Hello All,

Well after over a 6 month academy I am now a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

http://jeffco.us/sheriff/careers/reserve-program/

I had to go thru all the same testing to get hired, written tests, physical agility test, oral board, polygraph, psychological evaluation(s), drug screen and medical examination.

I attended a combined Reserve Training Academy with Douglas County.
The academy was held at the Highland Ranch Public Safety Training Institute.
We went every Tuesday & Thursday night from 1800 to 2200, and every other Saturday from 0800 to 1700 from May till last night!
We are Colorado P.O.S.T certified and received the same full skills training as a full time Deputy (Firearms, Driving and A.C.T - arrest, control and transport).

My very pregnant wife is pining on my badge.

Congrats, that's great! Can you talk more about your motivation for joining, paid vs volunteer, and what your duties will be going forward?

Congrats, that's great! Can you talk more about your motivation for joining, paid vs volunteer, and what your duties will be going forward?

Well I guess the biggest reason to join is to make a difference, I truly want to help people and give back, I want my kids to look at me as a positive role model.

As to why I volunteer, at this time my family and I cannot take the pay cut required to work full time as a L.E.O. It also would be hard for me to have to work nights, holiday and weekends right now. We have 3 kids with # 4 due in December. I may go full time in the future, time will tell.

I really am unsure what my duties will be going forward, I just graduated last night and have to wait for my Colorado P.O.S.T PID number before I can work in uniform here are some things they told us:
Assignments include:
• Patrol and law enforcement duties
• Neighborhood speed trailer deployment
• Prisoner/fugitive extraditions
• Crime-prevention presentations
• Bicycle and mounted-patrol duties
• Search and rescue
• Crime scene security
• Detention and civil operations

Congrats! That's a noble thing to do and you're doing it at an increasingly difficult time for law enforcement in America. My hat is off to you, sir.

Since it has been a little over a year I felt like I should update this post,
I LOVE being a reserve!
Here is a list of most of the stuff I have done in the past year:
Reviewing Sheriff's Office Policy and Procedure.
Sex offender address verification, (if a person is a registered sex offend, the Sheriff's office must verify their contact info and address once every 3 months, 6 months or yearly.
When Park County Deputy Nate Carrigan was killed I went to Park County and worked, we secured the Crime Scene for CBI and helped them with calls for service.
I have also worked court security (small claims night court); it is really fun I got to hear some crazy small claim cases.
The Colorado State Patrol has "Take it to the Track" ever Wednesday night in the summer time at Bandimere Speedway, I have gotten to take a patrol vehicle to the track to run against people.
We also must attend a monthly training and meeting, and then in addition to that we must attend quarter and yearly training for CO P.O.S.T (CPR, Driving, Firearms, First aid, Anti-Bias Policing, Ethics, Legal Updates, De-Escalation, Taser, A.C.T, ect).
I have worked the jail transport vehicle.
We also do lots of committee events, like parades, runs, rallies, etc.
Lastly I do a lot of ride a longs, I am able to drive the patrol unit with a partner. We do traffic stops, calls for service, warrants and I have even had a few arrests.
I love it! I average right around 25 hours a month of service.

This is very cool, good for you! One of my closest friends started his l.e. career as a Reserve with Denver a loong time ago haha. He retired from another large agency in the area, then went to work for a Sheriff's dept. doing their ccw permitting. After that he did extraditions until completely retiring last year. Good luck to you, Jeffco residents are fortunate to have you.

Congrats, glad you are liking it.

I think you're part of a great tradition: I've always thought that Reserve Law Enforcement was a good idea because it keeps the LE agencies 'connected' to the community in which they serve.

In fact, I would argue that in many ways, reserve LEOs are much closer to the "militia" of the past than the modern day Reserve military, which is a paid professional force (albeit part time) and in reality, part of the standing army that often serves overseas (as I know only too well from my own experiences in the USAR and ARNG ;) )

By contrast, Reserve LEOs are unpaid volunteers who serve the community in which they live. Back before professional police forces were established in the early 19th century, citizen militias were the only kind of "law enforcement officer" that existed.

When I was 21 years old I did my 1st ride a long with the Northglenn Police Department, I loved it and wanted to pursue a job in law enforcement. Life got in the way and I never did, 3 years ago today that changed when I graduated the police academy and became a Colorado POST certified reserve police officer and I love it!!
