I've always liked the looks. Can I get some input on them

I like mine. Fun to shoot, dirt cheap mags manageable recoil. My biggest complaint (if your a reloader) is it dents the crap out of the brass.
If your in the market for one look for the new version coming out. It is supposed to have a paddle mag release which I wish mine had. That push button release is impossible to reach unless you have 12" long fingers,

I have a real HK91 (German) and a PTR91.. Anyone who tells you they are the same is on crack. That said, my HK91 is one of my favorite guns to shoot.

So what's the big difference? I see no quality issues with my PTR and it has functioned flawlessly?
Its strange. But there is an incredible 'feel' difference. The HK91 feels rock solid and like you could pry the face off a tractor with it (and when done shoot bullseys at 500m) - it shoots perfectly and just balances right. The PTR feels like a knock-off, it just doesn't have the same character. I know its weird and I wish I could point to a single or couple of things (other than the PTR is slightly more loose than the HK but nothing horrible). I have had people do blind tests and shoot them both back to back, done it 20-30 times, and people always pick the HK.
I know they came off the same machinery, but there is something about the HK that makes me want to shoot it. Its the same thing about the PTR that makes me say "Meh"..
That said the HK93/91 style guns are all fucking rock solid so you can't go wrong with getting even a 'knock-off'. But don't be fooled into thinking they are the same thing.

I'll agree that a german HK91 is bettar [sic], but a PTR91 is still pretty damn good. Much bettar than other HK knockoffs.
That is a big price jump from the PTR's to the H&K. Are the differences like a $400 AK and an Arsenal AK? Both rifles function the same but you can just tell the difference when you hold it. Any issues on the functionality of your PTR? I'm debating on if my next gun should be a semi auto .308 or not and PTR's have always looked pretty cool. I've just never shot one or even held one. Basically, would you buy it again after owning one?

Of course it is. The Name sells the product. Anytime a H&K 91 or 93 goes up for sale, they don't last long. Unless the seller thinks a beat up unit with no box or accessories will get them $4K .
IF i were in the market i wouldn't hesitate spending $$ on the H&K. If i were you , find someone who would let you shoot theirs before committing to either.

If you can score one for a decent price and have some 308 to blast away, go for it.
I'd have one if I wasn't left handed.

I have one, a GI model. It likes all kinds of ammo and runs great. It throws the brass into the next county which is a PITA to pick up. I can just barely touch my mag release, I talked to BPTactical about changing it out for a paddle but that is an expensive proposition.

I am really temped to get one of the new ones with the paddle release. I looked into adding it to mine, but like you said not a real easy thing to do.
I had an HK91 in the early 90's. It was an awesome rifle. Only sold it because a guy offered me an insane amount for it shortly after the AWB went into effect.
Mags were (are?) cheap and plentiful and it was a joy to shoot and nothing but reliable.
I will mention that you shouldn't plan on reloading for it. If you can find the brass (mine tossed it forward and to the right about 20 feet) it will likely be in pretty bad shape from hitting the ejection port opening.

There are port buffers that take care of the Dented-Brass-In-the-Next-County problem. Here is a link to one of them.

Look for early production JLD PTR rifles. Aside from the barrel and receiver they were nearly all HK/FMP components.
I have had two of them and regretted parting ways with them.
I've been contemplating trading my unfired M1A for another one if I can find one.

Picked up one not that long ago. GI model with the welded picatinny on top (which i would highly recommend for optics vs the claw mount).
Don't buy one thinking that you will be hitting anything accurately out to 1000 yards. The rifle, in my opinion, is made to be a solid platform for a battle rifle. Everything is huge on the gun from the trigger guard that would fit an elephants foot to the safety about the size of a 2x4. That being said, mine has been reliable as anything I own. Eats up just the cheapest 308 I've thrown at it and tends to like things in the 150gr. range. Mags at the time were extremely cheap, but keep in mind they are 20rd. Not sure on the prevalence of anything less than 15. One last thing to consider, this gun is a tank. Not something that is going to be packed around for a 20 mile hike. That being said, if you run out of ammo I would not want to be on the receiving end of it being used as a club.
Not quite the standard PTR, but it gives you an idea that the gun is capable of 500 yards.

For an antiquated and outmoded cartridge concept, it's a great rifle, still.
I love my PTR91
I had a JLD PTR91 with the H&K claw scope mount for the Hensoldt 6x scope. Sold the rifle and mount for $900. It also had the heavy barrel. Rifle shot fine, I still preferred the M1A/M14 rifle to it.
These are fine guns. As someone note Some years have better reputation than others. As for reloading, you can do it. I shoot without a the ejection buffer and 90 % of the brass is re-loadable. I think the number would be higher with the buffer. And they will only be plinking grade. The stripes are still present after resizing but they function fine. And they don't last too many times.
