Black Friday breaks record with 185K gun background checks (http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/black-friday-breaks-record-with-185k-gun-background-checks/ar-AAfUnQz?li=BBnbfcL)

More Americans had their backgrounds checked purchasing guns on Black Friday than any day in the on record, according to data released by the FBI this week.

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System processed 185,345 requests on Nov. 27, one of the largest retail sales days in the country.

"This was an approximate 5% increase over the 175,754 received on Black Friday 2014," wrote Stephen Fischer, the FBI's chief of multimedia productions. "The previous high for receipts were the 177,170 received on 12/21/2012."

Previous spikes for background checks, conducted before a gun buyer can obtain a firearm, occurred after prominent mass shootings, like in December 2012 in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Other Black Friday shopping days in 2014, 2013 and 2012 occupied the FBI's "top 10" list (https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/reports/nics_firearm_checks_top_10_highest_days_weeks.pdf) of the most background checks processed in a 24-hour period.

Since 1998, FBI data shows that the bureau has processed requests for more than 220 million firearm purchases.

Licensed sellers deny sales to failed background checks based on a variety of factors including criminal backgrounds, domestic violence convictions or restraining orders.

Friday's purchases came the same day as the mass shooting incident in Colorado Springs that killed three people and injured nine others.

On Saturday, President Obama called for tighter controls of "weapons of war" in the wake of the Planned Parenthood shooting.

"This is not normal," Obama said. "We can't let it become normal. If we truly care about this — if we're going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience — then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. Period. Enough is enough."

It's a shame all those folks are buying guns to turn them over to the gov. :(

The only weapon of war(TM) I want is a .50BMG. If I had the scratch my name would be represented in those numbers.

You know that's actually kind of badass terminology. "Weapons of War." We should start using it and make the left regret they came up with it.

Not is CA. I am sure that they call an emergency session of the legislature and totally ban the possession of all guns in CA, make sure that this NEVER happens again.

AND you can bet the lines of people filling out 4473's is an impressive one. Especially with the 10 day waiting period.

Funny, I had a few teachers come up to me this afternoon asking about CCW, where and how to buy a handgun and maybe going out to the range.
I'm more than glad to assist them.

Well, as of 45 minutes ago, the local walmart had not banned the sale of ammo yet ;)

Texted my brother in CA when I purchased my Glock a few weeks back, first text when I walked in, 35 minutes later walked out with purchase and texted again to say it was mine.

I have to imagine this doesn't include all of the internet purchases that will have background checks done in the week after Thanksgiving.

Yeah with as much as people shop online, I'd say the number of guns purchased that day or even during the whole black/cyber week was 10x the number of BG checks done.

I went into Cabelas in Dallas on black friday. There were easily 100 people waiting in line for back ground checks around noon time.
I'm sorry but they would have to be giving guns away to have me stand in line for hours for the meager discounts I saw for black friday sale. 870's for $229... The last one I bought new was for $199 on sale and it wasn't black friday and it wasn't Cabelas.

Unfortunately I couldn't be a part of this record setting day, maybe next year I can help set a new record. I wonder what the actual number is if you factor in all of the online sales and private sales.
