View Full Version : Jr. High trap shooting or olympic-style smallbore programs for kids?
My daughter has shown some interest in shooting sports. Any suggestions on any formal programs in the metro area - SE side of town even better.
I can and have taken her to the range myself, and might sign her up for some fun weekend shoots eventually, but I thought I'd look into something more formal. Was surprised to find how confusing it was. 4H, USA Shooting, NSSF, etc.
I'm assuming there are programs out there, and probably some more popular than others. Anybody involved or have any suggestions?
Contact Keith Roberts at Golden Gun Club. He manages the small bore and junior programs out there.
There is a match this Saturday at the Olympic Training Center, air pistol and rifle in the am, small bore afternoon if you wanted her to see what a competition looks like. You will see beginners up to national team members on the line. If you come by shoot me a on and I'll give you the tour.
NTC Shooting Club Juniors is the club that practices at the OTC and we have been very happy with the program. We tried 4h first but did not have the time for all the other activities needed to participate.
I would suggest exposing her to several types and let her decide which she prefers. There are a bunch of straight line sports like benchrest, small bore, silhouette. Then there are the clay sports and then the timer based action sports. The doors are wide open and most people are ready and willing to help new shooters get started.
Agree with Mark, my son only became interested when we found shotgun and 3gun while my daughter likes percision.

If trapshooting is what she is interested in let me know. Buddy of mine is one of the best. I'm sure he can point you in the right direction.

Check out your local 4H program. They shoot trap, skeet, and 5 stand. For .22, they shoot rifle and pistol.
