View Full Version : Local Story Says One Can Easily Convert to Full Auto
Gun accessories make semi-automatic guns shoot like machine guns

Under federal law, it's illegal to alter your gun to make it fully automatic but Denver7 has learned devices online do nearly the same thing and they're perfectly legal.
Slide Fire is a company that makes after market accessories for an AR-15 and an AK-47. For $299, gun enthusiasts can purchase the device that according to the company's website, "lets shooters safely and accurately bump fire their rifles without compromising safety and accuracy."
The piece implies that the addition of the Slide Fire stock makes a gun full auto. Obviously this makes scary assault rifles more scary and assualty and we must ban them now!
It's been a long time since I've seen this level of blatant dishonesty in print. And they wonder why we won't have a conversation?

Not read the papers the last 7 years?
I don't know what was dishonest about the article, but it did specifically indicate that bump firing is "safe," so I don't know what they're worried about.

The piece implies that anyone with an AR/AK and $300 can legally go full auto--that is not true. The language confuses bump firing with full auto which the BATF has ruled numerous times is not full auto and does not convert the weapon.

They'er just trying to win hearts and minds.
I just read the article and I'm actually impressed. I didn't see any false or misleading information in the article. And it looks like they even quoted some people who actually work in the firearms business.
I'm sure the motive behind the article is sinister and intended to point out how easily these firearms can be made more "dangerous" but as far as the content of the article I found it pretty accurate.

So you believe that a Slide Fire stock is "nearly the same thing" as full auto?
Having played with both (M16A2, M249, and bump fire), I completely disagree. I think the article is trying to bridge semi-auto rifles and "machine guns" to nullify the "AR-15 is not an assault rifle" argument.
Like StagLefty said, the article has jack shit to do with the CA shooting. But it would have everything to do with building support for a ban on semi-autos.
Slidefire stock + 7news = common core math
Even the dumb as hell BATFE could figure out it complies with existing rules. So tired of the media spoon feeding bs to the sheep. Journalistic integrity HA!
Journalistic ignorance is appropriate.
So you believe that a Slide Fire stock is "nearly the same thing" as full auto?
Eh. I suppose it depends how you define "nearly."
I understand the mechanics behind both and realize that the slide fire stock thingy in no way laters the actual function of the rifle. You get one shot with each pull of the trigger just like you're supposed to.
But you'd have to be kidding yourself if you didn't understand the reason people buy them.

Fairly certain we see eye to eye somewhat on this point.

Full auto = 1 trigger pull for multiple rounds fired
Slidefire = multiple trigger pulls for multiple rounds fired
AR does not stand for "Assault Rifle"
Assault Rifle = switchable from semi auto to 3 round burst or Full auto aka class 3 weapon
AR15 Is not a "Assault Rifle" because it's only semi auto (see above for definition of "Assault Rifle")
FTM!
So you believe that a Slide Fire stock is "nearly the same thing" as full auto?
To the voting laymen reading the article? 100%.

AR does not stand for "Assault Rifle"
WHHAAAA? I thought It stood for Assault Rifle 15 (The 15 is for the number of people you can kill with each clip)
And the AK47 means Aktive Killer (and it can kill FORTY SEVEN people with each clip!!)
[Sarcasm2]
Btw Screw centennial gun store for adding more to the bs the media spoon feeds the sheep

Yes, agreed. It was the author who used the word "nearly." Getting more lead out of a muzzle, maybe. Reliably getting rounds on target in full auto, nope.
I think of bump fire (Slide Fire or not) as an expensive novelty. I think once the adrenalin gets going it would be impossible to control and bump fire.
I see the reporting as very similar to the "high" cap magazine reporting after the Aurora Shooting. The thing jammed! It actually saved lives. A bump firing terrorists/psycho would have the same problem.
But again, I think this is an attack on the semi-auto platform which is already scary but now $300 away from being a mass-murdering Weapon of War.
And what good is a Slide Fire stock with our mag limit anyway? [facepalm]

Change the function of the rifle? Nope.
Illegal? Nope.
Sounds/looks like full auto to most public? Yep.
Even people that own/shoot guns, but aren't as serious as most of us, don't get it. A buddy of mine bought a slidefire and we were goofing around with it at a private range that had a couple of hunters there for sight in, and they thought it was an illegal gun. Had to show and explain how it worked before they even started to relax.
Friends of mine have their SOT, so I have gotten to play with true select fire rifles and sub guns, and the slidefire doesn't actually compare. However, the assertion made earlier that you can't control the aiming of the slidefire vs true FA is wrong. With a gun setup to use the SF, and a little thought into control of it, 30 rds on an 11x17 target at 100 is no harder than with true FA.

Yep, it's propaganda.
It also preys on the fears of the uneducated masses. They don't understand how useless FA is without the right guns, and proper use, which a terrorist (domestic, islamic, whatever) won't be using it for.
