Holy crap, is this for real? Is a suppressed .22 bolt rifle really this quiet? (Subsonic ammo, I presume) If so, I'm gonna start saving my pennies NOW!

Yep. I've been around a couple of guys with supressed 22 bolt guns. It's weird to squeeze off a shot and actually hear the sound of the trigger mechanism working.

Lots of us have them. At matches we sometimes need to tell the spotter when we're shooting because the sound of a few guys talking makes it hard to hear when the gun goes off. i put a new shooter behind mine, and he thought the gun had not fired until he saw the target move.

They're pretty quiet.

Don't forget ammunition used is a determining factor as well. Sub-sonic vs high velocity,....

Lost in the woods with you, apparently.

I have no issue with most 22 ammo in the bolt actions. Of course the lower velocity stuff is one of a firing pin falling, CLICK and alittle push of air as the round exits the suppressor.
If you want a bolt action 22 for it's ease of suppression. You should road test my lever action 38/357 ;)

The manual on my 15/22 specifically says not to use subsonic rounds. Have you had any issues with this?

Not yet. The squirrels have the issues with it. Hypothetically. I tried a few subs and no issues.

Heck yea I read the manual. And I'm going to post it too so that everyone else has to ;)


Through our testing, Smith & Wesson has also found that thereare several brands and types of .22LR ammunition that do notperform consistently or reliably. Consequently, Smith & WessonDOES NOT RECOMMEND that the following brands or types of.22LR ammunition be used in your M&P15-22 rifle:• Remington Golden Bullet • Remington Thunderbolt• Remington Target 22 • Winchester Wildcat• Any and all sub-sonic brands and types

Funny... The most accurate ammo I have tried so far is Eley Edge which is subsonic.

Guess those crazy guys at Smith didnt try any decent flavors of subs.

Probably a CYA, when someone calls and want's to know why their rifle isn't working.

They didn't say they were inaccurate, they said they didn't perform consistently and reliably in the M&P 15-22. I'm guessing the subsonics may not always generate enough pressure to cycle the M&P 15-22 reliably. I'll echo their warning against Remington Thunderbolt. I won't let that garbage near any of my firearms anymore; there is something wrong when it leaves so much lead behind that you have to use powertools to clean out your barrel.

+1 to Thunderbolt, that stuff has ruined a rifle on me too
