I'll whine about it. I was on I25 on this Sunday driving my son to his mothers house when someone did this. I couldn't see the car in front of me or to my sides for several seconds. Actually being a few cars back from the truck I'm sure I didn't cause the drivers angst. If you trying to be cool causes risk to my safety or that of my son I've been officially pissed off. Absolute douchebaggerry.

Add me to the list of whiners. I'm one of the least confrontational people you'll meet, but if me and my family (2 year old and 1 year old) were in the position of the Tacoma in that video, with our windows down enjoying the nice weather, and that dbag fills my cabin full of smoke, we are exchanging words.

It's based off the trucks programmer - they can easily turn it off and on. Basically they switch it to a mode that dumps tons of fuel, but low boost making the black cloud.

This is a truck version of a sport bike rider. You have sport bike riders who enjoy the speed safely or even the different riding position, but then you have the "crotch rocket" rider who hauls ass and ruins it for the rest of us. I had to go 2 under the speed limit when I was on my sport bike because officers pre-judge riders because of what they are one. In this instance, I would love to own a beefed up diesel but would get put into the d-bag category because I look like one of them. People will always have opinions of things, and it only takes 1 d-bag to screw it all up for everyone.

Sorry for those of you who have been smoked out - that is not very kind of those d-bag drivers. They need to keep that to their club and do it away from people who do not like it.

p.s. Its "rolling coal" not the other way around ;)

Dosnt bother me any. I don't see a reason to go out of ones way to do it like some are , and agree there is some D-bagish behavior.

I love diesels , I don't own one but hope to some day just couldn't justify a truck that big. I was at IKEA one day in the underground parking and there was a F250 goofing around and I was laughing my ass off. But I'd hate to see the list of things that make people feel "vulnerable" geesh. Let them pass laws against it , it should only affect the dbags doing it right ?

I wish some of the dumbasses riding bikes on narrow mountain roads would realize how small and weak they are as a person traveling at a slow rate of speed with no protective encasement around them.

I have a duramax and the only time it even puts out black smoke is under load and full throttle. Even then, its not enough to be "rolling coal". However, I dont really care about it. As stated above, just a waste of fuel and draws unnecessary attention to yourself.

I do notice that it seems to be Dodge's that do it more. They adjust the lift pump and voila, rolling coal. I also think Dodge drivers are the ricers of the diesel world. Tow mirrors out with no trailer...

Modern diesels with diesel particulate filters ( DPF's) don't smoke like that. That started in 2007. Now most diesel trucks also take Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). I believe it's also federally mandated that all diesel engines having more than 25HP must have a DPF, and all Diesel engines over 75HP as of 2016 model year require DEF. this also includes all construction and farm equipment.

New emissions requirements for late model vehicles will basically sort the 'problem' out. DPFs and DEF requirements are in place at this point.

Oh, and if you drive with your tow mirrors flipped with no trailer, go fuck yourself. If you put wheels that are chrome and 20" plus on your truck, same story.

These same asshats will cry when the dot hits them for emissions.

They used to call Cummins motors "ragburners". Even with no programmer, my pump just loves to dump fuel, so I'm pretty absurdly smokey any time I'm under load. I'm talking 19th century locomotive style smoke. Yet I fly through emissions.

Holy wow, the just flat wrong information in this thread is staggering...

To say that dbags prefer Dodge over the others is like saying that dbags prefer AR-15's over FAL's... The simple fact of the matter is that Dodge has/had the better midsize truck diesel engine and sold LOTS of them. Trying to say the current Cummins is better than the current Duramax or current Powerstroke is a matter of opinion. They have all had their generations of motors that sucked more than others.

There are two different types of tuners out there. There are box tuners, which 99% of people with a diesel will use, and then there are the custom tuners (available for certain years, and models etc). Unfortunately, the box tuners (Bullydog, Smarty, H&S, Edge, etc) are a "one-size-fits-all" solution, so their tunes are conservative to prevent engine damage due to tolerance ranges in each motor. This means they primarily use more fuel to build more power (instead of balancing a little more fuel with timing, increased air, and other factors). This means the truck is going to smoke more, but it will usually result in better fuel economy than the truck had stock.

I have a 6.7l cummins, that currently is runnning 525/1019 HP/TQ at the rear wheels, and it gets significantly better mileage than when it was the factory 350/600 at the crank. The better mileage comes as a side product of using a tuner to increase the power. Properly tuning the motor, and making it more efficient means more power, and better economy (to a point - At some level, the production of more power requires more fuel, which means that economy might suffer). In it's current state, I have gotten 26MPG out of the truck when running unloaded on the highway (hand calculated, not the lie-o-meter in the truck).

The DPF and DEF systems are only there to give greenie-hippie-homos a warm fuzzy by eliminating the seen soot of a diesel. They don't get all wound up that a gasoline engine actually produces more harmful emissions than a diesel, because they can't see it...

Yup, 2004.5 when they started rolling out the 325/555 H.O. version. I dug through a bunch of official EFI Live posts and updates, and apparently they'd tried to tackle the project, but the ECM's architecture is too difficult for their tech team. Shame, considering Smarty and every other box tuner could write software & ROMs for it. They basically said it wasn't financially viable to spend anymore time on the 04s and 05s, which I find very hard to believe.

Official 2004.5 mid model year trucks are 325/610 in stock factory form. I own one and that's what's on the sticker.

if you have an 06 or early 07 they have EFI live for them, but nothing prior to that. I am bummed about that since my truck is an 05 5.9.

I'm thinking of doing the EFI. I have a 06 5.9 and am running a Smarty S-06 now. I'm an old fart and hate rolling coal but that Smarty is a little dirty at times. Usually when I have been running with no load for a while then have to step on it to pass someone.

I believe early 2004 H.O. Option was 325/555.

Time to do some VIN referencing and double check a few odds and ends. Cheers!

I've been behind a few of them up here. They really need to be off the road for creating a huge hazard. The video on the news link doesn't do it justice; the trucks blow so much effing smoke that I could see only about 2 feet in front of me for at least 30-50 feet (me in my car).

Yeah they should always roll coal when in front of a police car. See how well that works out for them.

Several years ago, a young lad in an older 12V spewed so much out I had half-burned diesel spots all over the front of my brand new Audi. Luckily I never saw the truck/kid again.

You guys realize that this sounds just like the whiney bitch liberals that post in forums about guns right? "They are such a hazard." "I don't feel safe knowing there are so many guns around me." "I'm concerned for the safety of my children." The same argument could be made for those annoying ass Harleys that ride around town at full throttle with straight pipes. I bet the majority of the guys posting in here like, own, or have owned Harleys.

Those annoy me way more than some diesels rolling coal. In my opinion; however, the guys that insist on blowing coal need to run a stack setup to keep it away from cars around them. Route the exhaust up like semis. That loses the appeal to a lot of these guys though. Just marvels me that the freedom to chose only applies until someone does something that you don't agree with, like the tow mirrors out thing. To act like you know what type of work that guy does with his truck in the first place shows what an ignorant person you are. Even if you do know, to actually get upset about that shows what a pathetic waste of effort you are putting into judging someone else for THEIR truck.

Yep, lots of puss-i-tis going on in here. If you couldn't see you were obviously following too close. If you know about Rolling coal then don't sit next to their exhaust, it's like a blind spot, you learn to not drive in people's blind spot, well don't drive in their exhaust pipe area either.

does it suck to get rolled, yep, but I find it hilarious anyways, and a bunch of Whining just makes me want to get an old Cummins and do it more.

Do people that roll coal wave when they pass each other like motorcycle riders?

I'm going to start a new trend myself. I call it 'Log Rolling'. It's when you wait for people to leave for work, then you shit on their porch. I find it hilarious!

And on an unrelated note, hey Sniper! When do you leave for work?:)

Most of the time it is not an issue and it doesn't bother me. But when they cloud an area so much that it cause a hazard because other drivers cannot see it is a problem.

Oh come on, now you are just whining! Don't you know, it's YOUR job to ensure you aren't in proximity to the truck? After all, he's just having a little fun, and using complete strangers as the subject.

I think they blow an "O" unless a Prius is around then they try to cover it in soot

I didn't realize we had some many on here that want to control others actions and their property because they don't "like" something about it...sounds like another group that I assumed most on here disliked as well. And now because you dislike that group, you want to do mean things to them to show your disdain...like how an liberal might key a vehicle with a pro gun sticker on it. Yep....I see that connection now.

Breaking laws because your feelers got hurt...sounds really smart!

I wouldn't say it's because I don't like it. When I'm on the highway going 70 and suddenly I cant see for a few seconds that's a big deal to me. Not wanting someone to risk my life is reasonable. Driving a car is in reality the most dangerous thing most of us will ever do.

JohnnyEgo

Out of curiosity, would "doing mean things to them to show your disdain" include such things as seeing "a Prius is around and then they try to cover it in soot?"

My basic thought is this: People do mean things to people all the time, and that is life. However, when you arbitrarily smoke out a guy towing a kid on his bicycle, then we as a society have a collective duty to find your mother and kick her in the ovaries as hard as possible for raising such an inconsiderate douchebag of a son.

And by 'you', I don't mean 'you, Sniper', as I am sure you would never express your disdain to a group you didn't like by blowing a diesel cloud at their children.

Edit: A quick internet search did not reveal any particular law that would prevent me from Log Rolling you. I couldn't shit on your porch directly, because that might involve public defecation or exposure. However, there does not appear to be anything stopping me from bringing a giant log from my own toilet and placing it on your doorstep when your not home. Doesn't appear to be trespassing, maybe vandalism or littering, but the law does not seem to anticipate that I would do something pointlessly annoying with my feces to a stranger for my own amusement. Sort of like how it's probably a stretch to make a crime out of 'Rolling Coal', but it's still a douchy thing to do to a stranger.

This thread is a bit of a cluster. The people defending this action seem to have a huge blind spot in their understanding of that which the others are complaining. No one is complaining that there are diesel trucks that emit smoke, no one. People are complaining that owners of the diesel trucks are purposely, and even proudly, blowing smoke on random people in public. If you do that, you're an asshole, period. There is zero defense and zero justification.

This entire argument could be changed to people running around on the street and belching in other people's faces. The defenders would provide arguments like, "How do you do know he didn't just finish a soda?" or, "Funny that you just assume he doesn't have a disorder that affects his digestive tract!" Maybe, "So if I just had a large coke and a spicy burrito, I shouldn't be allowed on the streets?"

Of course no one would be, or has been making those arguments. Only that if you purposely make an effort to belch in someone else's face, you're an asshole.

Wow! This state is more like California than I thought. My wife told me about a very similar law while we were visiting Cali earlier in the year, and I about freaked.

I was pulled over in Boulder maybe 10-12 years ago for a smoking vehicle. No ticket though.

I'm probably a hypocrite but keying a vehicle would be vandalism and illegal, my exhaust is not.

as a disclaimer, I don't own a coal roller, my brand new duramax is all stock and I intend to keep it that way since I'll buy another one next year, and then another one the year after that and so on. Upgrades are a waste of money for me and I don't want to void my warranty.

And I don't care if they roll coal or not. It sure isn't hard to pick those trucks out, it's not like they hide the fact they are big diesels with upgrade stickers on them, huge exhausts, loud turbos, etc. and that makes them easy to avoid.p if you actually pay attention while driving.

Anyone wanting on my property would be trespassing, once they hopped the marked fence. They wouldn't be getting through the locked gate without permission, so I don't have any worry for log rolling. But if playing with your own shit gets you off, you probably need a mental health check for Scatolia. And by "you" I don't be you JohnnyEgo, as I'm sure you would never really handle your own feces, let alone dig it out of the toilet, drive it over 30 miles with the intention of depositing it on somebody's doorstep, as that might be a sign in the eyes of the law of a mentally disturbed individual.
