On 10 November 1775, the Continental Congress commissioned Samuel Nicholas to raise two Battalions of Marines. That very day, Nicholas set up shop in Tun Tavern. He appointed Robert Mullan, then the proprietor of the tavern, to the job of chief Marine Recruiter -- serving, of course, from his place of business at Tun Tavern. Prospective recruits flocked to the tavern, lured by (1) cold beer and (2) the opportunity to serve in the new Corps of Marines.

One that day in 1775, Mullan got his first recruit, a young lad of 18. Once the recruit made his mark, Mullan gave out a round on the house to celebrate the start of the USMC. “Huzzah, huzzah”, the patrons called out, although whether they were more impressed by the recruit or the free beer has never been determined. The Colonel, not to be outdone, called for another round, and the huzzahs filled the air again. The young man, two beers to the good, was handed a shilling and sent to sit on a bench along the back wall, away from the door to prevent successful changes of heart.

Mullan called out “Who will be next in this Corps of Marines?” Another strapping lad pushed forward and signed his name. This time, Mullan’s celebratory round wasn’t followed by one from the Colonel, as two fine beers in quick succession had led that worth to take a nap. The second recruit, shilling in pocket, was sent to sit with his predecessor on the bench.
Excitedly, he nudged his companion and said, “Isn’t this great? We join the Marines and they give us a shilling and a beer”. The first recruit leaned back, and held up two fingers. “In the Old Corps, we got TWO beers”.
