I'm shocked. And skeptical. And a tiny bit hopeful.

He says a lot of really good things, but we cannot just ignore his anti-gun past (And the fact that he's Trump). I think it would be hard for any of us to disagree with what he says here... but that's exactly why I'm skeptical. It sounds like he has all the right words, but we have yet to see all the right moves. Don't forget that Obama also said all the right things to rally the people.

A few excerpts:

...Here’s another important way to fight crime – empower law-abiding gun owners to defend themselves. Law enforcement is great, they do a tremendous job, but they can’t be everywhere all of the time. Our personal protection is ultimately up to us. That’s why I’m a gun owner, that’s why I have a concealed carry permit, and that’s why tens of millions of Americans have concealed carry permits as well. It’s just common sense. To make America great again, we’re going to go after criminals and put the law back on the side of the law-abiding.

GUN AND MAGAZINE BANS. Gun and magazine bans are a total failure. That’s been proven every time it’s been tried. Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like “assault weapons”, “military-style weapons” and “high capacity magazines” to confuse people. What they’re really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans. Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own.

BACKGROUND CHECKS. There has been a national background check system in place since 1998. Every time a person buys a gun from a federally licensed gun dealer – which is the overwhelming majority of all gun purchases – they go through a federal background check. Study after study has shown that very few criminals are stupid enough to try and pass a background check – they get their guns from friends/family members or by stealing them. So the overwhelming majority of people who go through background checks are law-abiding gun owners. When the system was created, gun owners were promised that it would be instant, accurate and fair. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case today. Too many states are failing to put criminal and mental health records into the system – and it should go without saying that a system’s only going to be as effective as the records that are put into it. What we need to do is fix the system we have and make it work as intended. What we don’t need to do is expand a broken system.

His words on the subject are encouraging; let's hope he means it.

I don't agree with everything he says he stands for, but I like his apparent open & honest way of speaking, like a businessman, not like a deceptive politician.

Let's see where this goes. Frankly, I'm liking him more & more every day.

This one is pretty good too:

MILITARY BASES AND RECRUITING CENTERS. Banning our military from carrying firearms on bases and at recruiting centers is ridiculous. We train our military how to safely and responsibly use firearms, but our current policies leave them defenseless. To make America great again, we need a strong military. To have a strong military, we need to allow them to defend themselves.

That didn't last long. Trump agrees with Schumer: No fly, no buy. No more innocent until proven guilty. All you have to be is "An enemy of the state" (definition? Who decides?) and you can be denied a constitutional right:

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/11/robert-farago/donald-trump-nist-watch-list/

If we have an enemy of state, I don’t want to give him anything. I want to have him in jail, that’s what I want. I want to have him in jail. But if those people in Paris had guns in that room, it would have been a shootout and very few people would have been hurt by comparison to the number that were hurt . . .

If somebody is on a watch list and an enemy of state and we know it’s an enemy of state. I would keep them [guns] away, absolutely.

A sound piece of advise for anyone running for public office... IMHO. [Beer]

Can anyone name a politician, who has actually kept his word after being elected?

I saw highlights of one his speeches last week about the 2nd. All I saw was someone that learned a new buzzword. "Guns, guns, guns". "Guns for everyone". I don't believe a word he is saying. He may not have an extensive political career like the other candidates but its clear he knows how the game is played.

I know that Budd Dwyer did the right thing once he let everyone down.

Given his past statements favoring gun control only 7-8 years ago, Trump's canned 2A statement makes me believe he is pro-2A only for political appeal, and if in his wisdom he felt it was then needed to further restrict legal gun ownership for the purpose of making America great, he would do it. Trump is less about left and right as he is about firmly believing that if he wins the election, then he will be master of the situation. That gives me pause for concern about his true commitment to values over what is perceived to be what is needed to "win."

Do we know if his buildings are sill gun free zones? If they still are, that would tell us his true feelings on the matter...

I'd be more excited with this policy paper if I thought it meant anything. He's a huckster and will say anything to get elected (even so he'd be better than Hitlery and I'll vote for him if he's the candidate) I just don't trust him to actually do any of these wonderful things once he's in office ... other than maybe become more protectionist with our trade policy (no, not a good thing) and at the very least he'll stand up for America when insulted (instead of doing the insulting).

Obama. He promised to "fundamentally transform" America ... he's doing a hell of a job as I barely recognize the old place.
