Traveling with a supressor, do you actually need to advise the ATF?

Driving, not flying. Legal In all states that I will be traveling through. I've heard you have to notify via letter and Ive also heard you only have to notify if it's a permanent move. Has anyone traveled for a hunting trip or a class?

Been doing not some research on this myself. From what I've read supressors and AOW don't require notification.

I am not a lawyer just FYI but no if it's not a temp/permanent move.

The verbage doesn't state that you need to like it does sbr's however like so many areas they make grey it doesn't state that you don't either. Only suppressor travel verbage you will see states that no notification is required for legal interstate suppressor travel.

This link contains the form for SBR / machine gun travel. If filling it out gives you piece of mind just check (Yes) that they will be returned to original address.

I know that guys in either Washington or Oregon can own suppressors, but can't shoot them in their state, so they drive across state lines to do so. That may have recently changed, but it'd be worth tracking down some NFA owners from the area to ask, as someone who crosses state lines just to shoot their can will probably have a pretty good idea.

I've gone to like minded NFA states. Copy of the F1 or F4, double checked to make sure what paperwork i had was for items on hand. I.D (Check) An Attorney friend in cell phone (Check) lots of ammo (Check) gas and supplies in vehicle, load em up , move em out.

It's not a big deal, UNLESS Barney FIFE want's to get that second bullet awarded to him. Here's the ATF's number 304-616-4500 (ATF)

Remember, There is the Technical Branch and Legal / Enforcement side to them guys. IF you call write down NAME, DATE, TIME, of conversation.

No, legally, the 5320.20 form is not required for suppressors. However, many including ATF "recommend" filling one out.

The directions on the form:
a. A written request and prior authorization from ATF to transport interstate or in foreign commerce any destructive device, machinegun, short- barreled rifle, or short-barreled shotgun is required under the provisions of Section 922 (a)(4), Title 18, U.S.C., and Section 478.28, Title 27, CFR, a letter of request, in duplicate, containing all information required on this form, may be submitted in lieu of the form.


If you do fill it out, you can fill it out for up to a year's worth of travel. Some guys submit paperwork once a year for everything NFA they own, to everywhere they might travel.

Tanks guys for the info. That's what I thought, I just needed a concensus from the group. Just checked for a hunting lic and it was almost a grand.... Last minute trip. So it sounds like the guns will stay home and I'll be a packer of what others get.
