I've got a pup (about 6 years old), overall doing good, but has had a nagging cough for about a year now. It perfectly fits the standard description of kennel cough.

Current vet has given him 2 rounds of antibiotics, and is now trying some oral steriods. They don't seem to really have a clue, and I'm thinking I might need to try a different vent.

We've got 2 other dogs, and the older one (about 15 year old black lab mix) also has some cough, but the vet has pretty much just dismissed it as an old-age thing.

During the 2nd round of antibiotics, for the first 8 days of the 10 day treatment, the cough was completely gone. Then around day 9 it came back a little. My non-medical background logic is thinking that maybe it is bacterial, but the other dog keeps re-exposing him to it so it comes back. Can't get the doc to consider doing a round of antibiotics for both of them at the same time.

Any thoughts, suggestions or references appreciated.

MERCKS Veterinary manual, just as reference & help is something everyone should have, or have access to.
AS for a vet in your area, no help, sorry

I'd definitely get a second opinion.

I don't have any recommendations for you if you're in the Littleton that's near Old Town Littleton and Sata Fe; I'm not familiar with that area and the businesses there.

If you are in the Unincorporated-Douglas-County Littleton/HR/Park Meadows area, there are several fairly decent vets in the area that would be able to render a second opinion. Let me know and if you're over in the 'other' Littleton closer to I-25, I'll dig a bit and see what I can find out.

Alameda East, they have specialist in different fields of medicine. My dog had intestinal issues, and they have specialists in that area. I also know they have respiratory specialists as well. We always joked that our dog was going to the Mayo Clinic for dogs. Top notch facility, so not the cheapest, but they're worth it.

I went though a handful of crappy vets before I found this place. Reasonable and Dr Beckstrom is a sharp guy.

I'm taking penicillin meant for fish in aquariums, for a sinus infection. VA makes obtaining treatment very difficult. Local military treatment means a long wait in the ER. I just buy the stuff from ebay. I can get the antibiotic from the military but a 100 mile round trip and a 6 hour wait is ridiculous. I did learn from a VA doctor what drug works the best with the least side effects. We do treat our animals ourselves, but usually get the drugs from the vet. Kazoo is right, a good reference like Mercks can help alot. Different meds for for different bacterial infections. Just my opinion...

Ty for the info... current steroid treatment doesn't seem to be helping at all. I'll look into the vets mentioned here.
