So I've got a car up for sale on CL. http://cosprings.craigslist.org/cto/5212925706.html

Got an email from an interested person today who actually asked some reasonable questions (other then "is the item still for sale") among the questions is "do you have a car history report you can send me". So I sent him the VIN and told him he could run a Carfax or AutoCheck himself. He replied back that his lender wanted me to use a site called lookupvinpro.com instead ... when you get there it wants you to spend $20 for the report.

So I googled lookupvinpro.com and found that it is indeed a scam. http://scam-detector.com/auto-scams/car-history-report-scam

Really ... people have nothing better to do than rip people off ... sheesh.

I will pay you your asking price plus $ for the shipping. My agent will come by after you deposit the check to pick up the item and you can pay him the shipping charge with the extra.

You will be out your item, PLUS the money they stole directly from you.

That's a lot better better than most scams.
Did you tell him to look it up himself, and to send you his bank account info so you can transfer funds to reimburse him.

I had that same experience when I tried to sell my wife's car. The exchange went like this:

Them: "Hey, I saw your car for sale. I always run a check on the VIN before I sell a car. You should really try XXXXX.com, it's half the price of Carfax! Here is the link: "

My reply was this: If you want to run the VIN, I'll send it to you, knock yourself out.

Never heard back from him.
