Howdy, new member currently in Texas, but moving to the Denver area soon. I was researching gun laws and found this site referred to on the city-data forum. I've been trying to find out what is legal to own in and around the Denver area. I'm looking for a place to live and understand there's an assault weapons ban in Denver proper, so I figure I should take that into consideration. Anyway, I look forward to learning a lot from everyone here.

Welcome.

I moved here from Beaumont about 16 years ago.

Youre going to to love the weather here and the Denver area is way less crazy than Houston. If you've enjoyed the Houston area gun shows you're going to find the Denver ones rather disappointing.

Denver itself has stricter gun rules than the rest of the state. It's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't live there. It's only a 14 mile drive from my house in the suburbs to downtown if I wanted to go there. I'm sure you know about the laws Colorado passed a couple of years ago. Magazines over 15 round capacity can't be sold or transferred and a proper background check through an FFL is required when buying r selling a firearm.

Anyhow, this forum is full of firearms enthusiast and an all around bunch of good people.

Holler if you need anything when you get here.

I'm certainly looking forward to the weather change vs Houston. And I've been wondering about the gun shows. I figure I'll have to get used to not have one every other weekend. As far as where to live, I assume I'll end up in one of the suburbs and not in the city of Denver. My job starts 12/07 and I can't wait to get up there and get settled. Eventually I'll be looking for decent gun shops, a gunsmith, and of course places to shoot!

Plenty of info on that stuff here on the forums.

Oh, and one thing I wasn't prepared for when I moved here was the cost of vehicle registration. Cost me $350 to put plates on the same truck I had plates on in Texas for $45. If you have expensive taste in vehicles, it could easily cost you $700 or $800 for license plates on a new vehicle.

Denver has one show about every two months. It's about half the size of one of the ones at George R. Brown. Maybe about the size of the ones they had in Spring, TX. I miss the ones at the Astrohall. It would take all day to get through one of those.

Welcome!

What general area of town will the new job be located? Folks here might offer up some good/bad knowledge of the area(s).

Important to note that this law does not prohibit you from bringing any magazines with you when you move. The law is specific that any magazine that you owned on or before July 2013 is legal, and the burden of proof is on the state to prove that you didn't own the magazine before that. So bring all your mags.

And ditto what gnihcraes said, let us know the city you are working in, and we can give you some detailed scouting info. It's hard to get a good read on the area during the typical job interview trip.

[ROFL1] But who doesn't like cake?

I start work on 12/07 at DIA. I'll be in corp housing for a couple of months, so I have some time to look around and find a place to live. I'm not looking forward to vehicle registration though.

There are at least one or two members here who work at DIA. I have a brother in law who works there as well (for United).

Unless you like being stuck in traffic twice a day, I would probably rule out living anywhere west of I-25. Places like Lakewood, Arvada, Littleton, etc. DIA is about a 30 minute drive from my house and I don't have to get on any of the highways. If I were working at DIA and didn't want a jacked up commute I would probably be checking out places north of I-70 and east of I-25. Bad thing is, some of those areas wouldn't be places I would choose to live. Places like Commerce City, Brighton, Green Valley Ranch, etc. Heck, if you wanted to live in a more rural area that was still a short drive to Denver or DIA you might even look out east of the city. I know quite a few people who live in Bennett, Strausberg, Byers, etc.

Thanks for the info. I work for United and my fiancee will be working at one of the hospitals, possibly children's. I'm hoping to live somewhere which allows me to take advantage of the new train going into DIA.

Welcome!

If you're going to be taking advantage of the light rail out to the airport, that pretty much removes the traffic restrictions and opens many new possibilities for residences. Are you planing on buying or renting?

Thanks for the welcome. I was planning on renting at first until I get the lay of the land and don't pick a bad place to live. On the other hand, we have six motorcycles, a camper, and two vehicles to find parking for, so in that respect I'm leaning towards buying. Plus I don't want to have to move my stuff again after renting for a year or two.

Haha! Man I used to eat there a lot when I was visiting and first moved to Texas. Now I'm sick of the place and was hoping for In N Out to move into the Houston area.

Welcome to the party!

Anywhere along 470 (east side) provides a relatively quick drive to DIA and opens up some decent areas to live. Aurora and Parker both offer some decent places to live outside enough of Denver to get the hippy stink out of the air.

anywho! welcome to the forum!

The dirty little trick on the California Commies that love In-N-Out is that its owned by people cut from the same cloth as Chick-Fil-A ... conservative Christians. That alone makes me wish they'd come to CO.
