Never knew that PSA did AK's.
What I'm leery about by just reading your post is that the barrel is already pinned in the receiver.
First off what barrel did they use? Probably a newly made U.S. barrel, but what front trunnion did they use and how did they achieve head spacing? You need to have the bolt to headspace it properly with.

If it comes with the bolt and it is head spaced properly all you really need to do is source out the rest of the parts to include the 922 compliant parts like the fire control group, muzzle break and the gas piston, and put it all together.
The hard part of riveting in the trunnions, welding in the rails and heat treating are already done, providing it actually is a full receiver.
Lots of guys on the board here has done builds, myself included and we can give you any pointers you may need ;)

I think the PSA barreled receiver the OP is talking about comes headspaced with the bolt. I think.

There's a post talking about it here. Not a plug and play deal

Ah, I did not see the post.
But if it's not a plug and play deal I would personally stay away from it then. It would probably cost more in the long run then if you just got a kit with a headspaced barrel and a Nodak receiver.

http://armsofamerica.com/polishakmsunderfolderwnewheadspacednitridelinedbar relonsale-1-1.aspx( link says underfolder but its a fixed stock kit)- get a Nodak, rivet together and done for under $600
Now if you want a fully assembled ak for less you can find WASR's still going for $400 or so if you shop around.

I didn't see that post I don't know anything about ak's that is why I was worried about building one on my own I'll have to check that out I wanted to make sure I made an informed decision before I start buying the parts and have a pile of parts on the bench that I can't do anything with

Buy one ready to go. In today's market it's easier and cheaper to walk in to one of the LGS. Fill out the 4473, pay at the register and walk out. Don't forget, buy a lot of ammo.

I caught one on sale and finished it up in about two hours. It was very easy and it is high quality from what I can tell. Mine had an issue with the bolt hanging up but they gave me a shipping label to send the full rifle back in to correct the issue. My dad got one too and his functions flawlessly.

I would recommend them (at least in the short term). Especially because they are standing behind their product.

Could or , should have.....When you see one, grab it. For some reason AK prices are going no where but UP, slowly but surely. One of the best prices i've seen up here is an AK for $500 & change, from of all places Garretsons.. Not exactly known for their under $500-1000 pricing policy.

Try buying / locating that set used, on line. The MI set i had lasted maybe 2-3 weeks, before i realized i didn't like them. . I see them for sale more often than not. YMMV

BTW: it's trunion, not reunion ;) Happy Motoring

Lol autocorrect some times I hate it, any where you would recommend looking for a used one. I haven't seen any used mi hand guards on here for the Ak or ar15. I put a mi 15" free float rail on my wife's ar15 and I like it has worked out great so I figured the Ak hand guard should be just as good. What did you not like about it?

Anywhere on line. It is bulky, gets hot ( not too bad) and cost IMO more than its worth. The rail isn't a free float unit. What works on an AR doesn't necessarily translate to working on an AK. Or other guns. Don't get me wrong, it looked sharp on my AK. However it just didn't work for me.

They make great products. Do they (like magpul) belong on everything, IMO, No. I'm sure there's a few members who run them. Hopefully they'll chime in with their opinion.

If you are looking for a new AK; especially your first one, take a look at DDI. I have the Zhukov model and they are simply first rate. They are just as nice as any Arsenal I've seen and the action is super nice. They are definitely the best bang for your buck. If you don't want the magpul stuff you can get one with Hogue, wood, or no furniture. They sell a ready to go rifle minus furniture which sounds like exactly what you are looking for. If you buy an IO, in my experience, put hands on it first and really check it out before you commit. If you decide to look for a used MI rail, check the firearms accessories section on Armslist. Good luck

Considering it has magpul furniture on it, it's not a bad looking AK

If I attempt to purchase a fully built AK, I may go the PSA route.

Revisiting this; looking at PSA's kit that's currently in stock:

http://palmettostatearmory.com/psak-47-zhukov-alg-build-kit.html

I'm not forced to use PSA's receiver with this, right? If I got something like an Atlantic Arms receiver, bolt, and barrel, and did the work to headspace etc. woukd I would be good to go? I like the idea of the Zhukov sidefolder on a standard receiver, hence my interest. I also don't really want to buy a demilled military parts kit with wood furniture that I'll never use.

Tl;dr: I'd like to build an AK with that furniture but do it cost-effectively, would love input. :) Thanks.

Buy a Nodak receiver and AK parts kit with bolt, and U.S mfg bbl. Then buy the magpul furniture. Those kits are offering you nothing besides US furniture for the $$. You still need a bbl & bolt (head space required) The AoA is head spaced, US nitride bbl, complete less U.S receiver AND flashy Magpul stock set. It will cost more, but IMO be a better gun for the money. YMMV
