View Full Version : Tula- What changed?
The round on the right was purchased about a month ago, left was yesterday. Functionally, what's the difference?

They saved half a penny per round and stopped copper washing the steel jacket?

doesn't matter when you bought it, check the lot numbers to see when they were manufactured relative to each other

Exactly what I was thinking. I had the same thing with a .40 sw , since that I stopped buying Russian crappy ammo, for a dollar more you can buy a us made reloadable brass / copper jacket ammo.

Reloading berdan primed ammo isn't that hard. Neither is boxer primed steel case, for those that choose to do so.

Where's that deal for .223? That ammo is $235/1000 delivered. Let us know where where we can get that for "$1 more." Is that $1 more for 50? 100? 20?

I've been getting wolf gold for $300/1000 shipped. Getting close to time for another bunch if someone has pointers to a better deal.

I like Wolf Gold and the price is impossible to beat. I'll be sad when it disappears or goes up in price.

I meant .40SW ammo, but for a $1.2 more for a box of 20 ( 1K $296-299 shipped) you can get a .223 Wolf gold it's reloadable brass cased, Taiwan made ammo.

Crap. I looked at that site, but didn't see that deal. I purchased that same package from them about a year ago. Good find.

Does the "Gold" have steel core projectiles too?
Does the "Gold" have steel core projectiles too?
Nope. Standard 55gr lead bullet with a copper jacket. No steel at all.

The steel case 55gr tula didn't have steel core .
All of my lead projectiles have a magnetic attraction to the X-ring, just sayin' YMMV!

The "magnetic" wolf/comblock has a steel/bi-metallic jacket. Lead core bullet - says so on the box (LCB).
Copper-washed soft steel jacket material is the usual for combloc surplus and cheap production.
Wolf gold is lead core bullet with copper/gilding metal jacket, like most commercial US production.

Was looking at that deal again, and noticed it ships in a 40mm ammo can this time. Last year it shipped in a 50 cal can. I guess this way, they just slide the unopened case in, instead of repacking the individual boxes.

Wolf Gold used to be Prvi Partisan production. ("PPU" or "nny" headstamp) Not sure if it still is. I like Prvi Partisan.

I've had good luck with PPU (Prvi) 5.56 for several years. It is my understanding that the Wolf Gold is now coming out of a US mil contract plant in Taiwan. Same plant that makes .mil contract issue ammo with TAA code on the ammo cans. Just what I have heard.

Question for you all. With prices falling do you all shoot more steel or brass?
I've been shooting a lot of brass and steel lately........ And don't care about barrel or bcg wear bc for every 4-5k rounds I'll buy a new BCG and Barrel... Or just keep shooting the shit out of my gun.
I use to believe the hype and never shoot steel, then I shoot the two intermixed for a couple years and then went to only brass bc I was reloading a lot. Now a days I don't reload much and I like walking off my range without picking up cases.

If it was somewhere i was unable to pick up spent cases i'd shoot the wolf or tula.. otherwise it's brass. Nothing wrong with the steel case ammo. One can reload the wolf as it's boxer primed, the tula still berdan.

Yes. Didn't notice the 40mm can until it arrived. Would prefer the 50 call can but not a big deal.

They still offer the 50 cal can option, but it wasn't free shipping.
I prefer the 50 as well, but "free" is "free". You still did ok. You can always sell off the 40mm can, and make somebody happy. Consider it "free shipping" and slightly cheaper ammo.

Sent about 500 rounds of wolf gold down range on Friday. Also some freedom munitions and pmc.
The wolf was cleaner, less smoke, and all went bang. Noticed a huge difference between wolf and freedom. Enough that I'm done buying freedom unless it's the only thing available in a reasonable price range. Freedom looked like a black powder rifle compared to the wolf gold. Also a very noticeable difference in the amount of crap in the action shooting w a supressor. Wolf had a fraction of what the freedom leaves.
Pmc was......pmc. More smoke and filth than the wolf gold. I'm buying more of this stuff.

If it runs OK in your rifle(s) and you want it, go for it. If you're not sure if it runs, make sure first, IMO.

What he said. Make sure your rifles run good with it before buying in bulk. Early on I purchased several thousand rounds of that exact same ammo only to discover that one of my rifles does not function with it. Now, before I hear that a rifle should run with any and all ammo, my rifle was gone over by a few experts on here and my rifles are fine, just don't like the Tula steel cased mentioned above. Has to do with tighter chamber and I am not willing to have the chamber reamed in order to run steel.
So in short, try before you commit to a large quantity. I believe you can pick up a few boxes at Walmart and try it out.

Jeez, almost half a year later and no reply? The new stuff is zinc coated, as opposed to copper.
Essentially, galvanized bullets. They're supposedly more consistent and accurate.
