat.
I don't know any other way to attach them.

Yup. Chili is delicious. I grind the meat with bacon to make hamburger or with beef fat.... Infidelicious[emoji6]
I have a pressure cooker chili recipe that I plan on using with the round steaks.

Saw it in the ML thread! Great looking buck, congrats!
I ended up taking my buck to Big Timber South in Canon City. I thought they did a good job. I wanted to post pictures up in here in case anyone ever stumbles across this thread. Terrible lighting, and I don't have a cool room to put it in, but I am very happy with the results, and especially the price. Took just over a year to get him back.

I have that coyote I recently shot in my freezer. I think I'm going to take sniper7's suggestion and contact Almost Alive Taxidermy and see if I can get this coyote mounted. I don't know if it will still be okay once I froze it, or if I did a good enough job skinning, but I'll take her down there and explore my options. I'll try to remember to update if I get anything done.
Looks pretty nice in the pics!
I was just at my taxidermist today and got my wife's pronghorn euro already and got my formed picked out for my shoulder mount
He has a couple awesome sandhill cranes in there that looked great. Hoping to drop a few of those this year.
As far as froze you should be fine. I know on Ducks and geese it is good to wrap the bill and feet in wet paper towel before you put them in the freezer. I think for coyote you are good to go, maybe the nose is the only potential area, but I'm really not sure.
