View Full Version : That time of year again - looking for good tire deals.

Last time I got the best deal I could find for my wife's car at the dealership, believe it or not.
I've been looking at tirebuyer.com (http://tirebuyer.com) lately. Some good deals, offers and free shipping on some, but they don't have what I really like for her car. Anyone use these guys before?

Never used tirebuyer. Tirerack.com has a distribution center in Denver. You can order online and pick them up in Denver. No shipping fees. You can also use this to negotiate with local dealers.
I also may have a gently used set or two available shortly. What size do you need? Type of vehicle?

Yeah...some good deals on CL. Lots of near-new take-offs. Finding the right size is the hard part.
Ya, wish I was seeing near new BFG K02/Toyo AT/2/Duratrac's up for sale ;p
WTH is the difference between these 2. I guess LT is light truck, but both same size/appearance? Just dont know the fiddly numbers after the R to make one so much more expensive.

The numbers I'm talking about whernt on that page. Already checked it. Think the extended numbers past the usual ratings is more model specific. Price difference I guess is just a light truck vs passenger tire.
LT going to be more durable offroad, but would winter traction be similiar between the 2 or also different I wonder. ..

I spent quite a bit of time researching and comparing before deciding on what I think is the best tire out there- the Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread. Can't tell you where to get it at the best price, although I got mine for a killer deal at Discount tire.

I'm in the market to buy a set of tires for my 99 Durango (mine, but effectively it's my sons). He doesn't do any more than street driving so the purchase of off road tires that don't hold up as long as a typical street tire isn't feasible and think I should go with something that holds up better and handles well in wet slick, snowy or icey roads. I'm not a brand snob anymore as I'm not willing to pay more for a brand.
So I'm not sure what would be a good tire for this vehicle. Ideas?

What is the vehicle you need tires for? That might help.
I've always liked Hankook tires. Not sure where you could get them around Gilpin.
ETA: Ginsue, Definitely look at the Hankook Dynapros. They are smooth, quiet, and last a long time. Great in snow, decent on jeep trails or gravel, and I put more than 65k on my last set.

I replaced the BFG Long Trails on my Frontier with Hankook Dynapro AT/M. Damn good tire and pretty quiet.
I'll have to look at Hankook since many of you seem to like them. I typically use BFG's on my Tacoma I've gotten 80k out of my first set. Amazing.

Ive bought 2 sets of tires from tire buyer and had them delivered and installed at Tire World. I added lifetime balance and rotation + road hazard warranty total out the door was half the cost of Discount. I did shop around the atire Buyer installers to get the best install price etc.

Biggest difference is the amount of material in the tire. The LT/E1 tire is 10 ply, designed for heavy vehicles and towing, the other is for mom-mobiles and is only 4 ply or so, and won't last for crap on a heavy vehicle.

Ginsue - I have a 2000 Durango, and have had BFG All Terrain T/As on it for the past 13 years. Outstanding rain and snow tire that wears like iron. About $650 or so, installed, at Costco, as I recall.
Conversely, 10-ply tires on a light truck will result in a more bone jarring ride.

Dealers have been very competitive lately, Phil Long was willing to match any written quote on something they sell. Granted i still went with Costco due to location. Always check the manufacturer website for rebates as well

We've had really good luck with Firestone Destination A/T's. I had them on my previous SUV and run them on my Xterra . . . and my wife has them on her Explorer. Nice ride, good in wet/snow, and they seem to hold up pretty well over time.

Looking closely at these for my Xterra. They seem a bit milder than what I'd prefer, but I've heard really great things about their performance.
Don't be so set on hankook. Look up the optimo if you have questions. Do your research

That's all we ran on the wife's 2WD 1500 Silverado. She never had an issue driving in snow, icy roads etc. She also knows how to drive in bad weather, never in a rush, fast starts or believing any vehicle can stop faster than it's going on bad roads.
Here's the deal... you picked the perfect time. A couple of times a year GM does a deal where you bring in any written quote and they will not only match it but they'll give you $100 mail in rebate on top of that. That's $25 lower per tire than the cheapest price you can find. They do two rebate amounts of either $50 or $100 depending on the tire make. Here's the link to the rebate form for more details (https://mycertifiedservicerebates.com/PDFs/Offer%2066001%20-%20Certified%20Service%20Tire%20Rebate.pdf). Just find a local GM dealership that qualifies. For those in Northern Colorado I suggest hitting up snichols28 here as he's an employee @ Markley and can get you set up on this deal. So your timing is right as that's the best deal you're going to find.
As for what to get, after years and countless vehicles my go-to tires for 4x4 are Duratracs & my go-to tire for sport sedans is Continental DWS. IMO those are two of the best/more advanved all around tires you're going to find for all conditions here in Colorado all times of the year and they last a long time at an affordable price without too much road noise. They're not the best at any one category but they do them all very well which is what I like about them. I'm sure others have plenty of things to say about other options but that's my suggestion as it's all I'll be using unless someone comes out with something that's better/cheaper.

I agree with you on the Duratracs Jer, but they are not nearly as affordable as they used to be.

On the deal I posted they're pretty damn affordable. Get a couple quotes locally to play off of each other until you know you've got the best deal you can get and then take another $25 off per tire via that rebate I posted. I know when I tell people what I paid they're always amazed. I know prices have changed but you can usually play a couple local shops off of each other to get the price close to cost and then take on the rebate on top of that. It takes a month or two to get the rebate but it's free money so I'm not complaining. Hell, if you want to give me half of my money back in a year on top of that.... I'll wait. ;-)

Yep, it's what I used to strap some Duratracs on this non-GM pig:

Jer, on those duratracs they have a normal and a LT version. Which do you have on the tacoma?
Unsure if my Tundra would need the heavier LT's given I dont tow and dont really carry very heavy stuff often.

For my Tacoma I chose to go with a Load C which is a 6ply tire. It's made for my truck & I get better MPG & no balancing issues. Coincidentally those who complain about balancing issues w/Duratracs usually have Load E 10ply tires. They claim that they are less like to chunk when 4 wheeling on low tire pressure. Whatever.
If you have a Tundra it's borderline as it's capable of handling heavier loads than my Tacoma even though you don't plan to. Your truck is also heavier itself. Harder call on yours but if they made your size in a Load D that may be ideal.
The OEM tires arnt a heavier Lt or load rating so was why I figured maybe OK. Stock was dueler 684 2s or something which is listed as like aa sub/cuv tire

Found a good deal on 4wd.com but kinda a little too good to be true/never head of them/not sure if I can trust. (One of the top ads when searching other stuff.)
Have you tried eBay? I got a set of 4 brand new E load 285/75r16 Duratracs for $850 shipped. I also think discount tire is running a sale right now http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/12/abd6f2b87dd5e1c2ed706a5c548e9659.jpg
I'm about to put another set of Cooper AT3s on my 2006 tacoma. I'm at just over 60k miles and not quite to the wear bar. Best tire I've ever had and I have owned them ALL...BFG, ProComp, Nitto, Pirelli, Hankook, etc. Fantastic road manners and all the off road capability I need. I've always bought from discount tire. For this set, they priced matched the lowest Internet price I could find AND let me use their $70 off promotion. I'm out the door with a new set of 275/70-17s for just over $700.

Been looking real close at the AT3 as well. Had a set of Cooper STT's on a Jeep a few years ago and was quite impressed. I've heard nothing but good things about the AT3.

Guys on TacomaWorld are talking about 75k out of a set of Duratracs. Lots of variables of course in their #'s as well as yours but I don't think you can go wrong with either one for overall tread wear.
Jer,
Any experiance with the noise level of a duratrac vs the silent armour tires? I want more agressive tires for my burb as it is the winter car, but I also use it on the weekends and don't want to go too loud. Silent armour are great when brand new, but get questionable in snow when half worn, not to mention the price...

I doubt there is much comparison in the noise department between the two, with the SA being a good bit quieter. With that said there is likely a big difference in performance, and I haven't heard nearly as many good things about the SA. My Duratracs were still great in the snow at the 50% mark, although a good bit louder than when new. I love me some Duratracs, but am becoming a square in my old age, and would prefer a friendlier tire on the road, as off road only takes up 10-15% of my driving these days.

Not to my knowledge. I've seen a couple people post that the Duratracs can be noisy and that hasn't been my experience at all. In fact, I felt they were much quieter than less aggressive tread pattern tires and, to my ears, they were actually fairly quiet at all speeds. That being said I think if you focus on any one category you will ultimately be let down with something like an all season all terrain tire in this region on a 4x4 truck. There's just too many categories to consider and, as I said already, I think the Duratrac is great in every category. It may not be the absolute best in every individual category but that's not what makes it a great time IMO. It just does everything well and ticks every box rather than excelling at a couple at the cost of a couple others the way other tires seem to do. My guess is that a tire engineered strictly for road noise will fall short in other categories.

Yep. This is why I'm glad I prefer the look (not to mention the offroad performance) if a taller sidewall and smaller wheels on a 4x4 truck. My cars.... well that's another story entirely. I've spent some stupid coin on wheels & rubber for my sports cars and sports sedans over the years.

Wonder how 16s with bug tire look on tundra... Painful, for big 3 I'm looking at 215 to 244 a tire with exception of that 4wd parts site I mentioned and leery of (222 tire for like 190 there) half that price for 16sounds nice... Am lucky with one of them the x/70/18 is actually cheaper somehow than the x/65/18.

I wouldn't do 16" on a full size truck & I don't think you can even clear the brakes. Sounds like the prices you've found already aren't terrible now just combine them Emmy pro tip. So $200/tire less the $100 rebate I mentioned early gets you in the $700 range. That's way better than $1300 anyway.

Can they custom order other tires, because when I searched the chevy dealers websites (many dealerships use the same tire lookup system it looks like) they didn't have duratracs or BFG KO2's.

I believe so. I mean I got Duratracs. I seem to recall they got them in like the next day too. If you're near Fort Collins call or go into Markley Motors and ask for Steve Nichols. Ask him all of your questions. Car dealership websites are worthless as tits on a boar hog.

Not much of a price difference from 20 - 18" rim. I guess if you have a big truck you gotta pay big money for tires. Like you said, you have to pay to play.

That's a very underhanded deal...
Their website shows $330/tire for my tires (no sale - $1320 for 4).
Their ebay deal is 4x tires for $1420, minus $100 and free shipping.
Net result: make people feel like they got a deal, when they're paying the normal price.
Only benefit is saving tax if you aren't in Texas, Ohio, or Arizona.

Anyone have an opinion of the Toyo open country at or mt?
Depends on what you're driving...
AT's served me well on the Xterra. Sucked major balls on the Dodge.
MT's were bald as a babies butt inside of 20K miles on my Dodge.
On lighter vehicles, the AT's seem okay.
Anything heavier not great.

Good tire, I had a set on f150. They where heavy though.

I didn't have a chance to research the deal, just passing along. I still think the deal I did to get my tires is the way to go. Get the cheapest price you can by playing places against each other then take the cheapest price you find to dealer who will match and give you a $100 rebate on top of that. Not going to find any better than that.

I'd avoid the Yoko's.
Your new Dmax has a lot of power from the factory, not quite the same as my modded Dodge, but the power of these trucks tears the snot out of tires.
Taco's and gasser half-tons can run them pretty successfully, but they weigh a lot less and have a fraction of the torque.
