I figured at least one or two people here would have probably dealt with this in the past, so I figured I'd ask.

just bought a new (to me) truck. it has a class 5 receiver and towing package already installed. I have a 2-5/16" ball mounted on a class 4 drop hitch that I have been using with the little adapter sleeve. so far only the empty trailer.

Im about to drag all of my worldly possessions across the country and I am wondering if I should source a real 2-1/2" class 5 drop hitch, or am I good to go with the class 4 and the adapter sleeve? seems like the pin gets the brunt of the load either way.

also, is there a local source for a class 5 drop hitch?

thanks in advance for any info.

These guys have helped me out several times in the past, even when I was only asking questions and not buying products/services.

I pull tons of stuff using just the sleeve and a 2" hitch. As long as you aren't exceeding any of the weight tolerances you should be good to go. Most balls are going to be 6000+ lbs for 2" and better than that for 2 5/16". Hitch should be 6000+, and the pin I have I think is 12000#

Start with the basic "how much weight are you going to be towing?"
with the follow-up "what will the tongue weight be"

depending on the vehicle and the load, you may need a weight distributing hitch (transfers tongue weight to the front axle of the towing vehicle)

I prefer a goose neck hitch (or 5th wheel) for anything over 10K Lbs... I've never used a class V "bumper" hitch

If you want to buy one, you are right in the neighborhood of the Denver area supplier. It is right there in Fredrick next to Transwest.
Redneck Trailer Supply.
They dont do service and only sell parts.. until about 2 years ago they were wholesale only.... now you too can get parts at the distributor.
