I am looking for a range where I can stretch it out. I have been to Pawnee a few times, it's great out there but I would like to find a place that has a 1k yard range like CO rifle club but open to the public. Any ideas?

A 1k range that any yokel can use? Only one I know of is the NRA's Whittington Center down by Raton NM. I'd be kinda wary about a 1k range for public use that wasn't monitored, you're liable to get incoming rounds while you're downrange.

My club keeps making noises about putting one in, but the big $$$$$$ estimates shoot it down.

You'll likely have to join a range or start shooting matches at CRC or other places that hold them.

Be familiar with the rules for Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex.

Long Rules: The range is 'open to the public' and will be open 6 days a week. The complex consists of 7 independent ranges with over 110 individual covered firing points. Set and check targets will be available out to 300 yards. There will be over 50 pistol positions with targets between 5-50 yards. Long distance shooters will enjoy 'report' targets out to over 800 yards (no .50 calibers will be permitted other than muzzleloaders). There will be a small archery and a 5-Stand trap range for the shotgun enthusiast, coming soon!
Fee's range between $8-$10 per visit. Discounts will be available for youth and frequent shooters. A small retail shop is on the property for basic range needs. All of the proceeds generated from the Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex will go directly to support the Soldiers and Families of Fort Carson.
El Paso County, the El Paso County Sheriff, Colorado Department of Parks & Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service are our partners and great supporters of the Complex. The El Paso County Sheriff will occupy one of the ranges Monday-Friday to train hundreds of deputies and other law enforcement agencies.
Safety First.....Fun Second. Safety will be our primary concern during your visit to the range. Our trained staff will ensure that all of our strict safety policies and rules are adhered to with no exceptions. Our goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for you and your family. Formal firearms training and instruction will be available in the near future.
A special thank you is in order to our friends at the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife, because of a generous grant they provided, the CMSC was able to make significant improvements to the Range. Thanks Team!

Why not just join out at CRC. It $60 a year and is very well kept and usually quiet. During the week and thru most of the winter you will usually find yourself to be the only person out there.

After 2 range finders were used, It's more like 300. Other than that not bad, outside getting the prairie goats to move.

I believe you are wrong as it pertains to the ops question. The item quote below is from the range complex on their facebook page dated August 21 pf this year. Take special note of the part I bolded.

Shooters!!!! Great news for all you 300 magnum and .338 magnum shooters, we've been granted clearance to fire these caliber rifles at the CMSC. At this point, we'll allow you to shoot up to 100 yards on paper. By next Friday, 28 August, we'll have the 300 yard target line ready. Please do NOT ask if you can shoot the steel targets past 300 as this will never be allowed!

I'm dumb, but why would you not be able to shoot longer range steel targets, but closer is fine? I'd think further out if anything might increase deflection to better richochet into dirt if anything.

I believe that it's because your shooting up towards the crest of a hill and there is a military helicopter pad on the other side

Seems like the best solution unless you only want to do it once or twice.

This thread is useful to me. Thanks all, for your input. I was very close to joining CRC when work took me out of town again. Next spring/summer for sure, as it's well worth the $60 to know I have a long outdoor range to shoot when I am in town, a variety of events, and forum members to eventually meet and shoot with.

Apologies for bringing a dead thread back to life, but I just want to make sure I understand what's available. I signed up for a PRS event in a few months and need to find a place to practice long range steel.

* The Pawnee Sportsmen's Center has steel out to 1000y and a really low membership cost, but it's almost impossible to spot misses and they're only open a few hours a week.
* CRC has steel out to 500m and paper out to 1000y. Membership is a bit higher and they don't allow open carry or concealed carry.
* Cheyenne Mountain is $10 civilian, or less if you buy a punch pass, but only has steel out to 300y and is also anti-carry.

Did I miss anything?

This doesn't seem promising. Maybe I can find a good valley on BLM land where I won't bother anyone.

I open and conceal carry at CRC all the time. Every time, in fact. Are you sure you're not mistaking cold range rules for no carry rules?

also Cheyenne is open carry ok. No conceal carry because it is on Fed land (Ft Carson base). Also no holster drawing.

It doesn't say that the short hours are only for the general public. It does say that in order to gain access outside of public hours, you must become a range officer. Maybe the website is wrong?

It says "Wearing handguns in holsters is PROHIBITED on CRC property."

CRC has steel on the High power range, a 10 and a 18" AR500 gong on the right side. You may have to co-ordinate with others there, I think I have only had to twice.

Ah, that might be promising after all. Thanks! Too bad the web site doesn't have that info.

If it is sunrise to sunset for all members, that may be the ticket. It's closer to me and membership is very reasonably priced.
