The Rev. Al Sharpton is expected to deliver the eulogy on Saturday at the funeral of Florida musician Corey Jones, who was gunned down by a plainclothes police officer earlier this month.
Jones’ death, the latest in a string of fatal incidents in the United States involving police and black men, has sparked calls for greater transparency after the local sheriff's office released few details following the shooting.

Because the media has let the fire die down...[Mad][facepalm]

I am interested in the details of this shooting.

The deceased was a CCW holder, the cop apparently never showed a badge, driving an unmarked van. I am very interested as well.

I can't help but wonder if Al and company will all of a sudden become pro legal/responsible CCW...

Some information on the officer involved: http://www.wpbf.com/news/exclusive-detectives-focus-on-texts-officer-sent-after-shooting-of-corey-jones/36100870

It doesn't sound like there will be any video evidence and at 3:00 AM, not many witnesses if any. This will leave the sole surviver of the exchange as the primary witness.

Regardless of what actually happened that morning, this tragic incident is a good example of how difficult it is to obtain guilty verdicts or even press criminal charges in this type of case.

The police union is paying for the officer's defense and Benjamin Crump is representing the dead man's family.

Because there are those who wish to hang bait doesn't require us to fall into their trap. I will keep an open mind and trust in justice either here in this world, or in the life to come.

Be safe.

So did it turn out that the interaction was not captured on the recorded line of the road side service?

I'm surprised Al is going after this one because as I see it the black guy in this shooting was probably actually a victim of a bad cops actions ... usually they choose to champion the cause of thugs that actually deserved to get shot and not law abiding CCWers shot by bad cops.

So did it turn out that the interaction was not captured on the recorded line of the road side service?

From what I've read (may or may not be true) the deceased called the road side service twice. One of his friends came and tried to help him get his car started but left when he couldn't help him. He was sitting on the shoulder in the disabled car at an exit ramp off of I-95 when the plain clothes officer stopped in front of the disabled car. The officer was driving an unmarked police van and the officer was wearing jeans. It sounds like there wouldn't be a simple way for the deceased to know that the person who pulled up was a police officer. The deceased could easily have believed he was getting robbed by the side of the road.

Sadly, it sounds like the only side of this story that will be told will be the officer's. If forensic evidence at the scene does not disprove the officer's version of the events, then bringing criminal charges would be extremely difficult. If the forensic evidence supports the officer's version of the events, then IMO, criminal charges would be wrong and a poor use of the judicial system.

I would assume that there will be a settlement offer made to the family of the deceased.

Could the officer have handled the situation better? I think that depends on how he handled the situation. No one here knows that answer and sadly, no one but the officer may ever truly know what actually happened that morning. I do know that the officer will have to live with the knowledge that he killed a man. A man that probably (again I don't know because I wasn't there) didn't have to die.

Is law enforcement now being considered a distinct race?

From that article that you (Cstone) posted, it says that the officer was in an unmarked working on a stolen vehicle gig. That makes a whole lot more sense why he would stop to investigate a car parked on the shoulder while out of uniform.

South Florida is a real tough place. It is a concrete jungle from South Miami to Palm Beach. 90 miles of high density population. The largest transshipment area for narcotics. If you break down, stay in your car. Cop had been on the job since April. If I broke down on the I95 corridor, I would call 911 first and tell them about it.
