I heard about this on the radio and immediately started swearing. My wife yelled at me for being so negative. She apparently wasn't paying attention, because I don't know how anyone could have any other reaction. What kind of asshole does one have to be to put out such a BS "study" like this? Anyway, enjoy.

http://www.newsweek.com/60-people-will-die-early-thanks-volkswagen-388117

The Volkswagen scandal now has a death toll forecast.By the end of 2016, VW’s cars, rigged with “defeat devices” to cheat on emissions tests, will have pumped out enough excess toxic pollution to directly contribute to the premature deaths of around 60 people in the U.S. alone, MIT and Harvard University researchers determined in a new study published Monday (http://www.eurekalert.org/emb_releases/2015-10/miot-sve102715.php) in Environmental Research Letters .
In a scandal that already has its own Hollywood blockbuster (http://www.newsweek.com/leonardo-dicaprio-paramount-produce-movie-about-volkswagen-emissions-scandal-382581) in the works, Volkswagen rigged some 11 million cars around the world to pass government emissions tests while still emitting far more than the legal limit of the harmful pollutant NOx. The 482,000 diesel vehicles Volkswagen and Audi sold in the U.S. between 2008 and 2015 emitted as much as 40 times more NOx than permitted by the Clean Air Act. The researchers estimated that over the period from 2008 to 2015, those cars pumped out an extra 36.7 million kg of NOx emissions.

NOx pollution, an important component of both smog and fine particulate matter, is associated (http://www3.epa.gov/airquality/nitrogenoxides/health.html) with early death, a host of respiratory diseases and heart disease, among a range of other health problems. All that extra NOx, then, is a real public health threat: The researchers found that when they extrapolated the health impact of the excess pollution over the U.S. population, it was enough to cause roughly 60 people to die 10 to 20 years prematurely. They note that some of those deaths have not happened yet, because it can take the conditions associated with air pollution a while to reach deadly severity.
What’s more, that level of excess pollution from 2008 to 2015 will “contribute directly” to 31 cases of chronic bronchitis and 34 hospital admissions for heart and respiratory conditions in the U.S., some of which have already occurred, and others which have yet to. It’ll also lead to 120,000 “minor restricted activity days,” like missing work or school, and roughly 210,000 days of lower-respiratory symptoms, such as coughing. They calculate that all those sick people, from 2008 through the end of 2015, will cost the country $450 million.
If Volkswagen issues a total recall of all its rigged cars in the U.S. in January 2016, and completes a gradual phase-out that takes them all off the road by December 2016, like it already says it will do in Europe (http://www.newsweek.com/volkswagen-recall-begin-january-380568), another 130 early American deaths will be avoided, the study found. However, if VW doesn't issue that recall and the rigged cars continue to be driven without modification, they’ll cause an additional 140 early deaths from 2015 onwards. Overall health costs caused by the cars, they estimate, would rise to $840 million.

How can anybody take any of this seriously?

The same crew that believes over 30K are killed each year by guns. With that number expected to go higher as the proliferation of assault style weapons flood the streets.

Hey You asked.

When the life-giving trace gas CO2 is labelled a "toxin" by these same people, why are we surprised?

If I was a MSM propagandist, I would announce that "as the worlds population increases, there will more deaths than before". Imagine the panic in the streets! If you are an American you are safe, because we have Obamacare. Meanwhile the mainstream media will not report the real issues because the bureaucrats in the three letter agencies, won't leak the really juicy bits if they do. Everybody needs to get it in their heads, that the media is moderated by the government, just like this forum is moderated by"the powers that be". The rest of the news is controlled by the corporations. Anybody else producing "real truth" news is labeled as just crazy. The common man is being scammed by big government and big corporations. The people doing this live in big houses and fly around in big jets. They don't give a flying phuck about us, and I am sure they knew about this VW scandal from the very beginning. It is probably retaliation for the NSA hacking Angela Merkels cell phone and being outed by Edward Snowden. It didn't really damage our security, it embarrassed our so called leaders. I too am mad as hell!

I'm not even upset at VW. Diesels should be rampant in the US. For as much as the US wants to be more like Europe, we sure missed the boat on having awesome diesel vehicles here for the last 20 years.

Have to agree with this.

Yet a lot of these same people who are horrified about VW doing this also hold that there are more people on the planet than it can support. Somehow we are supposed to reduce the population yet anything that does so is seen as evil by those who want the population reduced.

For the last few years, Howard Beale has becoming more relevant. That character is also one of my favorite, not to mention somewhat of a mentor. As I've used I'M MAD AS HELL as a rally cry. To be met with blank stares from the unknowing / uncaring, in society. The same folk also have no clue who Paddy Chayefsky is.

So what's the predicted death toll from the toxic waste the EPA let out into the Colorado River? How many Native Americans will die an early death because the EPA was trying to make political points against mining?

If you really want to go after emissions, go after the big jet aircraft! Obama going to Hawaii from Andrews AFB will spew over 65 tons of carbon dioxide. Don't forget the aircraft carrying all the limos and other assorted crap. For a freaking vacation. And that is only one way! This is probably why they moved DIA out in the boonies. Stapleton was choking the crap out of the metro area. The leaders all fly in big jets to meet & discuss global warming. Next thing will be all the passengers pissing in a special toilet connected to the jet engines!

That's not the problem. It's the cars. That's why we have to do those emissions tests every couple of years. That 122 cubic inch engine in your car is killing the ozone. It doesn't really have anything to do with the 61,000 cubic inch two strokes that I work on every day.

Make sure you don't have it serviced at a dealership though. They are required to fix every vehicle that passes through their doors, regardless of what you brought it in for.

...and we'll just pretend the earth never had to deal with the output from volcanic activity and coal seam fires for thousands of years before the automobile existed.

This as well. I find it interesting how no one stood up and questioned the stupid EPA law to begin with and if we really needed it. How many years ago would the country been so tickled to have a vehicles that get 50 miles per gallon and still look drive good?

CO2 is deadly? Guess they never took the same biology course I did where we wondered the miracle of photosynthesis and the life that is created from this.

You should read some examples of environmental groups suing the Fed Gov for not enforcing EPA regulations and guidelines. Then after loosing the EPA has to pay lawyer fees and fines to those groups. Then we all pay as the EPA now rights laws and has the ability to enforce said laws all outside of the constitution. Rinse and repeat.

Another example of a Gov agency loosing its directive and operating outside of the constitution.

If I was president I would have just said we are not enforcing that EPA law and VW is not going to pay any fines.

And in the time it took me to read this thread well more than 60 people died from driving like a douche in their car.
