When shooting for fun I always used the cheap military surplus. Now I will be shooting for precision at 200 yds with a CR6724 (24 in ss bull barrel). I was interested in saving money before but now Im interested in being good.....

Which 223 ammo is considered premiere? I never bothered to learn about good 223 ammo so I am clueless..... (Use CCI for 22lr)

Will be shooting 200 yds both prone and bench.

All input is appreciated as I am a novice in good 223 ammo.

Thanks in advance for your input

Every barrel will be slightly different. Buy some premium ammo and get some rounds down range on target.

It is less about the money you spend and more about experimenting with various bullet weights and manufacturers. This of course presumes you do not reload. You will have to try individual retail loadings as the reality is your rifle might in fact like the "cheaper" brand vs the premium.

55 grain btfmj has no problem hitting 200 consistently. Loading your own will shrink that group up very nicely. Which bullet, powder, charge and barrel, that's the unknown. As others mentioned, find what factory man gets the best results and go from there.

Depends on how precise your precision shooting is going to be. If you truly want the smallest groups possible you probably aren't going to find factory ammo that can meet the performance of a carefully worked up hand load.

What specifically is your goal? Sub MOA groups? Or ringing a 6" gong?

If you check your twist even though it is listed as a 1:9 you will find your twist is closer to a 1:8.5. The 6724 and the Federal Gold Metal Match 69 grain bullets were meant for each other.

How much can I expect to lower the price per round by reloading?

Depends on a few things. I suggest an AUS / local reloading site for this info. What we pay and have available here might be different compared to prices over there.
I'm averaging a 40% savings over factory. Right now for generic ammo, it's cheaper to buy from on line. That doesn't mean the accuracy is the same out of your 20" bbl as the 16" one.

BUT... I can work up loads for rifles to wring out as much accuracy & performance as i can. The person behind the trigger is the unknown.

I am a Service Rifle high power shooter, 200, 300 and 600 yards bullseye out of a 20 inch AR-15......... Have to reload...... once fired LAKE CITY brass, prepped and trimmed, 77 gr Sierra Match Kings for 200-300 yards........Bought in 500 bullet boxes, your bullet will cost .25 cents, 3 cents for primer and 10 cents for powder (Varget or other suitable 5.56/223 powders....... So buy quality factory ammo for .80 cents-$1.00 a round or reload for .40 cents a round.

Have fun, the AR is a very accurate rifle, properly fed!!!!
