2000 Pontiac Grand Prix....

ABS light constant on
Trac control light constant on (switch for traction control does not cycle it off)
And my steering feels noticeably different like the power steering is not functioning properly.

Have not pulled any codes yet as this is a brand new issue.

15 year old GM. Have you changed the belts? Changed the power steering and brake fluids?

It could be electrical, but cleaning and servicing the steering and brake systems would be a good first start, IMO.

Sounds like the radial thermister needs some new strut fluid. [Dunno]

This is where I would start. Sounds like a brake problem to me. No grinding or squeeling in the front end?

Apples to oranges as far as vehicles go, but my ABS and Brake lights were coming on periodically on my Chevy Suburban. Turned out to be a ground issue. I just had to clean up the attachment on the block.

I suppose my first stop should be the fuses.

abs wheel sensor.Yep, controls the abs and traction control.
chAs far as the power steering concern check the fluid-low you have a leak in the system- lines rack or pump.
If dirty and burnt smelling you might be able to get away with a P.S. flush if not needs a pump.

Oh and out of car diag will cost $95 an hr...[Coffee]

I think I have my feeler gauges around here somewhere...

ABS should be on a breaker, not a fuse.

Buy yourself a workshop manual for your car and find out the specific error codes. The manual should walk you through diagnostics steps with those codes.

I seem to recall an issue with the harness / connector for the wheel speed sensors on these cars?

I believe ABS requires a special ABS code reader like a snap on or some other expensive reader. Maybe somebody here or a auto parts store will read the codes for you. I had a problem with my Colorado and had a shop read it for $20. It was a broken wire in the extended cab door, setting off airbag code. I found this out via a car forum.

Yeah, if your car is hydra boost, sure sounds like it's low on fluid. Any stains on the ground, audible noises when you steer or use the brakes? Pedal feel lower or spongier then normal?

Also for those who know how to set points. Dwell effects timing. Timing doesn't effect dwell.

Always clean , then put a light film of white grease on the brake drum adjusters and backing plate

abs wheel sensor.

^^^ this.

With a GM tech scanner you can tell if it's driver side or passenger side. A normal simple OBD scanner can't read the ABS sensors.

Definitely will cause the abs and traction control issue, and some grand prix's have Magnasteer, which adjusts the sensitivity of the power steering based on wheel speed, and defaults to low sensitivity if an ABS sensor fails.

If you get lucky and find broken wires on the ABS you might just be able to fix the wire, but usually it's replacing the wheel bearing.

I had a bad ABS sensor on the front driver side. Every once in a while I would get the ABS light. Had a recall at the dealer and told them I would not let them do the recall unless they got me an ABS code for free. The code said bad ABS wheel sensor. As above I changed the whole wheel bearing with the sensor, as the manual stated the the sensor was very delicate and had to be installed with special GM tools. Wheel bearing "hub" with sensor was about $150 from rockauto.com Dealer wanted $700 for the hub repair. Only sensible way to approach this problem is get the code from a reader. If you get in a skid situation while driving a faulty ABS system, you could lose control of the vehicle and suffer serious injury or death. My truck used to pull to the right when coming to an abrupt stop. Since the repair it stays straight. Reminds me of that song "Jesus take the wheel"...

Are they a coincidence or did some one bang a curb hard enough to really mover something around. As in bent. Could be when your TC goes out it may pull power assist if your car has veriable assist power steering. Holy smokes this makes me think I need code reader.

I'm off tomorrow for the most part if you need a swing by and read . I'm in cap hill so not too far away . as in I can come to you .. no room here anyways

A good cleaning (if possible) of that sensor might fix it. If not, time for replacement

Raybestos rear bearing hub with sensor $73 at rockauto.com...check the wires from the sensor to the ABS controller for damage/continuity. Looks like a sealed unit from the photo on rockauto, so I don't know if you can clean it. Google for discount code for rockauto save 5%
