View Full Version : RUMOR: Bass Pro buyout of Cabelas was finalized this week

This rumor has been published in a number of major news sources all month, but this is the first time I've heard that it might have been completed this week.
As a former Nebraska boy, this is blowing up all over my facebook feed.

I like Bass Pro, but I'd have to say I'll be disappointed if this turns out to be true, for many reasons.

Lord I hope not. I try to shop at Sportsman's anyway. So I guess I really don't care. They are always cheaper than Bass Pro and Cabelas.

Nice, More inventory with the same high prices. Then again, when a business receives an offer too good to pass up,why not?

Meh. There is this thing called Amazon Prime. I click a button and two days later stuff arrives at my door for the same or less price and no sales tax.

I don't shop at either, but these mergers (or buy outs) always end up with store closures and other layoffs. I guess its a good thing that Obama has fixed the economy and we have real low unemployment :p

Cabelas has been looking for a suitor for a while. They expanded too fast.

Read an article about Bass Pro buying them out at least a week ago.

I quit shopping at Cabela's when they opened stores in CO. No advantage since I had to pay sales tax after that. There's a Sportsman's here in Lewiston...close enough.

+1 for Scheels.

It's going to cost me extra money I venture to the store they're building in Loveland...way too close to Kazoo's place. lol

Sucks, I have got at least six guns from Cabela's used racks for some pretty good prices. Lots of ammo and reloading stuff. Can't find anything at Ass Pro. Every piece of Ass Pro's Red Head clothing I've purchased didn't fit after the first time I washed it. Cabela's always had name brands and was competitively priced when on sale. I don't mind Gender Mtn for clothes but firearm anything is over priced. I quit shopping at Sportsman's when they closed the Aurora store.

While both are a little high priced I find Cabelas to be much more competitive then Bass Pro. Hell Bass has Magpul accessories priced Over MSRP? And forget about buying a gun there. We only have a Bass in the Springs and I sure wish we had a Cabelas. Much better selection as well.

this is weird to me, cabelas seems like a way better store and company overall. bass pro seems like that store that has tons of stuff but never anything i want/need. caters strictly to hunters it seems as opposed to shooters. cabelas is a nice balance. plus i use the cabelas card, bummer that probably won't be around.

Bass Pro only when they are having a stellar sale (not often), or if I have gift cards to burn. Denver store had a Stevens 555 O/U .410 in the used rack that was very nice, but they had it priced at least $30 over typical NIB retail. I set down a couple items I was going to buy and walked out. Didn't figure it was even worth haggling over the .410, and decided I didn't need the other stuff. Walked straight to the exit.

I still have a bunch of Herter's waterfowl gear, from before Cabelas bought them out. I probably even have Gander Mtn stuff from back in the day from mail order or very early internet. Mack's Prairie Wings, as well.

Aaah, the good old days.

From one of the comments in the article posted above...

This is either terrible reporting or terrible information. Number one: Cabela's recieved a takeover bid from Bass Pro (private equity). This is an OFFER that Cabela's can either accept or reject. Number two: Considering the fact that it was an offer to a largely struggling Cabela's, this would most likely be a good thing for their branding. Depending on the disclosures, if they decide to accept said offer. Meaning this; does Cabela's maintain their own brand as there is considerable equity in it; or does it take the image of Bass Pro? Again, terms not disclosed because this is a "bid". There are so many unknown factors, that any talk of closure's or personnel decisions would never be disclosed to store managers or even branch managers. So, before the anti-government talk continues lets stop fear mongering. Cabela's is struggling. Personally, I would be more worried if they didn't accept any kind of takeover bid from any of their competitors.

I just wish Cabela's would staff their store properly. Getting an employee there to help you is impossible. I don't know how they ever sell shoes there. I was ready to buy a pistol there a few months ago but waited 20 minutes and couldn't get a person to sell me the thing.

Thank God for Big R in Elizabeth, saved about $100 on the pistol and no wait. I think that is my new favorite store.

I'll never shop at Jax again, even tho there is one down the street from me. The owner, Quinlan, dropped all ARs and accessories when the gun laws were passed a few years ago. On his facebook page, he indicated that "nobody needs an assault weapon". That said enough for me.

I'll miss their Gun Library. Can't afford anything in there but I enjoy going through it and their used collection. Bass Pro down in COS doesn't carry used firearms, although I've seen other Bass Pro's that do (Tulsa).

Prices are typically high but every once in a while I get a good deal at the Lone Tree store. Good people there.

They'll sell Surefire lights, 5.11 pants, and ammo to Joe, but won't support him using the AR the ammo was bought for.

What a bunch of clowns.

What a bunch of clowns.

Basically.

It's like I've said in recent posts, I used to spend more money to support local businesses that I thought supported me. You know, a professional relationship that revolved around them appreciating me as a customer and my rights and me paying them copious sums of money that I could give to faceless conglomerates at lower rates. They actually did me a favor by screwing me over countless times and forcing me to buy items for MUCH less online and the savings allows me to buy even more fun things I want and I never need to put on clothes to do so. Thank you LGS!

Cabela's ammo and gun selection (both new and used) is MILES ahead of Bass Pro. I have found some good deals in the Gun Library, like an outstanding 1868 .50-70 Trapdoor, .45 Colt Mountain Gun, 639 S&W, and 5 1/2" .45-70 BFR.

Earlier this week, the south store was overflowing with ammo, including more "specialty" calibers, like .32/20, .38/40 and PPU Euro like 7.5 Swiss and 6.5 Carcano.

Bass Pro has nothing like that...

Honestly I dont shop at either. I dont think I have ever bought from BassPro and only been there once. Cabelas I have been to a half dozen times in the last 20 years. In the 80s I would go to the bargain basement in Nebraska. Most of my shopping is online or Sportsmans.

All of these places are funny. You walk in and at least 30-40 percent of the store is dedicated to clothing with their logo on it. I cant believe people pay good money so a large corporation can advertise for free, wait not free you pay them to advertise for them. crazy.

Same here HBAR, I remember going to Sydney with my Grandparents to shop a Cabela's downtown there. Being a Nebraska implant I have a fondness for Cabeala's and I hate to see Ass Pro take over. I do spend money at Cabela's (I have like $200 in points), again I have a fondness for them. ProMotive and Amazon however get most of my business anymore.

I guess I can hope for a going out of business or store closing sale.

When shot was 40 to at the MOST 45 bucks a bag, Bass Pro had it.......for 50 BUCKS A BAG!@!! And it was still there, week after week after week, and it was still 50 bucks a bag.
Don't even get me started on their firearm prices. Might as well call it "Bass/Gander Mt./Pro". New price "plus" for used guns.
Honestly, I've been in Bass Pro half a dozen times, and NEVER bought anything.
If this is true, it's time to cancel my Cabela's credit card. When I used to fly into Sidney, Nebraska, Cabela's sent the van out to pick me up from the airport. You just called in to the FBO and requested the Cabela's van. I DON'T see AssPro doing that. Maybe with a 50 dollar taxi bill...

When there was one Cabela's, it was great. When there was a couple, again, it was great. When there are TWO in the Denver area, there's a problem. (You know, "hey, why don't we open a store in Denver? HEY why don't we open TWO???) Once again, thousands suffer because of BAD management.
