So on my honeymoon, had a kinda odd circumstance that had me creeped enough to pop the safety off my shield.

If anyone knows Glenwood Springs, was at The Pullman for dinner. (hoyty toity pompous but amazing.) Walking back we'd parked kinda further east at the end of a long line of vehicles on an unlit street. Apartments on one side, other side a hill that quickly drops off with bushes. (Bad visibility). Wasn't thrilled but was only parking in a reasonable distance.

So coming back, she's busy trying to grab my arm and be all romantic and shit. I was already watching at the start of the street 3 guys that looked either decent dressed homeless or possibly just some bar crowd sobering up a bit. Pass them on the far sidewalk without a problem. As we are nearing the truck were crossing street at a soft angle, and I hear a brush snap. I didnt see anything to my side, but up ahead a kinda hoopty older white minivan is the last vehicle before a ways further the truck. What should I see (not super clearly) was a person, seemed like a little hispanic dude maybe? But he was laying down like high crawl style over the edge of the hill besides this van. All I could see was head/shoulders. Looked like either watching street in front of van or even stuff on otherside from underneath van.

Suffice to say I was making frequent checks over the shoulder and had my hand in my pocket with shield I had clicked off safe. Kinda pissed me off that initially when I told her theres some creep laying in the grass besides the van she didnt really get it. She at least started to get it as we got in car as she beat me to locking the doors. Couldnt see them with lights on, but I had her look as we crawled past and she saw them. Finally started to understand that's not right/creep vibe. Was going to let one of the 1-2 cops we'd seen a lot of earlier but didnt run into any before we were hitting the main fast road back to hotel.

Was nice in the aftermath as she I think is finally starting to understand why I like taking certain seats and am usually paying attention when we walking at night. And really dont like her dragging on my right arm.

Great that nothing happened.

Did you wish you had a small/high-lumen flashlight with you?

Biggest thing was geography limited my view, still light enough to see. I kinda wish I knew what was going on, I think if it was hinky, that me being alert and 2 of us worked well vs if it was her wondering around alone. My it was probably nothing story was they were waiting to spook a friend or something stupid.

I used to have a nice little tac light, but it got lost/stolen at work a while back and hadn't replaced yet. Honestly even if I had it, I wasn't in the habit of using it except at work, but usually I'm not out where I'm running around dimly lit areas.

Sounds like it could have been bad news... Glad you avoided it. My wife and kiddos understand that my right hand is always free for a good reason. Consequently, I think my left arm is beefier from always carrying things in my left hand... [LOL]

Forgot to ask: Had either of you been drinking? When Mrs. HB drinks, her SA goes to ZERO pretty quickly.

Nope no drinks though I'd been wishing a red with her steak and a ultra crisp dry white woulda been great with my salmon. Usually skip as most places food/drink isn't good enough to bother.

What kind/type of light are you guys using?

Glad nothing happened, but you need to work on your presentation / technique, never disengage the the safety until you have cleared leather/pocket and are on target.
Otherwise you may end up shooting yourself or, good or bad, your wife.

All's well that ends well I suppose.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's wife walks around oblivious to the world around her.

Guess that's why they have men to protect them.

While I could use more practice drawing with the shield. My train of thinking is I'm almost entirely versed on safety-less guns. A draw no matter what I'm pretty solid on trigger fingering not actually being anywhere near it until actual pull the trigger time. In this case I had my hand on it, indexed on the slide the whole time. One of the things that makes me a little nervous on pocket shield is the sights are pretty sharp and depending on what I'm wearing kinda prone to catching I bet. Need to find a good IWB for it.

Carrying the shield with the safety disengaged really isn't any different than carrying a shield that doesn't have the manual safety.

When I have suggested to my wife that she consider getting a CCW, her response is; "I married you. You carry a gun. You can protect me." 26 years have not really moved her off that position. I guess at some point she put her foot down and counted to ten, so that is all she is saying about that. [Flower]

Safety 99% of time, 1% r2g when actually in alert/spidey sense time?

I wanted her to ccw, but I've since learned from other situations not even with a bad guy, but other semi quick panic/react type things it's going to be pointless. One of those freeze and gawk types.

Had this conversation again with my wife during our after dinner walk this evening. She didn't even see the guy on the bicycle, stopped in the shadow across the street, yakking on his cell phone. By the end of the walk, she was much better at picking stuff out.

Glad the OP's situation turned out ok...and that he was ready in case it didn't.

On the bright side, I suppose he could use her as a human shield if things ever did go south.

(Please don't tell her I said that. If I ever have the pleasure of meeting her I don't want her giving me the evil eye.)

Glad it turned out well for you.

If I ever spot something odd I always tell my wife what is going on and she will move one step behind me and watch my back. Her overall SA is not so good unless alerted but she knows the basics when she is out alone.

Glad there was no issue.

My wife and and I went for dinner and a late movie on the 16th Street Mall. As many of you have experienced, the "timbre" of the mall changes pretty quick the later it gets, especially after midnight. During our walk back at about ~1:00 am, we saw many of the normal and generally harmless vagrants. However, near the construction site where the old Dave Cooks used to be, there were three urban yutes standing with their backs to the wall, just surveying everybody who walked buy. Not very often does the hair literally stand-up on the back of my beck, but the vibe from this small group was about as negative and hostile as you can get, and here we were as the 30-something white couple. As we passed, my hand went into my pocket and I had a firm grasp on my carry piece, becoming quite the swivel head for the remainder of the walk to the car (down by the Wazee Supper Club). Later, we found out there was a shooting about 30 minutes after we left the area at the north end of Larimer Square.

Trust your instincts!

Some times being armed will give you an air of self confidence, and that alone will prevent an attack.

IMO if you felt there was a possible threat. You should have walked away and notified local LE. Flight is ALWAYS option 1, if possible.

Usually other stuff, but I love being told like an idiot, No Shit Sherlock level stuff, wtf do you think I'm looking at etc. (Usually happens driving)
