Have used Xtreme plated 124 g 9mm bullets in my G19 Gen 4 using 4.1 gr of Bullseye, chronographs about 970 FPS.......... Lots of key holing at 7 meters. Sent a message to Xtreme Bullets and am awaiting an answer. My guess is that I am not pushing them fast enough, but I am open for input and ideas. Used plated to save a little $$, but know to keep velocities in mid range and just a taper crimp....

Loaded on a Dillon, nothing exotic about my range loads.

I invite your comments, ideas and input.........headed out to chrono in the morning with some 4.4 gr Bullseye to see if more velocity cures the problem.......

TIA

To tight a crimp, causing plating to shred / peel when exiting bbl.

To tight a crimp, causing plating to shred / peel when exiting bbl.

This was one of my first rookie reloading eff ups, and I loaded up a significant quantity to boot.

My opinion is the Xtreme plated are too soft (core). Try Berry's plated, they seem to be a harder core.

I've had trouble with the xtreme crumpling up during seating with little to no crimp, same flare I always use on the cases.

Just a thought. No actual proof that would be the cause for keyholes. I've been using Berry's without issue in my G19. (Power Pistol, 6.0 and 115 grain fmj) or (Silhouette, 5.7 and 115 fmj)

Seems like a very light load. I loaded xtreme 115gr with 4.4gr of bullseye, at 1.150 OAL and had no issues with them. Cycling and ejection were weak when I loaded 4.0gr.

No experience with Bullseye. My load is 4.1gr Titegroup under Xtreme 124gr Flatpoint with CCI 500 primer and 1.075ish OAL (flat point has to be seated deeper). I've had zero issues in my CZ75B or two different Glock 17s. I don't know the difference between Bullseye and Titegroup though.

^^^^ 1.075" maybe?

Crimp too tight is likely the issue. Your crimp die should be adjusted with the shell plate all the way up and the die backed out. Then run it down until it touches, then add 1/8 of a turn.

I am Xtreme ProStaff, so feel free to send me any questions and I will do my best to help you out.

Guys, thanks. Problem solved. I googled a couple other forums and the comments here. My crimp die was way too tight for plated bullets. Backed it off to pretty much just enough crimp to take out the belling, test fired and we are good. Thanks for your comments.....Problem solved. Glad I didn't blow anything up!!!!!

FWIW, RMR Bullets (Rocky Mountain Reloading) has a new line of "match" plated bullets that are excellent! Very thick plating, able to take a good crimp and high velocities, and are incredibly accurate. I've tested their .38 & .45 cal, and just got some of their 9mm bullets to try. Prices are very reasonable too!

Glad you got it worked out, crimping is usually the culprit with plated bullets, as you've discovered.

Just got 3K of 9MM 124gr FMJ from RMR at 8.4 cents a bullet which is better than Xtreme at 7.4 cents for plated..... Still got 500 Xtreme bullets to burn up, but I am good with the www.rmrbullets.com (http://www.rmrbullets.com) product, from the 100 rounds I have test fired and chronographed.......Thanks for all the input...
