I had hoped he'd be the nominee in 2008. While I think the fix was in for the Dems that year, I think he would have done much to show how seriously ignorant and unprepared BHO was. Superb Senator, excellent actor, all-around American.

Met him briefly in the Palm Springs airport once... He was a gracious and dignified man. We're diminished by his loss.

Fred was the guy the republicans used to get John Roberts through the hearing process, which he did admirably. I suspect that Roberts judicial activism in SCOTUS was a surprise and disappointment to Thompson. Not a great deal was known about Roberts at the time and (as I understand it) there were not indications he would make the rulings he later did. Lack of record was a major red flag.
