I'm looking for a light deer hunting rifle for the Girl Friend for Christmas, she likes the more traditional Wood finish. What does everyone recommend?

I have a Remington 788 traditional wood in .243 that is very light considering. Just remember the balance of weight saving vs recoil management. A good break will help with that. An old Remington or Savage tend to be lighter weight.

No wood stocks, but any of the news 250$ bargain rifles would do the job. Little nicer there's weatherby vanguard series 2.

A good recommendation would require knowing what kind of budget you have.

A Ruger American. Fairly inexpensive and available in just about any caliber.

30-30 Winchester. Most successful deer rifle in US history.

I held an extremely light muzzleloader this year. That can't make the recoil much fun, but you don't even notice it when you're hunting.

That always helps, usually included with what one's looking for caliber wise.

I've always been a Remington fan, but I've bought a few Tikka T3 rifles lately and they are excellent. The are very light and shoot lights out. A buddy of mine has one in 7mm that will outshoot any other factory rifle in its class, and the .243 I have has made three separate trips with three different friends to Texas for hogs and hasn't let down anyone yet.

I'd say any of the low priced options from Savage or Remington would be a good choice. If you want a caliber recommendation, I think the 7mm-08 would be a good choice.

My Tikka T3 is a good rifle also. Its in .300 WSM but really isn't unpleasant to shoot. One in .243 Winchester would be a great beginners rifle.
