Went to the South Site Sunday for some fun with my son & friend. My, how the place is begining to look like Rampart so quickly. We filled the back of my Durango with trash, pallets, glass, dvd players, plastic, bowling pins, etc. There was even a large metal stand welded with horse shoes which I could not take with. [Rant1]

I say tell no one where the South Site is located, of course unless they are on the CO-Ar15 group. We were checking out @ wallyworld with some clays and the lady asked where we were going shooting since Rampart was closed.... I said "somewhere, maybe the mountains."

I was there this morning and it looked good. The horsehoe thing? I thought that was a gun rack! Sure worked as one. I set it up next to my shooting mat.

Thanks for the cleanup.

I draged that from the berm and used it as the same thing. I guess we just followed a group from Saturday that trashed it. I played a game with my son " who can pick up the most shotgun shells"

It was up there Saturday as well. I didnt have room for it after hauling the microwave, TV, Car battery, Election Campaign signs and other garbage. I sure hope it doesnt turn into Rampart.

I have a question on the clay's. Do those things dissolve after time. It really pisses me off all the shotgun shells people leave out there. I guess people assume that its ok because somebody will just come along and clean it later.

The clays are mostly limestone (dolemite) which is not toxic. It does reduce soil alkalinity which might be good or bad depending on the soil and vegetation. Pines like acidic soil for example. The paint is water soluble and the black is pitch which is probably the worst component but tests have shown it not to be a serious source of aquatic toxicity.

Another words the clays are no big deal.

The plastic wads are another matter entirely. I reload 12 ga. slug and I always get my hulls AND wads. Shotgunners are the biggest slobs if I may generalize after 250 trips to a public range in the last 2 years.

are you all talking about the same location as the accidental death recently? I thought that site was closed down? (or was it only temporarily?)

No sir.

Rampart Range was closed down July 21 after the negligent shooting which led to a death. Rampart was a real range with benches and stands for spotting scopes and a dedicated shotgun area.

The south site has no benches, coverings, or anything and the general area also has primitive camping sites.

It is the simple rule of the mountains - pack out what you pack in - " leaving something for the next guy to shoot" is the lazy mans cop-out. If it keeps up like this it'll look like west virginia around here in no time.[Help]

Amen brother! I don't use either of the two "official" sites, I have a couple dozen that I use around the mountains and spend the whole next morning after camping just cleaning up other peoples crap and building the firepit to be safer. These jackasses that leave their crap around is disgusting but the pinhead that leave their casings and hulls are real asswipes because then other folks automatically label shooters as polluting the mountains.

I won't take much for the tree huggers to close a really nice spot. Frankly, not being much of a tree hugger, I agree with them - if people can't shoot responsibly then the site shouldn't be used as a range. I've been considering taking my Bronco up to the fall river area and cleaning up some campsites (they have already closed half of it because of dipshits leaving their garbage).

Went to the south site this mornin'. It looked very clean.

I picked up some MDF boards "left behind for so someone can shoot them" [Shake] and less than a half a bag of trash consisting mostly of wads, hulls, and unpoliced steel cases. There was one massive slab of particle board about 1" thick and about 2' x 4' that I left till someone breaks it into more manageable sized chunks.

I measured off and fluorescent painted 20 yd. lines out to 100 yds. as well as a 25m (82ft) compass. These were for my own use and are not obtrusive.

No one else came to shoot but a couple of vehicles went on up 343.

And since it was so desolate I went and shot at 200 and then 250 yds. btw the sign for 343 that is just up the fork where the road goes off over the hill, is almost exactly 250 yds. to the berm farthest from the highway. You can't shoot from the sign if there is anyone else around. [Tooth]

I did not drive up 343...does anyone know if there are longer distance ranges further back? my 7.62x54r is still punching through my mild 1/2" steel plates[Mad]

I mostly went to shoot my NM M14 that I received as a gift a few weeks ago. It shoots great but I really missed having other shooters to shoot the bull with like I always did at Rampart. I hope I can make it to the next group shoot.

Wow, so a bunch of morons from Denver prove natural selection works and the rest of the public loses a low-cost facility? Don't get me wrong, I didn't feel comfortable shooting there because of the conditions I saw so I took out memberships at a couple ranges where I COULD feel safe but not everyone has the money or ability to do what I did. The poor have just as much right to practice shooting as the more well-to-do ...

I think it was the weekend after the shooting that I went to the south site. Just wanted to go for a drive in the Trans Am. Took the 38 super with me and only went to the short range on the right.

I did notice all the trash including a TV but since I had the TA I was only able to take 3 plastic grocery bags back with me. I do reload and 38 super is not something ya just pick up at wally world so I do like my brass back.

After filling 2 bags with shotgun shells the last bag I had went for my 38 super and the 40sw,9mm and 45acp I picked up. I guess next time I go I will take the dodge diesel and load it up.

Went today for about 4 hours. It was very clean. I only picked up a grocery bag of small trash like hulls n' wads, a couple of milk jugs off in the grass, and a shot up cloth covered particle board speakerbox.

No one else was at either of the 2 berms. There were a couple of pickups that headed off up 343 and I heard them shooting rifles. They didn't shoot much and didn't stay long.

I managed to measure off 300yds this time and had a blast with my new M14.

I'm looking at the overhead imagery from Google and I'm not really seeing any '343'? I see a range that seems about 100 yards long, orientated just west of straight north about 200 yards from 67.

I'd like to get my new JP and ACOG out and stretch its legs. Where can you shoot three hundred yards?

if you go up 343 to just past the "y" it is 300 yds. Repeat Repeat repeat that you can't shoot from there if there are any other people around as you are shooting across the road loop.

have fun.

I think I understand now, thanks. Is the dirt road off of 67 called 343?
Affirmative, sir. You will see some of those flexible plastic/fiberglass forestry signs marking the road. when you first pull in at about 100 yds the road bifurcates with the right side going the 2 berms. If you continue just past he farthest berm the road loops around and bifurcates again. Take the right side up to the next bifurcation. This is right at 300 yds. You will be able to shoot offhand or sitting but not prone or bench as you are actually on the road. This will all make much more sense when you are actually there.

give us a report on conditions etc when you get back.

An additional mapping resource lies at http://ndis.nrel.colostate.edu

It's primarily for vewing the range of animals for hunting, but also shows the forest roads on a topo map. It's another resource.

hahahahaha it WAS pretty awesome to shoot my new AR for the first time! [Coffee]

It just really sucked that it POURED the whole time. I wasn't able to even shoot a group on target because of the rain and I found out that my scope mount isn't high enough for my scope... that jerk lied to me. I finally stuck my HOLOsight on and shot a little, but I couldn't get it perfectly zeroed in. It was just raining too hard. I really wanted to shoot my .30-30 a little too, but the weather was just too foreboding. And yes. my clothes are STILL wet even though I hung them up. [BooHoo]

Well, I went to the South Shooting site on Saturday as promised and saw quite a few others come and go. I was there in the red jeep from 9am to about 2pm. Overall, I put 280rds through the new AR15, all 110gr Sierra ProHunters from Silver State Armory (http://www.ssarmory.com/6.8_spc_ammo-2-1-1-1-1.aspx).
Here's an action shot, trying to make the scope work... the mount was just about 1mm too low: (sorry if the quality kind of sucks... I had to clip this from a video clip... it wasn't actually dark outside)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2454/3941521024_43e3e1ef89.jpg

Here's my shiny new AR-15: http://www.flickr.com/photos/70616996@N00/3921068640/
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2626/3921068640_d65180075e.jpg

I have a pretty high-power scope, but my mount isn't high enough, so I couldn't get it mounted properly. So Instead I had to use my Bushnell HOLOsight (made by L3 Technologies... the parent company of EOtech optics).

Temp was about 65, less than 5 kts breeze, low humidity.

A lot of my groups were crappy because my target was blowing a little with the breeze to start out, but then I found more staples for my staple gun and tacked it down tight. I was firing 3 shot groups to conserve ammo and here's my best one:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2439/3939402925_b6e1dd9e9a.jpg

I shot the upper-right group first, (third shot completely missed the paper and hit the wooden post) but then I adjusted my HOLOsight a little and that's when I got my best group. The grid on the target is a 1 inch grid, so that group in the center is about a 1.1" group. Pretty darn good for no magnification I think! (Not sure how much luck played into it, but I know i'm not THAT good of a shooter...[Tooth])

Shot some prairie dogs today in SE Colorado with a fellow 6.8x43mm AR-15 owner. No pictures because I left my camera next to my computer... [Bang]

Overall, this was a pretty great weekend! I put about 330rds through my AR and it performed absolutely beautifully. If anyone is interested in a 6.8 AR, let me send you in the right direction: http://www.AR15Performance.com (http://www.ar15performance.com/)

Picked up what I could but had to stop after I filled the bed of my truck. I wasn't able to take the tailgate from a small Chevy truck that someone left. Picked up some busted bowling pins, beer cans, plywood, and cardboard boxes. Someone dropped off an Elk hide and left a cardboard box of rotting meat [Bang]. From Ft. Collins, its a long drive. 1 1/2 hour drive. you would do better at the north site outside of Lyons, am not great with Drictions though or spelling LOL

I just got back from the South Site. It was my first time there and it is in pretty decent shape. The only extra junk I brought back was a fair number of shotshells and a couple of targets. It gives me hope for the future shooting to see a public range that isn't trash.

I was scouting it out for a future visit bringing a trailer. Can I call dibs for a spot for next Saturday? It's a spot on the double left that ends up going south. About a half mile or so. There.s a road on the right with a closed sign in about 20 yars and a patch of bare dirt at the foot of the hill 220 yards in. I'd be happy to yield to anybody with a bigger caliber than mine, 225.

Has a fun day at the south site. Thanks to Tim K for his help. The spot I used had a target at the foot of the hill about 215 yards from my shooting position. I was shooting my repro of a Civil War 2.25 inch Bronze Mountain Rifle. I used lead Minie Balls weighing about 4 pounds with 3.5 ounces of Goex 1f BP. I was trying variations plain rounds, beeswax in the Minie cavity and wadding over the BP. Plain worked best. I got 2 out of 3 in the black with that. After 16 rounds of this I moved the cannon to point at a stump and tried some canister. Impressive stuff. It dispersed well.

Dang...4 lbs of lead per shot. I could get about 250 9mm bullets out of a chunk of lead like that.

Can you recover that chunk of lead or does it just splatter?

I recovered 7 out of 16. They were banged up but intact. The hillside was a mix of dirt and hard clay. If they hit the dirt they went right in and those were the ones I recovered. The ones that hit the clay left a skid in the ground and took off. If you find them you can keep them.

So I went to the South shooting site for the first time today. I had to convert the lat long from decimel so I could put it into my nav system. (its Latitude: 39° 8' 36.841" N Longitude: 105° 7' 41.408" W by the way) I didn't have any trouble finding it, but apparently you do have to watch out for people walking or driving across the top of the hill that you are shooting against. No accounting for a lack of common sense. I carried out more trash than I took in, which I guess is normal. I think the next time I go, I will take a table and shooting stool with me.

I have seen those people several times, can not imaging what is going thru the head at the time they walk over the rise....

I sometimes shoot there with my kids, we take a table and chairs, lots of fruit and other reative targets and get there early (by 8am). We set up in the 100yd lane and usually meet some nice folks before we leave around noon.

I drove down from Denver and worked out my AR, Hi Power, & 10-22.

I found that the battery had died on the MKII sight so I put it away as I didn't have a spare.

So I was about to pack up and a truck pulls up with some shooters, and I introduce myself to Tim K & his friend. After we talked a bit I tell Tim I didn't get to to shoot the MK II due to the battery and he tells me he has a spare- sweet!

So I installed the battery and plinked off 20 rounds - thanks Tim!

My pleasure. You left just in time. We each got in 10 rounds before the lightning scared us off the hill. By the time we got loaded back up the sky was in full fireworks mode. Cool to watch, but not conducive to good shooting.

I started this thread to let everyone know about the poor conditions of the South Site when I went up there after Rampart Range was closed. Since the closing of Rampart the site is getting more like a landfill. Sadly it is mostly the members of CO AR-15 that has taken care of the removal of trash. Thank you to everyone who has helped there just like anywhere else members shoot and clean for oter people to keep our public ranges open.

If you like I could start a thread titled:

The place was pristine... no trash... casings... left over targets... looked killer!

The drive over CO67 in my all wheel drive EVO X, which has new Eagle GT's, Hawk HPS Brake Pads and 2 degrees of neg camber was AWESOME! CO67 is so much fun to drift on. Ask ERIN MT... At one point he reached over and tightened his belts!

Also, we was blown away by the SCAR & AR's just lying in the back seat all exposed. Guess that's a no no in KALIFORNIA!

My two sons and I were there yesterday, and the spot we were at did have a little trash when we got there, but not terrible. We picked up what we could (a couple cans, some PVC piping, and target pieces), but there was still a pallet and what looked to be some moulding remnants left that we didn't have room for. Overall, we had a great time and the other people that were there seemed to take extra time to clean up anything that was left by others before they got there as well.

Photo of this firing range was pretty clean, the one below this had some pallets and stuff, I didn't have room in the car for all that. I cleaned up some items on the range shown, otherwise pretty good shape I think.

Went out there today. I had to take a spot up into the site a bit because the main spots were taken.

When I left I noticed pallets and a few other bits of trash at the first 2 sites (including the site gnihcraes has in his pic above - had a pallet or two).

Since I was full up with my gear and my buddies gear I wasn't able to stop and clean up the garbage left over from other shooters. Sorry.

On a side note, I went with my best friend/hunting partner and now he wants an AR. I also went with another friend and his 77yo father-in-law. The father-in-law owns a 30-06 (only) and has only shot it once - about 25 years ago. The son-in-law friend of mine doesn't own a gun. They brought out hte 30-06 and we had a little competition to see who'd shoot it the best.

I took out a couple of AR's, a GSG-5, about a dozen .22LR handguns, and a .45ACP 1911 (obviously everything was a loaner and none were mine since I lost everything in that tragic boating accident.).

My best friend brought his CZ 9mm and his .357mag carry gun.

They all had a blast and now the son-in-law is planning to buy a .22LR handgun (still up in the air as to what type/model) to get his wife and daughters into shooting and eventually a 9mm for personal defense. I know, 9mm, but he's gotta start somewhere, right? The 9mm is cheap enough to shoot and get used to it versus a .45. I offered him advice on all sorts of things ranging from the type of handgun (western styles, other wheel guns and semi-auto's) to different calibers. Since he needs to feel comfortable with his decision and since he is just starting out, I endorsed his choices so far.

The father-in-law is also planning to buy a 9mm for personal protection and for just plain old shooting fun.

They had a great time and I feel like I did my part to bring new folks into the shooting sports. I was especially pleased that they listened to me as our "Range Officer" and they practiced excellent safety skills.

The shooting gods must have been with me today because I was really on the money with my shots (really impressed the friend and his father-in-law). Wish I could shoot like that all of the time but I didn't tell them I was just having a really good day!

Oh, and I won the impromptu 30-06 competition. Not bad for a rifle that I haven't shot before and I know it isn't sighted properly.

This was only my second time shooting this year. I know, I know. I plan to go out again next weekend with my son and his girlfriend. May use one of the shooting sites off of Mt. Herman Road West of Monument. Overall, I didn't shoot very much, but the 1991 finally broke it's virginity after more than a year and a half since it was purchased.

Now, I have a lot of guns to clean. UGH!

Given that I'm paranoid and have learned a few things from some of your posts and articles I've read, I did maintain a fully loaded and ready 92FS on my hip as a
deterrent against someone coming and deciding to relieve us of our firearms.

I was there today. Oops - midnight - yesterday. I was planning on Ben Lomond but their calendar showed about 4 events. There were a few carloads of people. I went down to the south side and had a nice area to myself. It was great for a lot of rifle & pistol. I was amazed I actually could hit the target. A lot of crazy stuff has happened for me for some time so it was my first real shooting session in over a year. Over a 100 rounds through a P3-AT really hammer my hand.

I brought a couple bags of trash out. Mostly shotgun shells and paper targets. Some cardboard also. If I would have had gloves I would have hauled some pallet remnants. I know they biodegrade and all that but they look like crap all shot to pieces. Still, it was pretty clean. I hope it stays that way.

Headed out for the first time today. Pretty drive from Highlands Ranch. There was another couple there (I went with my wife) but otherwise the place was abandoned.

Pretty clean for a public range. Just some a few steel cases here and there (which rust away over time anyway) and a few busted watermelons on the berm. We made sure to police up our targets and our brass (as well as some debris on the berm) before we left. Lets keep up the good work so this range stays clean and open.

Just returned from there myself. After I dialed in the 270 where I wanted it, I finished off the watermelon carcasses with about 50 of my first ever 223 reloads.

If you're heading from the Springs, take 67 out of Woodland Park it's one mile past the sign for Rainbow Falls. Turn left onto the road head up abit -can't miss it!

If you're heading from North of there, someone else will have to chime in.

I was there today. I'm a Ben Lomond member but it was such a great I decided the mountains would be more fun. I like this global warming stuff. I was out there in a t-shirt and was warm. Barely any breeze.

I went further south than usual and it gets really clean down there. I had to work to get a small bag of shotgun shells and brass, I hope it stays like this for a long time. The shooters there take care of it.

I'd seen the horror show years ago at Rampart Range and joined a club. Hope the nimrods who ruined that will never find the south site.

I shoot at the south site almost every weekend and I've seen a tremendous increase in the number of shooters out there in the last year. It's still fairly clean and I pick up trash when I go, but I worry about the future of this area since I'm seeing more and more of the same "people" I used to see at Rampart Range.

We went yesterday and saw two other trucks, it's still cold enough that it's snowy- once it warms a bit it's gonna get soupy. But if you have a 4wd or awd you should be good to get back in to it while it stays this temp.

If you like 20 mph twisty curving roads for 45 minutes, there is a way to get there from Castle Rock. Otherwise going down to Colo. Springs then come in from the south is better.
