I have nothing serious to say here. I just thought I should give you all the opportunity to join me in laughing:

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro police are offering community members a chance to turn in their weapons and take a pledge of nonviolence (http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=36&recordid=7481&returnURL=%2Findex.aspx%3Fpage%3D1045) on Saturday.
Police will be at Destiny Christian Center at 2401 Randleman Road in Greensboro from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. urging folks to commit to safety within their communities. Officers say they have a goal for at least 1,000 people from our area to take the nonviolence pledge. Gun owners will also have the opportunity to turn in unwanted firearms at this event.
Police employees will be accepting handguns, rifles, shotguns, and ammunition.
GPD says this event was created, in part, because of an increase in gun violence. This year compared to last, gun violence has increased by 68 percent.
Greensboro Police also say the event supports the philosophy of Neighborhood Oriented Policing in which law enforcement and community members work together to solve problems.
The first 1,000 people to pledge will receive a small gift. Signed pledges will be displayed at Police Headquarters. After the event, the Pledge of Non-violence will be available for download at www.gsopd.org (http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=1045).

I hope the "small gift" is a sign for the front yard saying "rob me, I'm a sheep"

I was in NC last weekend and looking for a place to spend some winter time with the wife. I guess I just wasted time and money. Another big draw back is no open areas to shoot LR.

Personally, I'm not a criminal scumbag, but don't let me stop you.

And here the wife and I were just talking about the Carolinas for possible relocation. Guess we'll have to limit it to South.

Just FYI...I'm accepting unwanted guns from any of you guys. You don't even have to sign a pledge. Bring me your unwanted guns/ammo (hell...I'll even come pick them up) and I'll post your name up here for all to see and I'll give you a small gift, too. PMs are fine.

You know, just because the police are offering something, doesn't really reflect how the population feels.

I'm sure one of the contributing factors is the influx of yankees. Lots of New Yorkers (I'm sure other northerners too) are moving there, hell one of my best friends moved to NC less than a year ago.

Where? Stats?

The only people turning in unwanted guns don't have a clue how to even use a gun. These people wouldn't know how to commit a crime if you paid them. I can't imagine this could in any way reduce there trumped up crime stats. I have heard that if you want to move to the Carolina's, South is the place.

Every single time I see something were these programs actually get participants I wonder what world these people live in...seriously. We're so collectively screwed.

Is there any evidence that there were actually any participants in the gun turn-in?

I would happily sign a non-violence pledge right now.

Dammit HB, you didn't post this soon enough for me to get a plane ticket and wad of cash so I could set up a table down the road from the police offering cash instead of "gifts" for their unwanted firearms. If anyone hears of Boulder or Manitou Springs doing something this stupid, I think we should get an FFL for the day and go set up our own table to collect the bargains offer the citizens more fungible proceeds for their unwanted garbage.
