Pentagon Proposes Controversial Policy Assigning Ranks To Military Spouses

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A new policy is currently being considered by the Department of Defense which would assign rank to spouses of military members.
The controversial measure which was announced yesterday is meant to address disputes and complaints. Problems would be handled between spouses instead of a dependents’ chain of command.
With a system of rank would also come legal doctrine — The Civilian Code of Spousal Justice — to mirror the military’s existing Uniform Code of Military Justice.
The policy discussion comes after a high-profile incident in which a Marine wife was not saluted as she entered her husband’s base (http://duffelblog.wpengine.com/2012/05/marine-officers-wife-emotionally-disturbed-after-denied-a-salute/), as well as a series of surveys conducted throughout the military to determine major issues plaguing the force. Many commanders described frustrating encounters with military spouses on “an almost daily basis.”
Some of the survey findings were startling, showing commanders finding it increasingly difficult to mediate issues between military spouses. With troop drawdowns and lack of manpower, polls show a force dealing with problems on the homefront even more than military combat.
One survey returned from a Marine platoon commander at Camp Pendleton expressed anger at what he called “dependopotamouses.”
“I can’t handle this anymore. I’m supposed to be a Sniper Platoon Commander, not some lovey dovey, let’s be friends, kumbaya, sit around the camp-fire playing acoustic guitar freak,” said 1st Lt. Nathan Morris. “Shit, no wonder my Scout Snipers are out of control (http://duffelblog.wpengine.com/2012/05/marine-scout-sniper-burning-cross-logo-raises-controversy/), their spouses drive them insane.”
A company commander with the Army’s 25th Infantry Division told a similar story.
“No shit, there I was, surrounded on all fronts. There had to be at least 25 of em’,'” recalled Capt. Eric Jones. “Hollering their war cries of demands for higher BAH and less field time for their husbands.”
After establishing a focus group of twenty field grade officers, the idea of assigning military spouses’ rank was brought up by Maj. Alex Steen.
“This is a wonderful idea,” Steen said. “Many spouses already seem to act like they wear their sponsors’ rank, so why not just give it to them? This will allow spouses to pull rank when necessary so as to put out of line spouses in their respective place.”
The DoD has proposed ranks be assigned to dependents of sponsors in pay-grades of E-1 through E-9. The spousal rank would also be equivalent to the sponsors’ rank to avoid instances of “pulling rank” on the military sponsor.
Spouse ranks would begin with S-1 (Spouse Recruit) and ascend to S-9 (Chief Master Spouse).
“If only this had been done sooner,” said Ellen Trump, wife of Sgt. Maj. John Trump. “One time I was sitting outside of the PX when this — this Lance Corporal’s wife, tattoo sleeves and all, walks by with her two kids. Doesn’t stop. Doesn’t give the proper greeting of the day. I’ve been married to the Marine Corps for over twenty years! I think she needs to learn who her betters are!”
The new Civilian Code of Spousal Justice will include Articles pertaining to Insubordination, Assaulting or willfully disobeying superior ranked spouses, and Malingering so as to grant authority to the prospective ranks.
The Pentagon has not yet confirmed or denied the possibility of assigning rank to the spouses of officers.

That is funny. I can just imagine how it would be in the kitchen. What about the kids? Would they have rank too?

I'll never forget being in line at the commissary in Virginia Beach when an officer's wife cut the line claiming her & her husband were attending a party at his CO's and she was in a hurry. Just so happened the CO's wife was standing behind me and told the lady if the CO's wife can stand in line, so could she. The look on that lady's face was classic. Bet her husband was happy when he found out.

Reminded me of working the gate on a mid shift at Brooks AFB long ago. I had an old 80 something lady drive up with an officer's sticker on the windshield. I made a bad assumption and failed to salute. She politely handed me her retiree ID card - not required to do so at the time, and I quickly noticed she herself was a retired Colonel. Oopse. She just smiled, returned my salute and went on her way.

It was the crappy little teenage dependent officer's kids that pissed me off when I would salute the window sticker and they would just laugh and drive through, or the occasional officer's wife that would slow way down waiting for and expecting a salute. It was a small enough base that we learned who was who pretty quickly.

I understand officer's wives take their husband's rank more seriously and personally than enlisted. My three wives while enlisted couldn't have cared less.

My wife and I were the same rank...but I had her in TIG/TIS. I thought it was pretty important. She, apparently, didn't.

The behavior of a few officer's wives really cast a pall on the whole group when I was stationed at Tempelhof.

I had a friend who was a female SSgt and her husband was a MSgt. One day she was in line at the commissary in civilian cloths and as usual the lines long and slow. My friend was almost next in line for the register when a Col wife pushed her cart in front of her. Friend said excuse me but you need to go to the back of the line. Col wife said I'm a Col wife and I have the right to cut in line. Friend said and not quietly, my husband is a MSgt and you need to your ass at the back of the line now. Many hand claps for the friend and the stink eye to the Col wife. She went to the back of the line.

Not exactly on topic but it is about a Capt.'s wife, she to was also Capt. and also my boss. Me and a couple of other airman were working in job control and it was very quiet which was unusual. A couple of days earlier I was at my desk and several of the female co-workers came in and started talking. I was the only guy and my desk was a across the room. They forgot I was there and started talking girl talk and the Capt said how she was frustrated with the lack of sex she had because her husband would rather golf and hang out with his friends. She was very hot by the way. Couple of days later in job control when it was very quiet I told about the female Capt and being young kids we started talking about what we would like to do with the her and what a limp ##$% her husband must be. Being usually quiet in JC what we did not realize was the Capt had her office next to JC and wall was paper thin. After talking about her for a while her phone rang and she answered it and it sounded like she was sitting with us. After the call she came into to JC pissed. I thought for sure I was going to be cleaning toilets until I retired. She just glared at me for a bit and left. They were getting ready to transfer out in a week or so anyway. It taught me a lesson about gossiping and how thin some walls can actually be.
