HID conversion of 2014 ram 3500

Need some advice and help with selecting and wiring HID conversion kit for 2014 ram 3500 with projector headlamps. Also need to consider wiring in some auxiliary led lights. The electronic systems in this truck are pretty complex and I definitely don't want to start a string of future problems

I would appreciate any help from folks with experience with wiring these systems. Thanks

Do HID's come as factory option ? If not my suggestion is leave it the hell alone or find a well known kit/company that makes these or you could have many issue later on. If it's a factory option find a wrecked truck and buy the lights off it.

How are your electrical skills?

To do this properly on a CanBus truck will require relays, load resistors, and a custom wiring harness. There are lots of kits that claim it works well, but most of them that I have seen result in flickering, and other issues.

Swapping in HID bulbs with ballasts are a breeze. If you are actually wanting to retro fit a projector/HID that is another story. Retro fitting a projector requires disassembly of your headlight (splitting the casing) and fitting of the projector.

Since that was a factory option on that truck, I'm sure you can search the Dodge Ram forums and find someone who has done a swap rather than a retro fit. That would be the best option as it would probably be a direct swap.

Truck is already equipped with a projector for low beams. Sounds like a blast and bulb is all that I need. I may be in touch for a bit of help after speaking with the folks at retro.

Search the Cummins forum. I've looked into HIDs for my 2014 Ram and it seems pretty complex. Retro has great stuff but very pricey. Also, folks on the Cummins Forum have been doing LED headlight conversion with the same if not better brightness as HIDs.

What bulb number does your truck use? Most HID conversions are almost all plug in play.

Sorry I was a little wrong with the term complex....the HIDs are plug and play but from what I remember (it's been a while since I researched) people were having problems fitting the balast in the housing and also having heat issues.

The LED conversion is the one that's complex as the canbus system needs to be satisfied with a certain voltage. There's a complete writeup on what relays and whatever else is needed to make them work on the Cummins forum.

The ballasts do not go into the housing, only the bulbs do. I have always mounted my ballasts (four them, two for low beams and two for highs) behind the front grille. Plenty of air flow through there and will never over heat.

HID 'conversion' kits are nothing more than a ballast and bulb. Disconnect your old bulb, plug the truck side wires into your ballast, install new HID bulb into headlights and PRESTO! Then mount your ballast where you want and make it look pretty. It does get a little more 'complicated' if the there is only one bulb for high and low vs two separate bulbs.
